Was passiert so in Davos?

Neben unserem Hotel Real, dem kleinsten Froschclub gibt es auch in etwa 4 Gehminuten das Derby, dieser Frosch-Club ist das größte Haus. Zweidrittel von uns wohnen auch dort, da da viel mehr Platz ist, was leider der Grund ist, das wir Kollegen nicht so viel zusammen hängen. Ab und an bin ich auch abends mal drüben in der Bar.

Ich habe ein Zimmer im Nachbarhaus und teile mir mit dem Koch und zwei Portugiesinnen das Bad. Das Zimmer ist sogar sehr groß. Die Aufbauwoche lief super; in der Woche war Weihnachten. Wir waren auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt und haben zusammen Raclette gegessen. Wir sind sogar gemeinsam in die Kirche gegangen; es war auch jeden Fall interessant. Als ich ankam war in der Stadt so gut wie kein Schnee, auf die Piste konnte man, aber man konnte noch nicht ganz runter fahren.

Parsenn

Schon nach nur 4 Wochen nach meiner Ankunft fand die WEF (Weltwirtschaftsforum) statt. Dann haben wir für 10 Tage keine üblichen FROSCH-Gäste, sondern holländische Caterer und Dolmetscher aus aller Welt. Ein paar Tage vorher und hinterher haben wir niemanden, da die FROSCH-Gäste ja nur samstags anreisen. Das war die langweiligste Woche überhaupt. Ich mußte mich jeden Tag schick anziehen und in den 10 Tagen hatte ich nur 8 Gäste und es gab auch Tage an denen keiner da war; trotzdem mußte die Bar von 14 Uhr bis Mitternacht besetzt sein. Es durfte auch keiner meiner Kollegen an der Bar sein. Ich war also alleine. Immerhin konnte ich ein paar Dinge in der Zeit schaffen. Während der WEF war in Davos Ausnahmezustand. Straßenabschnitte waren gesperrt, man durfte nicht überall durch, die Dächer waren voller Scharfschützen, Polizisten fuhren mit den Bussen durch die gesperrten Abschnitte und Kampfjets und Helikopters flogen überall rum. Die Schweizer Grenzen wurden für die paar Tage (21. bis 24. Januar) geschlossen. Das tollste an allem aber waren die leeren Pisten, denn es gab kaum Touristen, da die Unterkünfte von wichtigen Leuten besetzt waren. Die Woche vor der WEF hatten wir auch noch eine Woche frei, da es nicht genügend Buchungen gab und wir hatten dann eine Woche Zwangsurlaub. Während unseren freien Tagen haben wir einmal zusammen gegrillt und einmal ein 5-Gänge-Menü zusammen gezaubert und ich war auch derweil in Zürich für einen Tag.

Den Rest der Zeit bin ich auf die Piste – etwa 2-3 Tage die Woche, ab und an mit Kollegen, auch mal aus dem Nachbarhaus. Ich war auch am Anfang mit den Gästen beim Hüttenabend und hab die Fackelwanderung zurück gemacht. 

Jakobshorn - Fun Park

Das war der Dezember und Januar. Im Februar bin ich dann mit Gästen und Kollegen Schneeschuhwandern gewesen; das ist ein normaler Programmpunkt bei uns. Das erste Mal habe ich eine Tour mit Kollegen in Italien gemacht. War nur eine kurze Wanderung von 2 Stunden, aber trotzdem anstrengend und super. Ich bin dann auch endlich mal beim Ski-Guiding mitgefahren, was ich in der letzten Saison nicht geschafft hatte. Ich habe auch noch was neues ausprobiert nämlich Langlaufen. Eine Kollegin aus dem Derby hat mich und eine Kollegin mitgenommen, die öfters selbst unterwegs ist und es sich selbst beigebracht hat. Es ist gar nicht so einfach; das Problem war aber auch, das wir keinen professionellen Lehrer hatten. Es ist schon ein wenig schwierig das Gleichgewicht in der Loipe zu halten und sich mit den Stöckern zurecht zufinden, vor allen Dingen, brauche ich so was beim Snowboarden nicht und kenne mich da nicht so aus.

Eines der Highlights war mein Paragliding-Flug, es war traumhaft. Ich hatte damals in Neuseeland einen Drachenflug gemacht, aber Paragliden wollte ich auch irgendwann mal machen und nun habe ich die Chance ergriffen, wie auch fast alle von uns. Der Typ kommt einmal die Woche und stellt sein Programm unseren Gästen vor.

Ich habe dann auch die andere Variante des Langlaufens ausprobiert, das Skaten. Eine Kollegin konnte mir die ersten Schritte ganz gut beibringen. Es ist auch nicht so einfach, aber ich bin froh das mal probiert zu haben; nun habe ich größeren Respekt vor den Langläufern und weiß wie anstrengend und schwierig das ist.

Ich bin dann nochmal mit dem Ski-Guiding mitgefahren, diesmal mit der anderen „Guidin“. Langsam fange ich an mehr zu machen. Ich war im örtlichen Heimatmuseum, habe mir die Stadt mal richtig angeschaut und habe das Skigebiet weiter erkundigt. Alles in allen kann ich nur sagen: „LÄUFT“!

What is happening in Davos?

Close to the small sport club where I work the “Hotel Real” we have another one; it is the biggest and it is called “Derby”. Two third of our team live there because they have more space for the workers then we do. This is a big reason why all of us don´t hang around all the time. Every now and then I go over there as well to the bar.

I have a room in the neighboring building and share the bathroom with our cook and two Portuguese girls who work somewhere else. My room is pretty big.

The week before the guests arrived was quite alright. We went to the local Christmas Market and ate Raclette for Christmas. We also went to church on Christmas all together. It was really interesting. When I arrived there was hardly any snow in the valley. The valley runs were still closed but on top there was enough snow.

Relaxing

After four weeks the “World Economic Forum (WEF)” took place here in Davos from 21 till 24 January. For 10 days we didn´t had the usual guests. Interpreters from all over the world and Dutch caterers stayed here. The few days before and after we kinda had a rest as our guests always arrive on Saturdays. This was the most boring week ever. I had to dress up and stay all the time alone in the bar. My co-workers were not allowed and I had to keep it open from 2 pm till midnight. There were days that I didn´t even had one guest the whole day. I had about eight people the whole 10 days. At least there was time to organize some stuff. During the WEF Davos was like in state of emergency on the roofs there were snipers; police officers accompany the local busses; streets and areas were blocked off and you could see fighter jets and helicopters all the time. The Swiss borders were also closed and like outside of Europe you have to go through passport control. But the best thing was that the slopes were never so empty. There were just a few tourists during this time. All the accommodation was booked out from important people. The week before the WEF we had also the week off because there weren´t enough bookings. During our days off we had a barbeque and once we cooked a 5-course meal. I also went to Zürich for one day.

The rest of the time I went snowboarding about 2 to 3 times a week; sometimes alone sometimes with co-workers also from the Derby. I went out for dinner with guests to a hut and we walked back with torches.

Rinerhorn

This was in December and January. In February I went snowshoeing which is one of our usual activity with guests. I did it the first time with co-workers at my last job in Italy. It is fun. It was only a hike for two hours but still exhausting. Finally I went with the ski guiding group. I did make it last time. I also tried something new; I went cross-country skiing. A colleague from the Hotel Derby went with us. She just learned it by doing. That might be the problem that I didn´t had a proper teacher. It is really hard to keep the balance in the tracks and use the ski poles in the correct way. For me as a snowboarder is it even harder as I am not used to ski poles.

One of my highlights was paragliding. It was awesome. Years ago I did hang gliding in New Zealand but I also wanted to do paragliding once. Here I had the chance and I took it. It was really worth it. The guide I coming once a week to our hotel and present his program to our guests.

I did a lot of other things. I also tried cross country skiing this time the skating style. I got a proper training from another co-worker. It is really not that easy. I have huge respect now from that sport. I was happy to try it at least once. Again I accompanied the ski guiding this time with another guide in another ski area. I am starting to do more stuff than I did in the beginning. I visit the local museum; I explored the town and the different ski areas. I can say everything is great.

Trip to Zurich

Ausflug nach Zürich

Zürich ist mit rund 400'000 Einwohnern die grösste Stadt der Schweiz. Ihre Einwohner werden Zürcher genannt (bzw. Stadtzürcher zur Differenzierung mit den übrigen Einwohnern des Kantons). Seit Jahren wird Zürich neben Genf als eine der Städte mit der weltweit höchsten Lebensqualität und gleichzeitig den höchsten Lebenshaltungskosten gelistet. Seit 2012 gilt Zürich als teuerste Stadt der Welt. Dank seiner Lage am Zürichsee, seiner gut erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Altstadt und einem vielseitigen Kulturangebot und Nachtleben ist es zudem ein Zentrum des Tourismus.

 

Am Limmat Fluß - - - At the Limmat River

Wo ich schon in der Schweiz bin und nicht allzu weit weg von Zürich wollte ich unbedingt die Stadt besuchen. Ich habe mir ein paar Hostels rausgesucht, aber wollte erstmal sehen, ob ich am selbem Abend nicht noch zurückfahre. Die Zugfahrt dauert 2 Stunden und 15 Minuten mit einmal umsteigen. Zürich hat mir von vornerein gefallen. Die einzige andere größere Stadt in der Schweiz, die ich angeschaut habe, ist Genf. Zürich erinnerte mich aber eher an Innsbruck oder Salzburg in Österreich. Die Stadt hat eine nette Altstadt und ein tolles Museum und liegt direkt an einem Fluß und am Züricher See. Die schneebedeckten Berge sieht man am anderen Ende des Sees. Nach etwa 7 Stunden dachte ich mir, ´ich hab´ alles gesehen, was ich sehen wollte´; ich bin auch eine ganz Weile am See entlang spazieren gegangen, dann bin ich am Nachmittag wieder nach Davos zurück.

According to several surveys from 2006 to 2008, Zürich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe.

I am already in Switzerland so I really wanted to see Zürich; it is not that far away. I checked out some hostels but didn´t booked anything because I might go back the same day. The journey by train took 2 hours and 15 minutes. I only had to change the train once. I liked the city right away. The only other bigger city I have visited in Switzerland is Geneva but Zürich reminded me more of Innsbruck or Salzburg in Austria. The city has a beautiful old town and it has at least one great museum. It is located along a river and the Lake Zurich. The snowcapped mountains you see at the end of the lake. After about 7 hours I thought I have done and seen everything I wanted to; I also walked quite a bit along the lake. So I took the train in the late afternoon and went back to Davos.

My new job

Die Schweiz (französisch Suisse, italienisch Svizzera, rätoromanisch Svizra oder lateinisch Helvetia), amtlich „Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft“ ist ein föderalistischer, demokratischer Staat in Europa. Die Schweiz grenzt an Deutschland im Norden, an Österreich und Liechtenstein im Osten, an Italien im Süden und an Frankreich im Westen. Die Landschaft Davos umfasst beinah das gesamte Landwassertal im Schweizer Kanton Graubünden. Davos besteht aus den sechs Fraktionsgemeinden Davos Dorf, Davos Platz, Davos Frauenkirch, Davos Glaris, Davos Monstein und Davos Wiesen. Die höchstgelegenste Stadt Europas (1.560 m) hat eine Einwohnerzahl von etwa 11.000. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich Davos zu einem bekannten Luftkurort und Wintersportgebiet. Vom Tal gesehen beherrschen die vorgelagerten Berge Seehorn (2'238 m), Büelenhorn (2'512 m), Jakobshorn (2'590 m) und Rinerhorn (2'528 m) das Bild. In Davos findet jährlich das Weltwirtschaftsforum statt.

Am 20. Dezember fuhr ich dann mit dem Zug nach Davos. Abends kam ich an und einige Teamer waren bereits da. Ich kannte bisher niemanden, zwei von Ihnen hatte ich aber kurz auf der Schulung getroffen. Ich mache nun zum dritten mal die Bar, diesmal im Hotel Real. Das Haus hat 23 Zimmer und faßt 40 Gäste. Wir sind insgesamt 10 Teamer, die alle sehr nett wirken. Das Haus ist alt, urig und verwinkelt. Die Bar befindet sich im Speisesaal und ist ganz ok ausgestattet. Hier läßt es sich arbeiten.

Davos is a municipality in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It has a permanent population of round about 11,000. Davos is located on the Landwasser River in the Swiss Alps. Davos is host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual meeting of global political and business elites and the home of one of Switzerland's biggest ski resorts. At the end of every year it serves as the site of the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, hosted by the HC Davos local hockey team. There are six main ski areas in winter, with a total of 320 km (200 miles) of slopes.

I took the train to Davos at 20 December. I arrived in the evening while a few of my work-mates were already there. I didn´t really know anybody; only two I met at the course in Austria. I work as a barkeeper for the fourth season with this company. The hotel “Real” has 23 rooms and sleeps 40 people. We are 10 workers which seem all very nice. The house is a bit old but nice, traditional with a lot of wood inside. The bar is located in the dining room and is quite alright to work with. I would say I have no problems to work here.

In 515 Tagen bin ich durch 5 Länder gereist. Eine grandiose Reise ist nun zu Ende. Ich habe viele tolle Leute getroffen, wunderschöne Orte gesehen, interessante Städte besucht, spaßige Jobs gehabt mit super Kollegen, viel Neues erfahren; meine Abenteuer sind aber noch lange nicht zuende. Ich will noch viel mehr erleben und bestaunen.

Nach so vielen unterschiedlichen Ländern kann ich trotzdem immer noch nicht sagen, wo es mir am besten gefallen hat. Jedes Land hat seine schönen Ecken und interessante Kulturen und Menschen.

Von Dublin in Irland bin ich direkt nach München geflogen. Ich hatte einen Termin für eine Schulung und habe zwei Nächte einen Stopover eingelegt und eine Freundin besucht; auch eine von denen, die ich auf einer meinen Reisen kennengelernt habe.

Nach München nahm ich den Zug nach Österreich und landete dann irgendwann in Saalbach-Hinterglemm im Salzburger Land zur Barkeeper-Schulung, hier war ich bereits zweimal. Ich werde wieder für meinen alten Arbeitgeber FROSCH Sportreisen arbeiten, wie bereits vor meinem Kanada-Trip als ich in Italien war. Nach drei Nächten ging es dann endlich wieder heim um Freunde und Familie wiederzusehen. Nur etwa 4 Wochen später startete mein neuer Job in Davos in der Ostschweiz im Kanton Graubbünden als Barkeeperin.

I travelled 515 days through 5 countries. An awesome journey has come to an end. I met great people; saw beautiful places, visit interesting cities, had fun jobs with superb co-workers. I learned lots of new stuff and my adventures are still not over. I wanna see and explore more.

So many various countries and still I cannot say which my favorite is. Every country has its beauty; interesting culture and friendly people.

From Dublin in Ireland I flew straight to Munich. I had an appointment for a course and a stopover to visit a friend was a great opportunity. She is one of my many travel mates I know from one of my trips.

After two nights in Munich I took the train towards Austria to Saalbach-Hinterglemm to join a bartender course for my new and old employer “FROSCH Sportreisen”. My last job was right before my Canada trip in Italy. After three nights it was time to go back home to family and friends. Only four weeks later I started working as a bartender in Switzerland in a town called Davos.
