Chíos

Die Nachbarinsel Chíos ist die fünftgrößte Insel Griechenlands hinter Rhodos. Sie liegt etwa 0000 km südlich von Lésbos. Dort landen keine Chartermaschinen, so dass die Gäste, wenn sie nicht aus Athen kommen auf Lésbos landen und dann mit der Fähre weiterfahren. Diese Gäste setze ich nur ins Taxi. Einige von Ihnen verbringen auch einen Teil ihres Urlaubs auf Lésbos. Auf Chíos arbeitet meine Kollegin Ester für ATTIKA, sie ist Holländerin und lebt nun auf der Insel.

Ende August habe ich es endlich geschafft und wir beide hatten Zeit, so dass ich sie besuchen konnte. Es wird auch gewünscht, dass wir die Nachbarinseln kennen und ich war froh eine weitere Insel besichtigen zu können. Einige meiner Gäste, die beide Inseln kennen, sagten mir stets, dass Ihnen Chíos besser gefallen hatte, daher war ich sehr gespannt. Leider sollte man ja seine Gäste nicht allzu lang alleine lassen, daher waren mehr als zwei Nächte nicht drinnen.

Mit der Fähre von NEL Lines dauert die Überfahrt drei Stunden. Alle Decktickets und Sitzkarten waren ausgebucht, daher musste ich ein Ticket für eine nur geringfügig teurere Vierer-Kabine nehmen.

Am späten Abend erreichte ich Chíos-Stadt oder Chora (wie die Hauptstadt genannt wird). Als wir ins Hafenbecken einliefen, fiel mir gleich die Ähnlichkeit zu Mytilíni auf; sogar die gleichen Geschäfte waren da. Das Hafenbecken war viel größer und die Stadt wirkte, obwohl sie viel kleiner war, doch größer als die Hauptstadt auf Lésbos.

Ester hat mir einige Hotels gezeigt, wir haben dort auch das Frühstücksbüfett ausprobiert. Ich habe die Landschaft ein wenig bewundern können, einige Strände gesehen, Dörfer besucht und auch ein verlassenes Dorf. Wir hatten leider nur Zeit für den Süden. Ich hatte zwar nur einen kurzen Einblick, aber ich denke Lésbos ist etwas vielseitiger; ja auch größer. Perfekt wären eine Woche Chíos und zwei Wochen Lésbos. Auf jeden Fall eine sehr schöne Insel mit sehr interessanten Dörfern, die viel seitiger sind als auf Lésbos.

Kurz vor Saisonende hat mich Ester auch noch einmal besucht. Sie war letztes Jahr hier, hatte aber nicht viel gesehen.

Kambos

The neighboring island Chíos is the fifth largest island of Greece after Rhodes. It is located about 000 km south of Lésbos. There are no charter flights. If the guests do not come via Athens they have to land on Lésbos and keep going by ferry. This clients I only give them a taxi. Some of my clients spend a part of their holiday also on Lésbos. The ATTIKA rep on Chíos is my colleague Ester. She is from the Netherlands and lives there now.

End of August I made it. I finally visited her. It is wanted that we know about the neighboring islands and I was happy to be able to see another island. Some of my guests who know both destinations told me that they prefer Chíos that is why I was really looking forward. Unfortunately I cannot leave alone my guests for too long so I was not able to stay away for no more than two days.

The trip with the NEL Lines ferry takes about three hours. All deck and seat tickets were taken so I had to get a bed in a cabin for four which was not much more expensive.

Late at the evening I reached Chíos or Chora how the capital is known. When we arrived the harbor basin right away I realized that it reminded me totally of Mytilíni. Also they have the same shops. The harbor basin was much bigger. The city seems to be bigger as well although It I much smaller.

Ester showed me some hotels. We also tested the breakfast buffet. I admired the landscape, saw some beaches and visit a few villages and also an abandoned village. Unfortunately we did not have much time; we just drove through the south. I got a brief introduction but I think Lésbos is a bit more versatile. Well, it is bigger. Perfect would be one week on Chíos and two weeks on Lésbos. Definitely a beautiful island with very interesting villages which are more versatile than the ones on Lesbos

Lésbos ist nun nicht unbedingt als Partyinsel bekannt; es gibt eine Strand-Disko, die auch nur in der Hauptsaison auf hat und sich auch nur am Wochenende richtig füllt, und es gibt ein paar Bars.

Ich war bei einigen Geburtstagen der Reiseleiter und ab und an in der Disse, in einigen Bars, auf einem Sardinen-Fest oder wir haben uns abends irgendwo mit ner Flasche Wein entweder am Strand oder oben auf der Burg vergnügt.

Going out

Lésvos ist not really known as a party island. Mólyvos has one Beach Bar which is only open in the main season and only full on the weekends and a few bars.

I was at a few birthday parties from the other reps and every now and then in the discotheque or in the bars. We also been at a sardine festival or we just sad down on the beach or at the castle and had fun with a bottle of wine.

Wieder Besuch

Meine Wohnung mit ihren zwei Zimmern ist groß genug, und damit war es kein Problem, weitere Freunde einzuladen. Aus Bequemlichkeit und um meinen Rücken von der weichen Matratze eine Erholung zu bieten, schlaf ich eh schon seit Wochen auf der Couch und somit war mein Schlafzimmer unbewohnt.

Christian kam zusammen mit dem Flug, mit dem auch meine Gäste ankamen, an. Ich war mit dem Auto da, da der erste Weg uns natürlich zum LIDL führte, um einen Bier-Großeinkauf zu machen.

Gulf of Kalloni

Wir haben Vaterá besucht, waren mit Adriana und ihren Freunden im Westen, schwammen an verschiedenen Stränden, waren essen, besuchten Bergdörfer, haben ein Kloster besucht und fanden uns nach dem Verfahren auf in den Hügeln mit einer wunderschönen Aussicht wieder.

Christian hat mich begleitet, wenn ich in den Süden, meine Gäste in den Hotels besucht habe oder hat gewartet bis ich wieder da bin. In dieser einen Woche habe ich auch wieder Orte gesehen, die ich noch nicht kannte. War ne nette Zeit.

Visit from another friend

My two bedroom apartment is big enough so there was no reason to have more friends over. I am sleeping on my sofa for weeks anyway to give my back a rest from the soft mattress of my bed so my bedroom was available. Christian came with the same flight than my clients. I picked him up with my car because our first stop had to be the German supermarket to restock our beer supplies.

We visited Vaterá, went west with Adriana and her friends, swam on different beaches, went out for dinners and lunches, checked out mountain villages, had a look at a monastery and had a beautiful view from the mountains where we went by accident.

Christian accompanied me when I went to visit my clients in the hotels or he waited until I was back. In this one week I saw places I have not seen before. We had an awesome time.

Zwischen den Flügen am Flughafentag, den ich, wenn ich mit dem Auto dort bin, eigentlich immer am Strand verbringe, bin ich diesmal in die Hauptstadt zu einem Kulturtag. Nachdem ich gehört habe, dass die Museum kurzfristig wieder geöffnet habe, musste ich diese doch auch mal sehen.

Ich bin also erst in die Stadt zum Neuen und Alten Archäologischem Museum, dann durch die Einkaufsstraße marschiert und anschließend in die Ausstellung des berühmten griechischen Malers Theofilos.

One day in Mytilíni

At the airport day where I usually go to the beach between the two flights I spent a day in the capital. I heard that the museums suddenly opened.

First I went to the New and the Old Archeological Museums and then I did a stroll through the traditional shopping street. I also visit the gallery of the famous Greek painter Theofilos.

Feuer

Mitte Juli brach in Pétra ein Feuer aus. Melanie und ich konnten es von unserem Balkon beobachten. Es war nicht das erste in diesem Jahr; von Adrianas Balkon sahen wir das erste, was aber etwas kleiner war.

Dies hier war das größte seit langer Zeit. Jedes Jahr brechen kleine und große Feuer aus, meist Brandstiftung. Seit etwa vier Jahren werden Brände von irgendjemand mit Absicht gelegt und bisher wurde die Person nicht erwischt.

Das Feuer ging bis in die Nacht, es waren drei Löschflugzeuge unterwegs sowie ein Löschhelikopter. Zwei Flugzeuge mussten zum Wasser auffüllen wieder zum Flughafen nach Mytilíni, die andern füllten ihre Tanks direkt vor Ort in der Bucht.

Es hat seit Wochen nicht geregnet und die Insel ist sehr groß und dadurch sind die Feuerwehren auf der Insel verteilt und es dauert bis sie kommen.

Nur wenige Tage später war ein weiteres Feuer bei Mólyvos, bei weitem aber nicht so groß. Es gab noch weitere im Laufe der nächsten Wochen. Hoffe das der Schuldige bald gefasst wird, am besten von den Einheimischen, denn die sind die ersten, wenn sie ein Feuer sehen, die zum Ort des Geschehens rasen, um die Person ausfindig zu machen.

Fire

Mid of July there was a big fire near Pétra. Melanie and I we were able to see it from my balcony. It was not the first one this year. I could see the first one from Adriana’s balcony. This was far smaller than this one.

Almost the whole hillside burned down

This was the biggest since a long time. Every year there are many small and big fires in different places mostly around Mólyvos and Pétra. Since four years fires were started by arsonists and until now nobody knows who it is.

The fire was on till the night. There were three airplanes and one helicopter. Two planes had to go every time back to the airport in Mytilíni to fill up the tanks. The others did it right here on the coast.

There was not any rain for some weeks and the island is so big it takes some time till the fire brigade is here.

Just a few days later there was another fire near Mólyvos but fortunately not as big as the last one. There were more in the next weeks too. I hope somebody will catch that person. Every time there is a fire you see the people who live here rushing to this place and try to find that person who is responsible.

Die griechische Nacht kann man wohl in jeder Urlaubsdestination in Griechenland findet. Eine typische Veranstaltung, die von den Deutschen eher gemieden wird. Wir sind doch dann doch mehr Individualisten und nicht so für Gruppenveranstaltungen zu haben. Dafür aber sehr beliebt bei den Osteuropäern oder auch den Engländern, die viel in Gruppen unternehmen.

Bei der griechischen Nacht gibt es Abendessen, meist „all you can eat“, Wein und es werden traditionelle Tänze gezeigt, bei denen man auch mitmacht.

Meine tschechische Kollegin Adriana hat mich also mitgenommen. Ich saß an einem komplett tschechischen Tisch, aber wie ich auch schon in anderen Ländern gemerkt habe, kann sich ja auch mit nur wenigen Wörter und Gestik trotzdem unterhalten.

Das Essen war super, der Wein lecker und die Tänze interessant. Als Reiseleiter kann man sich auch nicht zieren, wenn man aufgefordert wird.

Die Taverne “The Traditional” liegt in einer Nebenstraße und die Tische standen auch auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite. Es wurde also mitten auf der Straße getanzt. Wenn ein Auto kam, wartete es geduldig bis der Tanz vorbei war und es passieren konnte.

Ein sehr schöner Abend bzw. auch Nacht.

Greek Night in Pétra

The Greek Night you will find probably in every tourist destination all over Greece. It is typical event which is mostly avoided by the Germans. We are more individuals and do not like group events so much. Different are the East Europeans and also the English people, they like those things more than us.

At the Greek Night you will get dinner, mostly all you can eat, wine and you will see traditional dances where you will be included.

My Czech colleague Adriana took me with her. I was sitting at table with only Czech people but as I know from other countries I visited it is possible to have kind of a conversation just with a few words and some gestures. The food was yammy, the wine great and the dances very interesting. When you are a rep there is hardly a chance that you can say no if somebody ask you to dance.

The taverna “The Traditional” is located in a secondary road and the tables are also on the other side of the street. So the dances takes place in the middle of the street and whenever a car came it waited till the dance was over so he can drive through.

It was a very nice evening and night.

Ich bekomme Besuch

Molyvos

Ende Juni bekam ich Besuch von Melanie. Sie blieb knappe drei Wochen. Mit ihr habe ich viele Dinge gesehen, die ich noch nicht kannte. Wir waren fast überall auf der Insel unterwegs. Orte gemeinsam anzuschauen bringt dann doch einfach mehr Spaß. Sie hat mich bei meiner Arbeit begleitet. Meist habe ich sie am Strand abgesetzt und bin dann in die Hotels. Leider kommt immer extra Arbeit auf einen zu, wenn man das am wenigsten möchte, wie z. B. Beschwerden und Probleme wie Streiks. Wir hatten aber trotzdem viel mehr Zeit als manch andere, die man bei der Arbeit besucht. Schön, dass du da warst, Melanie!

Visit from a friend

End of June I got a visitor. Melanie stayed for almost three weeks. I have seen places with her I have not seen before. We were almost everywhere. To see things together is definitely more fun than do it by yourself. She accompanied me to work. Mostly I just dropped her off at the beach while I was visiting my clients in the hotels. Unfortunately there seems to be always extra work when you really want to spent some time with a friend, for example complaints and problems like strikes. We still had an awesome time and we probably had more time together then you would usually have when you visit someone at their workplace. Great that you were here, Melanie!

Ein neuer Ausflug diese Jahr ist ein Spaziergang durch Mólyvos. Elsa, die auch den Ausflug in den Westen macht, führt die Gäste gekleidet in einem altertümlichen Kleid durch den Ort.
Die Burg wird besucht, man geht in eine Kirche, dann die engen Gassen rauf und runter, trifft vielleicht mal Bewohner mit denen man sich unterhält, besucht die alte Moschee, ein türkisches Herrenhaus, macht eine Kaffeepause und wird auf interessante Dinge hingewiesen, an denen man ansonsten unbemerkt vorbeilaufen wird.
So sieht man Mólyvos auch von einer anderen Seite; es war sehr interessant.

Walking tour through the secrets of Mólyvos

A new excursion this year is thye walking tour in Mólyvos. Elsa who is also doing the Wild West excursion walks the clients through the town dressed in an nice old fashion dress.
You will visit the castle, see one of the churches from the inside, walk through the small alleys and maybe you meet some habitants to talk to. You go inside of the old mosque and a former Turkish mansion. You do a coffee break and you will shown things you would usually pass by without noticing.
You will see Mólyvos from a different angle. Very interesting.

An der Südküste habe ich vier weitere Hotels, je zwei an der östlichen Küste (Plomári) und zwei an der westlichen (Vaterá). Die meisten Gäste habe ich aber in Vaterá, sprich da fahre ich fast jede Woche hin. Die kleine Streusiedlung liegt 58 km von Mólyvos und dauert etwa 1,5 Stunden. Hier findet man den längsten Strand der Insel, knapp 10 km lang. Wir sind der einzige Veranstalter dort; nur im Juli und August wird es etwas voller; vor allen Dingen am Wochenende. Die meisten kommen hier her, um Badeurlaub zu machen.

Auf dem Weg zum Westen kommt man durch nur wenige Ort hindurch, unter anderem Polichnítos, wo die heißen Quellen und wo ich ab und an mal einen Stopp einlege. Es gibt in der Ecke einige traditionelle Dörfer und ein paar Strände am Golf von Kalloní.

Im östlichen Teil liegt der zweitgrößte Ort der Insel, Plomári, einige Veranstalter haben auch hier Hotels bzw. im kleinerem Vorort Ágios Isídoros, wo auch ich ein Hotel und ein Haus mit Apartments habe. Hier habe ich nur wenige Gäste.
Plomári ist bekannt für seinen Ouzo. Es gibt hier vier Distillerien von über 25 auf der ganzen Insel.

The South

On the south coast I have four hotels. Two in the east (Plomári) and two in the west (Vaterá). Most of the clients I have in Vaterá. That means I have to drive there pretty much every week once. The small village along the shore is located 58 km away from Mólyvos and it takes me almost 1.5 hours to go there. Here you will find the longest beach on the island – about 10 km long. We are the only tour operator at all in this area. Only in July and August there is a bit of something going on when the Greeks are going there for their holiday; mostly on the weekends. The biggest amount of people come here to do just a beach holiday.

On the way to Vaterá you pass Polichnítos. Here there is one of the five thermal hot springs. Once in a while I stopp here. You find some traditional villages here and also beaches on the Gulf of Kalloní.

On the east part of the south there is the second largest town of Lésbos – Plomári. Some tour operators have hotels here too or rather in the small village next door Ágios Isídoros. I have got one hotel and one apartments here.
Plomári is known for its Ouzo. There are four distilleries of about 25 all together on this island.

Der Westen ist ganz besonders. Hier waren zwei der großen Vulkane, die seit dem Ausbruch vor 20 Millionen Jahren ein interessantes Landschaftsbild hinterlassen haben. An der Nordküste sind einige der schönsten Sandstrände der Insel.

The west is very special. Here are two of the vulcanos which errupted 20 million years ago and formed a interesting landscape. On the north coast you will find some of the most beautiful sandy beaches of the island.

Excursion: Turkey

Ausflug: Türkei

Ein weiterer Ausflug, den wir anbieten, führt in den nur etwa 5 Seemeilen (knapp 10 Kilometer) entfernte nächsten Kontinent, in die Türkei.

Viel zu früh am Morgen, noch vor 7 Uhr, fuhren wir mit dem Bus nach Mytilíni. Noch durch den Zoll durch und auf die kleine türkische Fähre, die täglich um 9 Uhr ablegt. Es waren noch fünf weitere Reiseleiter aus England, Dänemark und Norwegen dabei. Die fahrt dauert 90 Minuten, dann legten wir in der Stadt Ayvalık an. Ein türkischer Reiseführer erwartete uns und wir fuhren in Richtung der Ausgrabungsstätte von Pergamon. Unterwegs bekamen wir noch interessante Informationen über die Gegend. Nach einer knappen Stunde waren wir am Asklepieion, eine der berühmtesten Heilstätten der Antike von Pergamon; hier wurden wir etwa ne Stunde rumgeführt. Der andere Teil von Pergamon, die Akropolis konnte man in der Ferne am Berghang sehen.
Im Anschluss kurze Pause am Getränkestand mit den typischen Souvenirständen, an denen, wenn man vorbeigeht, immer hört, dass es hier günstiger ist als nebenan. Ganz anders als in Griechenland, wo man nicht so gedrängt wird zu kaufen. Asien, halt. 
In einem typischen großen Touri-Restaurant (Flaggen der Länder auf den langen Tischen) gab es ein richtig leckeres typisch türkisches Büffet.
Nach dem Mittagessen fuhren wir zum obligatorischen Teppichhändler, was ich allerdings sehr interessant fand. Ich hab nichts gegen Verkaufsveranstaltungen, wobei dies hier auch nicht so einen extremen Charakter hatte.
Zunächst wurde einem gezeigt, wie Seide hergestellt wird. Ähnelte dem sehr, als ich in einer Seidenfabrik in Vietnam war. Man konnte auch diverse Weberinnen zusehen, sie gerade Teppiche herstellen. Nun werden einem etliche verschiedene Arten von Teppichen aus unterschiedlichen Materialien gezeigt, die sie durch die Luft wirbelten. Sehr interessant fand ich an den leuchtenden Seidenteppichen, wie sie den Farbton wechseln, je nachdem von welcher Seite man schaut. Ich habe ein wenig zu viel Interesse gezeigt, also wurde mit von dem deutschsprachigem Teppichhändler so viele Teppiche gezeigt, die preislich bei einem halben Monatslohn anfingen bis hin zu über einem Zweimonatslohn.

Wir fuhren wieder zurück nach Ayvalık, wo wir 1,5 Stunden zur freien Verfügung hatten. Ich habe erstmal fünf Packungen Apfeltee gekauft, sowie ein frisches Brot und Baklava, das typische sehr süße türkisches Gebäck. Ich war wirklich in Asien, denn kaum jemand konnte auch nur ein Wort englisch sprechen. Mit meinem paar Wörtern in Griechisch kam eher weiter. Die Stadt an sich war nicht so spannend. Nicht viel zu sehen hier.
Um 18 Uhr fuhr die Fähre dann wieder zurück.

Ich fand es gut, dass ich den Ausflug gemacht habe. Super für jemanden, der noch nie in der Türkei war und dem lange Bus- und Fährfahrten nicht stören.

Excursion: Turkey

Another excursion we offer goes to Turkey. The next continent is just 5 sea miles (just under 10 kilometers) away.

Way too early we left on a bus to Mytilíni. Through customs and we went on the small Turkish ferry. The ferry leaves daily at 9 am. There were five other reps from England, Denmark and Norway on board. After 90 minutes we arrived in the town of Ayvalık. A Turkish guide expected us. We drove for about one hour towards the archaeological excavation Asklepieion in Pergamon by bus. On the way he gave us interesting information about this area. Asklepieion is one of the most famous spa from the ancient world. We got a guided tour for about one hour there. We could see the other part of Pergamon far away on a hill, the Acropolis.
Afterwards we went for a short drinking break to a kiosk with the typical souvenir stands which when you pass them the merchants will tell you that here you will get the best price. Totally different to Greece where they do not really force you to buy something. Well, this is Asia. 
In a typical big touristic restaurant (country flags on the end of the tables) we got a very yammy authentic Turkish buffet.
After lunch we visit the obligatory carpet dealer. I thought it was quite interesting. I do not mind events where they try to force you to buy. It was not too extremly like this.

First we were shown how silk is produced. It was very similar what I saw in the silk factory in Vietnam. You can also watch the weaver during their work. You will see several different kind of carpets made of different kind of materials.They swirl them through the air. I liked it how they change their colours if you look at them from a different angle. I showed a little bit too much interest so I got to see a whole collection of carpets. The prices starts from my two weeks wages till my two month wages.

After I did not buy a carpet we drove back to Ayvalık where we had 1.5 hours free time. I bought five packages of Turkish apple tea, a fresh loaf of bread and Baklava, the Turkish sweet dessert. I was really in Asia than almost nobody could speak one word in English. I had to help myself with the few words I know in Greek. The town itself was not very intersting. There is not much to see. At 6 pm we went back by ferry to Greece.

I was happy that I went on this excursion. Great for somebody who has never be in Turkey and who does not mind long bus and ferry trips.

In einen meiner Hotels ist auch eine Gruppe von Frosch Sportreisen. Der kleine Veranstalter organisiert Gruppenreisen, die einige verschiedene sportliche Betätigungen anbieten. Auf Lésbos könnten die Gäste wandern, Mountainbike fahren, surfen lernen und andere Sportarten ausüben wie Schnorcheln, Kajak fahren, Volleyball spielen, Nordic Walking, Workout usw..
Ich versteh mich gut mit den drei Reiseleitern und so kam es, dass ich, wenn ich Zeit hab, die angebotenen Wanderungen mitmachte.
Die erste ging in das etwa 5 km entfernte Bergdorf Vafiós und auf einem anderen Weg zurück.
Es waren etwa zwei Stunden hin, zum Mittagessen in eine Taverne und dann weitere 2 Stunden zurück. Eine sehr schöne Wanderung. Der Weg ist nicht gekennzeichnet, würde daher nie diesen Weg alleine gehen. Es war eine nette und lustige Gruppe. Mache ich bestimmt noch öfters.

Vafios

Walking tour to Vafiós

In one of my hotels is also a German tour operator ‘Frosch Sportreisen’ (Frog sport travels). They organise group travels where you can do different kind of sport. On Lésvos you can do mounatin biking, walking, learn to surf and other kind of sport like snorkeling, kajaking, nordic walking, workout, volleyball and others.
I got in touch with the three reps and I tarted doing some of the walking tours with them whenever I have time.
The first one was a tour to the next mountain village which is about 5 km from here and on another way back.
After we walked for about two hours we had a lunch break in a taverna and we walked for another two hours back to Mólyvos. It is a very nice walking tour. The pathes are not marked so you would not find it by yourself. It was a funny group. I will definetely do it again.

My birthday

Geburtstag

Und wieder ein Geburtstag, den ich in Griechenland feiere. Ich habe die wenigen Reiseleiter, die bereits auf der Insel sind eingeladen; sowie natürlich auch die Mädels aus meinem Büro. Wir haben in einem Restaurant mit Blick auf das Meer zu Abend gegessen. Wir kannten uns kaum, aber es kamen acht Leute und ich habe ein paar nette Geschenke bekommen. Ich war auch schon am Vorabend mit anderen zum Essen und hinterher für Cocktails in ner Bar.

Birthday

Another birthday I celebrate in Greece. I invited the few reps who are already on the island and of course the girls working in my office. We were eight people and we had a nice dinner in a taverna with a great view over the sea. We did not really know each other at this time but eight people came and I also got some nice presents. I was also out for dinner the previous evening including some cocktails in a bar with others.

Nächster Ort ‘Pétra’

Nur 4 km von Mólyvos liegt der zweitbelebteste Urlaubsort ‚Pétra’, was soviel wie „Felsen“ heißt. Mitten in dem Ort steht dieser Felsen. 114 Stufen führen hinauf zum Wahrzeichen der Stadt auf dem in etwa 35 m Höhe die 1747 erbaute und 1840 restaurierte Marienkirche Panagía Glykofiloúsa (süßküssende Madonna) steht. Von hier oben hat man eine hübsche Aussicht auf die Dächer und die Felder der Stadt.

Es gibt ein altes türkisches Herrenhaus zu besichtigen, eine winzige Ouzo-Distellerie und einen langen Strand, dessen Liegen voll von Touristen an der mit Cafés und Restaurants gesäumten Straße sind.

Next town ‘Pétra’

Only 4 km from Mólyvos is the second bussiest touristic town ‘Pétra’ located, which means ‘rock’. In the middle of the town you see this rock mountain topped with the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss). You reach the top by climbing the 114 steps carved into the stone to earn the view over the roofs of the town.

There is also an old Turkish mansion and a tiny ouzo distillery and a long human-filled beach lined with cafe's and restaurants.

Wanderung Lafiónas

Es ist erst Ende April also perfektes Wetter zum wandern. Ich traf einen Engländer, der ein Buch über Wanderung im Norden von Lésbos geschrieben hat. Zeit also, um ein wenig wandern zu gehen. I fuhr zum Startpunkt, das nahe gelegene Bergdorf Lafiónas.

Die Tour war super, bis auf einen alten Mann auf einem Esel traf ich niemanden. Ich bin etwa 1,5 Stunden in schönster Landschaft mit toller Aussicht aus Pétra und Mólyvos um einen Gipfel herumgewandert.

Walking tour Lafiónas

It was just end of April so still the perfect weather for walking. I meet this English guy who wrote a book about walks in the north of Lésvos. So it was time to try one of it. I drove to the near by mountain village of Lafiónas where the start was.

The tour was awesome. I did not meet anybody except an old guy on a donkey. I walked for about 1.5 hours in beautiful landscape and great views over Pétra and Mólyvos around the peak.

Heiße Quellen

Der Ursprung der Insel Lésbos ist vulkanisch. Daher gibt es einige heiße Thermalquellen auf der Insel.

Zurzeit sind drei Quellen geöffnet: Gerás am Golf von Géra, Thermí und der südlichen Ostküste und Polichnítos im westlichen Teil des Südens.
Gesehen habe ich alle, drinnen war ich allerdings nur in den in Polichnítos; für mich die schönsten. Sie liegen in netter Umgebung, haben ein Café, das leckere Sachen anbietet angeschlossen und ich muss sowieso öfters daran vorbeifahren. Das Wasser hat um die 40 - 49˚ und tut einen Rücken, der lange im Auto, am Computer sitzen und viel auf dem Sofa liegt, sehr gut.

In der Umgebung der Quelle gibt es einen offiziellen Wanderweg. Als ich die Frau vom Café fragte, lernte ich mir „Frag nie Griechen nach Entfernungen- und Zeitangaben“. Die Wanderung sollte 8 Kilometer sein, ich dachte in 2 Stunden müsste ich das schaffen. (Übrigens schätzte die Frau, dass der Rundweg!!! 8 km hin und 8 km zurück wäre und man würde vielleicht eine halbe Stunde benötigen, naja.)

Leider sind diese offiziellen Wanderungen wohl schon länger nicht mehr abgelaufen worden, um zu schauen, ob die Beschilderung noch funktioniert. Unterwegs habe ich heruntergefallene und dann verkehrt herum liegende Schilder in die richtige Richtung drehen müssen und an einer Stelle muss ein Schild fehlen, denn nach knapp 1,5 Stunden habe ich etwa eine Stunde versucht, den Wanderweg zu finden. Ich gab dann irgendwann auf und bin zur Strasse zurück, die ich vor nicht allzu langer Zeit überquert hatte und bin aus Zeitmangel dann (übrigens sehr leicht) zu meinem Auto zurückgetrampt.

Hot springs

Lésvos is vulcanic origin so here you will find several thermal hot springs.

At the moment three of them are open: Gerás at the Gulf of Géra, Thermí and at the western part of the south in Polichnítos.
I have seen all of them but only in Polichnítos I was inside. For me it is the best one. It is located in a beautiful area and it has a nice café which offers yammy stuff. I have to pass it anyway every now and then. The water temperature is about 40 till 49 degrees and feels great for a back which has to sit either in the car or at a computer a lot and also lies on the sofa way to much.

Around the thermal springs there is an official walking tour. When I asked the woman from the café I learnt never ask a Greek for distances and time estimates. The walking trip is 8 km long and I thought I could do it in two hours easily. (By the way the woman said the round trip!!! Would be 8 km one way and 8 km back and might take about 30 minutes, well...).

Unfortunately these official walking tours should be checked sometime if the signs are still allright. On the way I found a few signs which have fallen down and lay towards the wrong direction. I turned them correctly. At one time about after 1.5 hours one sign must be missing. I was lost and I was looking for the correct path for almost an hour. I gave up and went back to a street which I crossed not far back. I was running out of time so I hitchhiked (extremly easly) back to my car.

Ausflug Wilder Westen – deutsche Tour

Nur zwei Tage später hatte ich die Möglichkeit die gleiche Tour in Deutsch mitzumachen. Erstens ist es eh besser, en Ausflug zu kennen, den man auch verkauft und ich wusste, dass der Park des Versteinerten Waldes heute geschlossen war, so dass wir anstatt dessen ins Museum nach Sígri fahren würden.
Die Tour ist ansonsten die gleiche. Da wir auch keine Gäste aus Kalloní hatten, fuhren wir über die Nordroute in den Westen. Also auch wieder anders. Die Stopps waren auch wieder Vatoússa, dann aber das Museum in Sígri. Das moderne Naturgeschichtliche Museum hat nicht nur Funde aus dem Versteinerten Wald, sondern auch aus anderen Gebieten der Erde u. a. auch aus Deutschland, außerdem widmet es sich auch der Geologie im Allgemeinen. Wir sind dann noch ein wenig durch den Ort in dem man auch in den Überresten einer alten Burg spazieren kann.

Skála Eressoú und im Anschluss das Kloster Moní Limónos waren auch nicht schlimm zweimal gesehen zu haben. Die deutsche Reiseführerin Elsa, die in Griechenland studiert hat, hat die Tour sehr interessant rübergebracht und verschiedene Reiseführerinnen erzählen verschiedene Geschichten aus dem Alltag.

Excursion: Wild West – German tour

Just two days later I had the chance to go on the same trip into the West but this time in German. On the one hand it is better to know the tour you are selling and on the other hand I knew that the park of the Petrified Forst will be close on this day so we will visit the museum in Sígri instead.
The excursion is otherwise the same. Because we did not have clients from Kalloní we went on the northern route to the west. So different as well. The stopps were first Vatoússa and than Sígri. The museum shows not only excibits of the Petrified Forest also some from all over the world, from Germany as well and the museum explains about Geology in general. After the visit we walked a bit through the village where there is also the ruins of an old castle.

To see Skála Eressoú and the monastery Moní Limónos again was not bad at all. The German tour guide Elsa who studied in Greece did a great job and different tour guides tell different stories.

Ausflug Wilder Westen – englische Tour

Den ersten Ausflug, den ich gemacht habe war der Ausflug, der sich nennt „Wilder Westen“. Da ich die einzige Deutsche bin im Büro hatte ich zunächst die Chance die Tour der Engländer und Holländer mitzumachen.
Die Tour mit dem Bus geht zunächst in Richtung Süden zur Inselmitte nach Kalloní (etwa 30 Minuten Fahrt), um dort weitere Gäste einzusammeln.
Wir haben zunächst das größte Mönchskloster „Moní Limónos“ besucht und danach zur Kaffeepause in das Bergdorf „Vatoússa“. Auch hier sind die Häuser traditionell aus Stein mit roten Dächern gebaut, wie auch in Mólyvos.
Zum wichtigsten Naturereignis der Insel fuhren wir in Anschluss; zum „Versteinertem Wald“. Dieser ist einmalig in Europa und gibt es nur noch einmal in der Form in Arizona in den USA. Vor etwa 20 Millionen Jahren ist dieses riesige Gebiet bei einem Vulkanausbruch ganz im Westen mit heißer Asche überdeckt worden und so wurden die Bäume versteinert.
Weiter fuhren wir an die Südküste an einen der schönsten Strände der Insel nach Skála Eressoú. Normalerweise macht man hier eine Badepause aber Anfang Mai ist es doch noch viel zu kalt dafür. Wir haben zu Mittag gegessen und sind dann über die Südroute durch die kleinen Dörfer wieder zurück.
Ein super Ausflug bei dem man so viel erfährt, was man sonst nie mitbekommen hätte.

Excursion: Wild West – English tour

The first excursion I did was the „Wild West“.  I am the only German in the office so there are just English excursions. I did the tour with the Dutch and the English.
With the bus we went south for 30 minutes to pick up other guests in Kalloní in the centre of Lésvos.
First we visited the biggest monastery on Lésvos “Moní Limónos” after that we did a coffee break in the traditional mountain village Vatoússa.
The most important natural site on this island was our next stop the ‘Petrified Forest’. It is unique in Europe. There is only something similar in Arizona.
About 20 million years ago this huge area in the far west was covered in hot ashes from a volcanic eruption. This is how the trees got petrified.
Further south we visited the coastal town Skala Erressoú. It is meant to be one of the most beautiful beaches on Lésvos. Usually here would be a lunch and swimming break but the water was still to cool for swimming in this time of the years so we just ate lunch.
We took the south route back through some small villages.
At this great excursion who will got so many information you would not here otherwise.

My apartment

Meine Wohnung

Es gibt ein Haus in Mólyvos in dem einige Reiseleiter wohnen. Leider war das Zimmer für mich zu teuer, so dass ich weiter suchte. Glücklicherweise rief die Vermieterin von meinem Vorgänger an. Es war die einzige Wohnung, die ich mir ansah und auch super günstig und mit einem fantastischen Ausblick von meinem Balkon auf das Meer.
Ich habe zwei Zimmer in der denkmalgeschützten Altstadt auf dem etwa 350 m hohen Hügel. Es ist ein traditionelles Steinhaus, was aus zwei Stockwerken besteht. Von außen ist meine Wohnung nicht erkennbar, denn ich habe im Schlafzimmer keine Fenster, das Zimmer liegt unter in der Erde. Über mir wohnt die Schwester meiner Vermieterin mit Ihrer Familie. Der Balkon und die Fenster sind zur Südseite. Das bedeutet, dass es hier im Sommer nicht zu heiß ist und im Winter nicht zu kalt. Zur Not gibt es ja noch die Klimaanlage.
Ich habe eine typisch griechische kleine Küche, aber gut ausgestattet und was fehlt wird gekauft oder bekomme ich von der Vermieterin.
Über den Winter wurde die Wohnung renoviert. Es gibt neue Fenster, neue Möbel und einen neuen gefliesten Boden; mein Vorgänger hat anscheinend die Wohnung wie ein Saustall hinterlassen und auch wahrscheinlich nie gereinigt.
Die Toilette mit Dusche (ja, man duscht so fast über dem Klo ohne Duschvorhang) ist draußen, direkt neben der Eingangstür. Mein Eingang ist aber so versteckt, dass man auch nackig ins Bad kann. Also kein Problem.
Mir gefällt meine kleine Wohnung. Ein paar Umdekorierungen, wie die Ikonen den vielen Schnick-Schnack verstecken und hier lässt es sich leben.
Ich parke mein Auto oben an der Burg und laufe nur etwa 3 Minuten die Stufen hinunter, die Richtung ist wunderbar zum Einkaufen.

My apartment

There is a house in Mólyvos where some reps are living. Unfortunately the room is too expensive for me. So I kept looking. Luckily the landlord from the guy who worked for ATTIKA before me called the office and told that she has an appartment for rent. It was the only flat I saw. It has a fantastic view over the sea from my tiny balcony.
I have two rooms in the landmarked old town on the hill whoich is about 350 m high. It is a traditonal two storey stone house. From the outside you cannot see the appartment because it is under the earth. Above me lives the sister of my landlord with her family. The balcony and the windows are towards the south part. That means that in summer it is not that hot and not that cold in winter. And if it is too hot or too cold I have air-con. I have also the typical small kitchen but excellent equipped. If something is missing my landlord gives it to me or I just buy small items.
Over the winter the appartment was renovated. There are new tiles instead of old timber floor board and new windows and furniture. My collegue who works on another island was – what I heard - a pig with cleaningness.
The toilet and shower (also typically in one room next to each other without a curtain) is outside just next to the front door. My entrance door is so hidden that you can actually go naked into the bathroom. So no problem at all.
I like my little flat. I just had to redecorated and remove the religious stuff and all the kitsch and now it is a place to live.
I park my car right on the top of the castle and go down the cobbled stairs for about 3 minutes. The right way if you have many shopping bags.
