Roadtrip: Manitoulin Island - Hamilton

Mein Ziel für diesen Roadtrip

Die Bruce-Halbinsel (englisch Bruce Peninsula) liegt in Südwest-Ontario (Kanada) und ragt in den Huronsee hinein. Ihre maximale Breite liegt bei etwa 20 km.

Mit der Fähre in Tobermory im Norden der Halbinsel angekommen habe ich zwei kurze Wanderungen im Nationalpark an der Küste gemacht und bin dann ziemlich direkt die restlichen etwa 300 km bis nach Hamilton gefahren. Dort habe ich mal wieder couchsurfing gemacht. Dies ist nun das Ende meines 2 wöchigen Roadtrips. Nun werde ich mir Gedanken wie es weitergeht.

The Bruce Peninsula is a peninsula in Ontario, Canada, that lies between Georgian Bay and the main basin of Lake Huron. The Bruce Peninsula contains part of the geological formation known as the Niagara Escarpment.

Off the ferry and arriving at the Peninsula in Tobermory I did two short hikes in the National Park towards the coast and drove pretty much about 300 km straight just with a quick stop to Hamilton. I found a couchsurfing place. This is my destination for my 2 week roadtrip. Now I have to think what I will do next.

Roadtrip: Manitoulin Island

Eiii...ne Insel mit zwei Bergen...

Manitoulin ist eine Insel im Huronsee in der kanadischen Provinz Ontario. Sie ist mit 2766 km² die größte in einem See gelegene Insel der Erde. Die Insel ist im Norden über eine ehemalige Eisenbahnbrücke mit dem Festland verbunden. „Manitoulin“ bedeutet „Geister-Insel“ in der Sprache der Anishinabe. Für die Anishinabe war die Insel immer heiliges Gebiet, auf dem sie ihre Toten begruben und sich auf Visionen vorbereiteten. Manitoulin hat um die 12.000 Einwohner, davon sind etwa ein Drittel Erste Nationen (Ureinwohner). Es existieren 108 Seen, in denen sich in einigen Fällen wiederum kleine Inseln befinden. Lake Manitou ist mit 104 km² der weltweit größte See auf einer Insel in einem See. Treasure Island im Lake Mindemoya ist die größte Insel in einem See auf einer Insel im See. ALLES KLAR?

Ich kam mal wieder zur Abendessen-Zeit an. Die Besitzerin hatte am nächsten Tag Geburtstag und die Familie war zu Besuch. Es wurde ungarisch gekocht und ich wurde gleich mit eingeladen. Außer mir waren noch zwei Franzosen da, die aber mit der Familie bekannt waren. Das „Auberge Inn“ in Providence Bay im Süden der Insel ist ein nettes kleines Hostel mit nur 3 Zimmern. War mit $45 (€ 30) etwas teuer ist aber auch sehr abgelegen, es gibt Frühstück inklusive und man hat das Gefühl man lebt in einer Familie.

Am nächsten Tag habe ich mir dann die Insel angeschaut. Sie hat eine Länge von 160 km. Es gibt nette Wanderungen, Wasserfälle, süße Örtchen und Kunst der Ureinwohner. Ich bin einfach ein wenig rumgefahren und habe eine 1,5 stündige Wanderung gemacht. Die Insel hat mir sehr gefallen. Am nächsten Morgen gings weiter.

Im Süden verläßt man die Insel mit der Fähre; die Überfahrt dauert 2 Stunden. Mir kam da der Gedanke, wie oft ich schon mit Fähren gefahren bin, unzählbar und das in sehr vielen Ländern.

The Ghost Island

Manitoulin Island is a Canadian lake island in Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario. It is the largest fresh water lake island in the world. Manitoulin Island contains a number of in-island lakes of its own. The island has an area of 2,766 km² (1,068 sq mi) and a population of about 12,000. A third of it are First Nations. In the language of the Anishinabe Manitoulin means “Ghost-Island”. They used to bury their dead people there.

Manitoulin Island itself has 108 freshwater lakes, some of which have their own islands; in turn several of these "islands within islands" have their own ponds. Lake Manitou (about 104 km² - 40.5 sq. mi.) is the largest lake in a freshwater island in the world, and Treasure Island in Lake Mindemoya is the largest island in a lake on an island in a lake in the world. Auberge Inn

I arrived right at supper time. The owner of the hostel had a birthday the next day so she had visit from her family. They cooked dinner and they invited me to it. There were also two French people but they already knew the family. The “Auberge Inn” at Providence Bay on the south coast is a small hostel with only 3 rooms. A bit expensive $45 (€ 30) but it is located in a remote area and breakfast is inclusive and you have the feeling you live with a family.

On the next day I explored the island. It has a length of about 160 km. There are nice hikes, waterfalls, cute villages and aboriginal art. I did a loop by car and hiked 1.5 hours (Cup & Saucer Trail). I really enjoyed the island. I left the next morning.

You leave the island by ferry in the south. It takes 2 hours. I just thought about how many ferries I took, uncountable and also in many different countries.

Roadtrip: Sault Ste. Marie – Manitoulin Island

Hagel und Sturm

Sault Ste. Marie ist eine Stadt mit 75.000 Einwohnern in der Region Nord-Ontario in Kanada. Auf der Südseite des Flusses liegt die gleichnamige Stadt Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan). Die Übersetzung des Names ist in etwa „die Stromschnellen der heiligen Marie“.

Da ich so früh los bin, kam ich vor dem Abendessen an. Es gab auf dem Weg nicht wirklich was zum Anhalten. Die Familie besteht aus 3 Kindern (2 Jungs 7 Jahre und 1 Mädchen 9 Jahre) und der Mutter; der Vater arbeitet unter der Woche in Detroit, USA. Als ich ankam, half ich erstmal beim Kochen, das hat ne Weile gedauert, da alle mitgemacht haben. Es gab Pad Thai, was die Kinder gerne gegessen haben. Wir haben uns alle nett unterhalten. Die Kinder sind super erzogen, sehr hilfsbereit und schlau.

Eigentlich hatte ich vor über Sudbury weiterzufahren, aber der Hostelbesitzer in Thunder Bay hat den Tipp gegeben, ich sollte doch über die Insel fahren. Klang gut, also hab ich das gemacht.

Am nächsten Morgen nach dem Frühstück haben wir noch ein paar Fotos angeschaut und am frühen Nachmittag ging es weiter. Als ich kurz im Supermarkt noch in der Stadt angehalten habe, fing es plötzlich an wie aus Eimern zu schütten. Nach 20 Minuten konnte ich dem Sturm entrinnen, allerdings gab es eine kurze Pinkelpause und dann noch ein Käffchen und da hat mich der Sturm wieder eingeholt, ich war natürlich drinnen; diesmal war auch Hagel dabei. Hat wieder 20 Minuten gedauert bis ich durch war. Man konnte kaum etwas sehen. Die Landschaft an beiden Seiten jedenfalls gar nicht. Als ich auf der Insel angekommen war (über eine Brücke), war ich dem Sturm entronnen, der übers Festland weitergezogen ist. Auf der Insel habe ich in einem kleinem Hostel an der Südküste übernachtet.

Hail storm

Sault Ste. Marie ("Soo Saint Marie") is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is the third largest city with a population of 75,000 in Northern Ontario, after Sudbury and Thunder Bay. The name translates to "Saint Mary's Rapids" or "Saint Mary's Falls". Although the word sault is pronounced "so" in French, it is pronounced like "soo" (suː) in the English pronunciation of the city name. To the south, across the river, is the United States and the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

In Sault Ste. Marie I stay with a mother and their 3 children (boys 7 and 7, girl 9). The father works out of town. Because I left so early I arrived in Sault Ste. Marie before supper. When I arrived I started helping with preparing the food. We had Pad Thai, which all kids really liked. It took a while because everybody was helping. We chatted quite a bit. The kids are very well behaved, helpful and smart.

My first idea was driving through Sudbury but the hostel owner in Thunder Bay suggested crossing the island. It sounded like a great idea so I did it.

The next morning after breakfast we watched some pictures and I left in the early afternoon. When I stopped at the supermarket in town it started pouring. It took me 20 minutes to escape from the storm but after a quick toilet break and a coffee break the storm caught up (of course when I was inside) and suddenly I was in a middle of a hail storm. It took me another 20 minutes and some bad visions to escape. I could hardly see the scenery around me. When I arrived at the island (over a bridge) the storm passed me. I stayed in a small hostel on the islands south coast.
