Von Calgary nach Edmonton

Von Calgary nach Edmonton sind es nur 300 km, da wir erst nachmittags los sind und es eh früh dunkel wird, wollten wir auf halber Strecke anhalten und übernachten. Ich habe ein paar Couchsurfing-Anfragen gestellt und wir dachten uns, wenn wir unterwegs nichts hören, fahren wir bis Edmonton oder übernachten in einem günstigem Motel. Das war aber einfacher als gesagt. Wir sind durch Red Deer und Blackfalds bis wir ein Motel in Lacombe gefunden haben. Das Lacombe Motor Inn hat uns trotzdem noch je $ 40 (€ 28) gekostet. Das Zimmer war ok, hat nur extrem nach Raucherzimmer gerochen. Hier haben wir unsere kälteste Nacht bisher gehabt. Das Thermometer zeigte -17 °.

Die Orte durch die wir gefahren sind, sahen nicht sehr vielversprechend aus, naja es war dunkel. Die Straßen waren auch nicht geräumt, waren also voller Eis und Schnee so daß wir nur langsam voran kamen. Als wir Lacombe gegoogelt haben, haben wir festgestellt, dass es doch ein größerer nicht uninteressanter Ort ist. Es gibt eine nettes Stadtzentrum mit Gebäuden im Edwarian-Barock Stil. Die Stadt wurde öfters als Filmkulisse verwendet u. a. für „Brokeback Mountain“ und – wer sie kennt – die Opernsängerin Anna Maria Kaufmann (u. a. bekannt vom Phantom der Oper) ist hier aufgewachsen.Nach nem Kaffee im netten Café sind wir dann weiter nach Edmonton.

Lacombe Motor Inn

From Calgary to Edmonton

It is only 300 km from Edmonton to Calgary but we left in the afternoon. It is also getting dark quite early so our plan was to stay overnight somewhere between Calgary and Edmonton. I wrote couchsurfing inquiries and if we don´t hear from them back we either drove all the way to Edmonton or stay in a cheap motel on the way. Nobody answered from couchsurfing so we needed a motel, easier said than done. We drove through Red Deer and Blackfalds but couldn´t find a suitable one. Finally we found the Lacombe Motor Inn in Lacombe. It still cost us $ 40 each. The room was alright but it was a smoker room which smelled quite strong. The temperature here was the coldest we had so far. It was – 17 C.

The towns we passed were not very promising, well it was also dark. The highways were not cleared, still full of ice and snow so we had to drive slowly. We checked Wikipedia for Lacombe and found out it has quite a size and is not uninteresting at all. There is a nice town center with Edwardian style buildings. The town was used for a few movies as a film set, for example for “Brokeback Mountain”. The famous German/Canadian opera singer Anna Maria Kaufmann grew up here too. After a short stroll through town and a coffee in a very nice café we left for Edmonton.

Calgary (schottisch-gälisch für Strand an der Wiese – das ist einer der Erklärungen ) ist die drittgrößte  Stadt in Kanada und hat 1.096.833 Einwohner (Stand: Mai 2011). Sie wurde nach dem Ort Calgary in Schottland genannt.

Calgary liegt im Süden von Alberta in der Prärie und ist die größte Stadt dieser Provinz vor Edmonton, das sich ca. 300 km nördlich befindet. Etwa 80 Kilometer westlich erstrecken sich die Rocky Mountains.

In Calgary gibt es nur zwei Hostels, wegen der Flut im Juni diesen Jahres war aber nur eines geöffnet. Mit Glück haben wir noch zwei Betten im „Wicked Hostel“ für 36$ / 26 € bekommen. Wicked hat viele Bedeutungen, u. a. „geil, abgefahren, stark, cool“, aber auch „verrucht, schlimm, böse“. Letzteres paßt wohl eher. Das Hostel war nicht das sauberste, an jeder Ecke stand Müll rum. Man gewöhnt sich aber an alles.

Wir haben uns downtown angesehen. Ein tolle Sache is der „+15 Skyway“, das sind 18 km durch Gebäude verbundene Wege, die 15 Fuß über der Straße liegen. Man kann so durch die gesamte Innenstadt bewegen ohne rausgehen zu müssen. Wir haben in Chinatown lecker gegessen und nett eingekauft und das wars auch schon so ziemlich. Am Nachmittags gings dann weiter gen Norden.

Calgary was ranked as the world's cleanest city by Forbes Magazine in 2007.  More recently, the latest 2012 and 2013 report from the Economist Intelligence Unit said Calgary was tied for fifth-best place, with Adelaide, to live in the world. In addition, Money Senses's "Best Places to Live in Canada for 2013" study, ranks Calgary as the number one best city overall.

There are only two hostels in Calgary but only one is open because of the flood in June this year. Luckily we got two beds in the “Wicked Hostel” for 36 $. The name is the best description for the hostel if you take the negative meaning of wicked. The place was not the cleanest ever. There was stuff lying around in every possible corner but you get used to a lot of things.

We walked around downtown and did a bit of window shopping. Very impressive is the “+15 Skywalk”. It is a a public pedestrian walkway system which is 15 feet above street level and connects the buildings so you can cross downtown without being outside. We also walked through Chinatown and had a yummy dinner and this was pretty much it for Calgary. We left in the afternoon towards north.

Canmore

Am Nachmittag verließen wir dann von Banff und fuhren in den nur 25km entfernten Ort „Canmore“. Dort gibt es nur ein Hostel (Alpine Club of Canada – 25$ mit Mitgliedschaft, 36 $ ohne) außerhalb der Stadt. Es war genau das richtige, wir hatten ein Zimmer für uns, es waren wenig Leute da, es gab einen netten Aufenthaltsraum mit Kamin.

Am nächsten Morgen dann der Schreck, es hat über Nacht geschneit und alles war weiß geworden. Wir haben uns nur kurz den Ort angeschaut und nach dem Mittag sind dann weiter nach Calgary, es war doch wenig kühl geworden. Calgary liegt weitere 100 km westlich von Canmore.

From Banff to Calgary

In the afternoon we took off from Banff and reached Canmore which is just 25 km away. There is only one hostel (Alpine Club of Canada – 25 $ with membership, 36 $ without) out of town but a very nice one. It was not busy so we had the room by ourselves and they have a nice common room with a fireplace. I was a bit shocked at the next morning because in the night it started snowing so all green was gone and it was white instead.

We had a quick look in town and only a short walk because there was still a little snow storm going on and it was quite chilly.

We left Canmore after lunch and drove to Calgary which is about 100 km even more in the west.

Banff

Banff ist der größte Ort innerhalb des Banff-Nationalparks in der kanadischen Provinz Alberta. Banff hat eine Bevölkerung von 7.584 Einwohnern. (Stand 2011).

Der Ort erhielt seinen Namen im Jahr 1884 durch einen ehemaligen Direktor der Canadian Pacific Railway, Lord Stephen, bzw. nach seiner schottischen Geburtsstadt Banff.

In Banff sind wir zum „Samesun Hostel“, was wir uns ausgeguckt hatten (Frühstück war inklusive), aber auf gut Glück nicht vorreserviert hatten. Es war was frei und auch in Ordnung. Es hat eine Bar und Restaurant und ausreichend Platz in dem Zimmer und sogar ein Bad ist mit drin.

Hier blieben wir zwei Nächte. Wir haben ein paar kleine Wanderungen zu Seen, Wasserfällen und Canyons gemacht.

Katrin hat zufällig welche getroffen, die sie vom Anfang ihrer Reise her kennt, die haben uns eingeladen bei ihnen zu übernachten und da Halloween war sind wir zusammen auf eine Party. Meine erste richtige Halloween-Party und das auch noch so spontan. Wir sind dann noch für Kostüme in Dollar-Shop und Second Hand-Laden und die Party konnte losgehen. Schon das Vorglühen war ein Spaß und die Party noch mehr.

Am nächsten Nachmittag nach der Erholungsphase sind wir dann aufgebrochen.

Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The town has a population of 7,584 (2011). The area was named Banff in 1884 by George Stephen, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, recalling his birthplace in Banff, Scotland.

In Banff we stayed at the “Samesun Hostel“, we looked it up before but didn´t booked it. We were lucky there was room. Breakfast was included, this was one of the reasons we chose it. It also has a bar and a restaurant and big rooms with an ensuite bathroom.

We did a few trips to lakes, waterfalls and canyons.

We stayed two nights and then Katrin met people by accident she knew from the beginning of her trip. They invited us to stay with them and go to a Halloween party together. It was kind of my first real Halloween party and even a spontaneous one. We checked out the thrift store and the dollar store to get something which would look like a costume. We started having fun at our host´ place. The party was awesome. We left at the next afternoon after our recovery.

Der Highway 93 auch bekannt als „Icefields Parkway“ führt von Jasper bis nach Lake Louise. Die Straße gilt als eine der schönsten der Welt. Den Namen hat sie, da sie unter anderem an den „Columbia Icefields“ vorbeiführt sowie an etlichen weiteren Gletschern.

Am Dienstag 29. Oktober am Morgen verließ ich mit Kollegin Katrin den schönen Ort Jasper. Ich habe mir ein spezielles GPS (GyPSy) für einen Tag gemietet. Das Gerät erzählt, wo immer man lang fährt, wo man Anhalten sollte und man erfährt viel Wissenswertes über die Gegend. Wir haben die Stimme in Jasper und Lake Louise „George“ genannt und auf dem Highway „Judy“.

Nach mehreren Stopps bei Gletschern und Seen kamen wir nach 230 km am Lake Louise an. Die türkisblaue Farbe des Sees stammt von Steinmehl, das von Gletscherschmelzwasser in den See gespült wird. Lake Louise ist nach Prinzessin Louise Caroline Alberta, einer Tochter von Königin Victoria benannt.

Ein sehr wunderschöner See eingekesselt zwischen Bergen, mit dem richtigem Licht wäre es bestimmt noch traumhafter gewesen. Der Ort an sich ist eher ein Anreihung an Hotels, viel gabs nicht zu sehen. Also gings weiter nach Banff.

Nach weiteren 60 km waren wir dann in Banff. Die Strecke hat uns mit den vielen Stopps und kurzen Wanderungen den ganzen Tag gekostet, es war bereits dunkel. Alles in allen aber eine wirklich traumhafte Straße.

Highway 93 also called as the “Icefields Parkway” is known as one of the most beautiful highways in the world. It is named for features such as the Columbia Icefield, visible from the parkway. There are also many other glaciers and lakes along the road.

On Tuesday morning October 29 I left beautiful Jasper with my coworker Katrin. I rented a special GPS device (GyPSy). It tells you all the interesting facts about the region and shows you nice spots worth stopping. We called the voice in Jasper and Lake Louise “George” and the voice on the highway “Judy”.

Icefields Parkway

After a few stops at lakes and glaciers we arrived in Lake Louise after 230 km. It is called “Lake of the Little Fishes” by the Stoney Natoka First Nations people. The glacial Lake is named after the Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. The emerald color of the water comes from rock flour carried into the lake by melt-water from the glaciers that overlook the lake.

A gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains, with the right light it would be even more dreamlike. The village itself is a set of hotels. Not much to see here so we hit the road again to Banff.

After another 60 km we reached Banff. The route with all the stops and little hikes took us all day so we arrived in the dark. A really fantastic trip.
