Über
die Grenze
Michigan (indian. großer See) ist ein
Bundesstaat der USA. Er ist als Geburtsort der Automobilindustrie bekannt.
Michigan (bestehend aus zwei großen Halbinseln) hat durch die Lage an den
Großen Seen die längste Süßwasserküste eines US-Bundesstaates. Er hat den Beinamen
„Great Lakes State“ (Staat der Großen Seen). Die Hauptstadt ist Lansing in der
Mitte.
Detroit ist die größte Stadt im Südosten. Sie
liegt direkt an der kanadischen Grenze, am Detroit River zwischen dem Lake
St. Clair und dem Eriesee. Detroit hat etwa 680.000 Einwohner.
Das
Einreiseprozedere:
Erst
fährt man durch den Tunnel durch, zahlt eine Mautgebühr von $ 4,50 (€ 3) und
landet dann bei der Einwanderungsbehörde der USA. Der erste war noch
freundlich, ein paar Fragen, wo ich herkomme, wo ich hin will und dann wurde ich
zu einem Parkplatz geschickt, da ich eine Aufenthaltsgenehmigung brauche. Der
zweite Beamte blickte da schon sehr viel böser drein. Es hieß nur „Fenster ganz
öffnen, Schlüssel aufs Amaturenbrett und durch die Tür da“ und das ganze in einem
harschen Befehlston. Der dritte Beamte, war ein ganz lustiger, er begrüßte mich
mit „GUTEN TAG“, und sagte „Isch habe 5 Jahre in Hämbörg und Brämen geläbbt“.
Es war mehr ne nette Unterhaltung, ein paar Fragen, ob das ein Mietwagen ist,
wo ich wohne, wo ich hin will. Aber keine gezielten Fragen, ich habe einfach
von meinen Plänen erzählt. Ein Zettel ausfüllen, Adresse angeben und das wars.
Flugticket und Kontoauszüge wollte der dann aber auch nicht sehen.

Nun
war ich in Detroit, eine amerkanische Großstadt deren Kriminalitätsrate mit die
höchste in den USA ist. Ich wurde gewarnt, wenn jemand an der roten Ampel auf
mich zukommt, einfach weiterzufahren. Als ich aber durch die Innenstadt fuhr,
fühlte mich mich überhaupt nicht unwohl. Ich bin mehrmals im Kreis gefahren auf
der Suche nach dem Touristenzentrum. Im Endeffekt habe ich es nicht gefunden
und bin Richtung Couchsurfer gefahren. Ich wurde von einer WG eingeladen, die
noch ganz neu bei dem Programm sind, also noch keine Referenzen haben. Ich dachte
ich gebe denen eine Chance; habe mir aber auch die Nummer vom Hostel notiert
und auf dem Stadtplan eingekreist. Sicher ist sicher. So gut vorbereitet war
der junge Mann nicht, denn er war noch nicht da und seine Mitbewohner wußten
nicht, dass ich komme. Es ging aber recht schnell dass ich mich wohl gefühlt
habe. Hier habe ich sogar auf einer echten Couch übernachtet.
Ich
habe dann die Tage alle Mitbewohner und mehrere Freunde kennengelernt und mir
wurde ein Stadtrundführungs- und Partyprogramm geboten. Wir sind in die
Innenstadt, wir haben eine Tour in einem alten Gebäude gemacht mit einer erstaunlicherweise
einer großen Touristengruppe. Wir sind am Fluß gewesen, auf der Insel „Belle
Isle“, bei einem Markt und sind durch die Stadt gefahren in unterschiedliche
Nachbarschaften. Wir waren in Bars und Restaurants. Ich bin dann zwei Nächte
geblieben, hat mir so gut gefallen. War nett mal wieder was in einer großen
Gruppe zu unternehmen.
Ich
hatte noch nicht so einen wirklichen Plan wie es weitergeht. Ich habe dann den
Tipp bekommen nach „Grand Rapids“ zu fahren am anderen Ende von Michigan, einfach
Richtung Westen. Ich habe nach couchsurfern geguckt und auch schnell jemanden
gefunden und so hatte ich mein nächstes Ziel.

Immigration procedures:
First you drive through the tunnel and pay a toll of $ 4.50 (€ 3). After that you will be questioned by an officer. I needed
a permit so I was send to a parking lot. The second officer just said to me in
a commanding tone “windows down, key on the dashboard, through that door”. The
third one was really friendly. He greeted me in German and said he used to live
in Hamburg and Bremen for 5 years. It felt more like a nice chit chat rather
than a questioning. He asked me if my car is a rental car, where do I live,
where I wanna go and what are my plans. I just told him about my plans and he
was ok with that. I filled out a form and I had to provide an address and that
was it. He didn´t even wanted to see my flight ticket and my account statements.

Ok, I am in Detroit, an American city which is in the top ranking of the
cities with the highest criminal rates in the USA. I was warned when I am
waiting at the traffic lights and somebody comes to close to my car I should
just drive off. When I drove through downtown I did not feel weird at any time.
I crisscrossed through the city center in search of the tourist center. I
couldn´t find it so I left. I drove towards the house I will stay. That guy is
new to couchsurfing so didn´t had any references. My backup plan was the
hostel, you never know. The young man was not very prepared when I arrived and
he wasn´t there his sister was a bit in panic because she didn´t know I would
come. It didn´t take long and everybody felt comfortable. This time I slept on
an actual couch.
Later I met all the housemates and some friends. They offered me a great
city tour and party program. We visited downtown, did a guided tour in one of
the old buildings, went to the riverfront, to a market, visit the Island “Belle
Isle”, drove around different neighborhoods, ate out in restaurants and drank
in bars. I stayed two nights because I liked it so much. It was nice to be
around a big group again.
I didn´t had a real plan where to go next. I got the tip to go to “Grand
Rapids”. It is to the west on the other side of Michigan. I looked for
couchsurfers and found somebody real quick. Great I had a plan.
