Zurück in England

Nach Wales habe ich mich in die Beatles-Stadt nach Liverpool begeben. Ich hatte vorher noch einen kurzen Bummel in der netten Stadt Chester unterwegs eingelegt. In Liverpool habe ich im YHA Hostel (£ 9,90 / € 12,60) gewohnt. Es war nur okay hatte aber einen gratis Parkplatz und war in Fußweite der Stadt. Ich kam am Mittag an und hatte den halben Tag mir die Stadt anzusehen. Hat aber auch gereicht ich habe so ziemlich alles besichtigt, was ich sehen wollte.

Liverpool

Im Anschluss fuhr ich noch zum „Lake District“. Wie viele Seen es hier gibt ist schwer zu sagen; man findet Angaben von mehreren Hundert bis an die 1000. Oft hörte ich, ich sollte auf jeden Fall diesen Nationalpark nicht missen. Ich bin eher nur einmal durchgefahren, denn die Landschaft war für mich nichts besonders, es war schön hier, aber nichts was ich nicht schon einmal in England oder auch woanders gesehen habe. Ich habe im Hostel „YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe“ (£ 13,00 / € 16,40) in Grasmere gewohnt; ein tolles Hostel in schönster Umgebung. Nächster Halt, Schottland.

After Wales I drove to the Beatles-City Liverpool. On the way I stopped quickly in the nice town of Chester. In Liverpool I stayed at the YHA (£ 9.90 / € 12.60). It is an ok hostel which need a little bit of renovations in the rooms but it has free parking and is located very close to the city center and waterfront. I arrived at lunchtime and started with sightseeing. There were a few spots and museums I was interested in. The afternoon was enough for me to see everything I wanted to.

Liverpool

The next day I drove to the Lake District. How many lakes you will find here is not easy to find out. I have seen numbers of a few hundreds to nearly 1000. A few people told me this National Park is a “must see”. When I drove through it my opinion was that the area is very beautiful but nothing I haven´t seen somewhere else in England or even in other countries. I drove pretty much through it and stayed at the hostel “YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe“ (£ 13,00 / € 16,40) in Grasmere. It is a great hostel in a gorgeous landscape. Next destination – Scotland.

Lake District

Wales

Wales (walisisch: Cymru) ist ein Teil des Vereinigten Königreichs. Die Hauptstadt von Wales ist Cardiff (walisisch: Caerdydd). Das Land wird zu den sechs keltischen Nationen gezählt. Mit 20.779 km² ist Wales der kleinste Landesteil von Großbritannien. Die Küste wird durch Steilküsten und weitauslaufende Strände geprägt. Das Landesinnere zeichnet sich durch das Kambrische Gebirge aus, das sich fast durch ganz Wales zieht.

 

Cardiff Castle

Nach Bristol in England habe ich auch einen Couchsurfer in Cardiff der Hauptstadt gefunden. Ich habe mir die Burg angesehen, ein wenig die Innenstadt und dann mit dem Couchsurfer den Hafen am Abend. Ist ne nette Stadt. Mein nächster Stop war ein Freilichtmuseum. Es ist sehr nett gemacht und zeigt die walisische Geschichte in den letzten hunderten von Jahren. Im Süden liegt der Brecon Beacons National Park. Wunderschöne Landschaft, mir hat´s hier richtig gut gefallen. In der Mitte habe ich in einem netten Hostel (£ 18 / € 23) übernachtet. Am nächsten Tag noch immer im Nationalpark habe ich eine Burgruine besucht und hab dann an der Westküste in Borth in einem netten Hostel übernachtet (£ 15 / € 19).

Auf gings dann zum nächsten Nationalpark, zum Snowdonia im Norden. Dort bin ich ein wenig durch die Gegend gefahren; auch dies ist ein sehr schöner Nationalpark. Ich hatte ein kleines Zimmer für mich alleine im YHA Hostel (£ 18,50 / € 23,50) in Betws-y-Coed direkt gegenüber eines Wasserfalles.

Am folgenden Tag verlies ich Wales und befand mich wieder in England.

Wales (Welsh: Cymru) is a country that is the smallest part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain. The capital is Cardiff. It has a population of about 3,000,000 and has a total area of 20,779 km² (8,023 sq mi). Wales is largely mountainous, with its highest peaks in the north and central areas, including Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), its highest summit.  

Carreg Cunnen Castle

After Bristol in England I left for Wales. First stop was the capital Cardiff where I found a couchsurfer. I checked out the castle and the city center. In the evening I walked around the waterfront with my host. It is a nice city. My next stop was St. Fagans National History Museum, an outdoor museum where they moved old buildings and set up the interior how it looked the last hundreds of years. I have seen a few similar setups in Canada. I really enjoyed it.

The stunning Brecon Beacons National Park is located in the south. I really liked it here. I stayed in a hostel (£ 18 / € 23) somewhere in the middle of the park. The next day I visited a ruined castle and stayed at the west coast in the YHA hostel in Borth (£ 15 / € 19). New day, new day National Park. This following day I went to “Snowdonia”; also a park with a beautiful landscape. I had a small ensuite room for myself in the YHA Hostel (£ 18.50 / € 23.50) in Betws-y-Coed right opposite a waterfall.

After this night I left Wales and came across England again.

England

Nach Brighton fuhr ich weiter entlang der Südküste. Cornwall, der Südosten von England hat mich am meisten interessiert. Meine Erwartungen wurden erfüllt, es ist wunderschön dort. Auf dem Weg dorthin fuhr ich durch den Dartmoor Nationalpark. Die Straßen waren so eng, ich war froh nur so ein winziges Auto zu haben. Ein Highlight war das größte Gewächshaus der Welt das „Eden Project“. Ich habe außerdem Steilklippen gesehen, Karibik-Strände, ein Theater im griechischem Stil, nette Hostels, in den ich meist mein eigenes Zimmer hatte sowie wunderschöne kleine Fischerdörfer. 

Dartmoor National Park

Nach Cornwall habe ich einen Halt in Cheddar gemacht, da wo der Käse herkommt. Es gibt Schluchten und Höhlen zu besichtigen. Mein letzter Stop in England war Bristol, hier habe ich bei einem deutschen Couchsurfer übernachtet. Wir sind essen gegangen, haben ein paar Bars erkundet und er hat mir die Stadt gezeigt. Ist ne nette Stadt. Weiter gings nach Wales.

After Brighton I drove along the south coast. Cornwall the south east of England interested me the most. My expectations were met. It is beautiful and stunning. I stayed one night at Dartmoor National Park; there I realized that driving a tiny car is a big advantage as the roads are sometimes extremely narrow. One highlight was the “Eden Project” the largest greenhouse in the world. I also saw cliffs, Caribbean-like looking beaches, a Greek-style theater, pretty fishermen’s villages and nice hostels. In most of them I even had my own room as it isn´t a very busy time of the year.

Cheddar

After Cornwall I stopped in Cheddar where the famous cheese was invented. There are caves and a gorge which I visited. My last stop in England (at least for now) was the city of Bristol. I stayed with a German couchsurfer who moved to England. He showed me the city in the evening and we went out for dinner and drinks. It is a nice enough city. Next destination: Wales.

Wiedersehen zum dritten Mal

In Brighton macht meine Ex-Kollegin Lauren aus Kanada (wir haben zusammen als Zimmermädchen in den Rocky Mountains gearbeitet) gerade Au-Pair. Sie war ein paar Monate in Italien und ist dann mit der Familie nach England umgezogen. Lauren habe ich bereits in Peterborough in Ontario, Kanada besucht. Nun sehe ich sie zum dritten Mal.

 

Brighton

Wir haben uns die Brighton angesehen. Sie ist noch nicht lange hier, also habe wir ein wenig Tourissachen gemacht. Sie erwähnte, sie möchte während sie hier ist auf jeden Fall nach Stonehenge, also habe ich gesagt „dann laß uns morgen hinfahren“. Und das haben wir auch gemacht. Nur kurze Stopps auf dem Weg und ich war nach 20 Jahren wieder beim Steinkreis. Es liegt etwa 2 Stunden von Brighton. Seit dem letzten Jahr haben sie ein paar Veränderungen gemacht z. B. führte die Hauptstraße recht dicht dran vorbei. In meinen Erinnerungen konnte man Stonhenge nur von weitem sehen, muß wohl kleiner gewesen sein. J

Hinterher sind wir echt English essen gegangen. Es gab Büfett mit drei verschiedenen Braten und allerlei Gemüse. War sehr lecker. Ich hatte zwei sehr nette Tage mit Lauren.

Lauren lives in Brighton. She started doing Au Pair with that family in Italy and then they moved to Brighton recently. Lauren and I used to work together in Canada in the Rocky Mountains. I also visited her in her hometown in Ontario.

Stonehenge

We walked around Brighton and did a bit of touristy stuff as Lauren just moved here and hasn´t seen much yet. She mentioned while she is here she wanna see Stonehenge so I said lets go. The next day we drove to the place I also visited 20 years ago. It is about 2 hours away from Brighton. We did only short stops on the way. They did some changes in the last year like relocating the highway which was very close to it. In my memory you couldn´t get very close to the stone circle but actually it was closer that I thought. I must have been smaller back then. We had a real English carvery meal for lunch and head back after it. These were fun days with Lauren.

Arrival in Great Britain

Großbritannien oder das Vereinigte Königreich

Die Insel Großbritannien hat eine Fläche von etwa 220.000 km².Die Hauptinsel ist die neuntgrößte Insel der Welt. Politisch besteht Großbritannien seit dem Act of Union 1707 aus den Staaten England, Wales und Schottland. Die Länder Großbritanniens bilden zusammen mit der Provinz Nordirland das „Vereinigte Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland“. Großbritannien ist also nur Teil des Vereinigten Königreichs und nicht mit diesem gleichzusetzen. Britain bezeichnet im Englischen hingegen nur Großbritannien und nicht Nordirland. Die Einwohner Nordirlands sind also auch keine Briten.

England ist ein Land im Nordwesten von Europa und der größte und am dichtesten besiedelte Landesteil im „Vereinigten Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland“. Englands Hauptstadt ist London. London ist dies seit dem 12. Jahrhundert, davor war Winchester Hauptstadt. Der höchste Berg in England ist der „Scafell Pike“ in den Cumbrian Mountains mit 978 Metern. Der längste und bekannteste Fluss von England ist die Themse.

 

Dover

Von Island bin ich dann mittags am Flughafen in London Gatwick gelandet. Wollte nur schnell mein Mietwagen abholen und los, das stellte sich aber als Problem da. Doof wie ich bin habe ich wegen der zwei Mietwagen mein Limit der Kreditkarte überzogen (ist nicht das erste Mal, das ich daran nicht gedacht hatte). Hatte am Vortag zwar einen Betrag auf meine Karte geladen, dauerte aber bis zum nächsten Abend bis ich das Geld nutzen konnte. Ich hab dann schnell meine Bank angerufen und gesagt, dass ich ein Problem habe. Die Bank hatte das so gut geregelt, dass ich meine Kreditkarte in 1,5 Stunden benutzen konnte. Immerhin besser als 7 Stunden warten, also ein langen Mittagessen und endlich hatte ich meinen kleinen Fiat 500 bekommen. Ich bin dann direkt nach Canterbury wo ich ein Hostel (Kipps Backpackers £ 14 / € 17,80) gebucht hatte. Es stellte sich raus, obwohl ich seit fünf Jahren nicht mehr links gefahren bin, als kein Problem dar. Abend war ich dann im Hostel. Insgesamt war das Hostel ok, nur die Betten waren so wackelig, das man im oberen das Gefühl hatte, man wäre auf einem Schiff. Im Dunkeln bin ich dann noch kurz in die Stadt um mir ein wenig das Zentrum anzusehen. Die berühmte Kathedrale kostet normalerweise £ 10,50, aber wegen eines Events war es an dem Abend gratis. Es war eine der größten die ich je gesehen hatte. Hat sich also gelohnt.

Am nächsten Tag habe ich dann erstmal einen Stop in Dover eingelegt um die berühmten weißen Kreidefelsen zu sehen. Es war unglaublich stürmisch. Weiter an der Südküste entlang mit einem Stop in Rye. Es ist ein netter kleiner Ort mit Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen und alten Häusern. Weiter gings mit einem Halt in Bexhill-On-Sea, hier war ich vor 20 Jahren auf Klassenreise. Ich habe es wiedererkannt. Auch in Brighton war ich damals. Hier hatte ich mir einen Couchsurfer für 2 Nächte gesucht, eher gesagt in dem Nachbarort Hove.

Bexhill-On-Sea

From Iceland I landed in London Gatwick at lunchtime. I wanted to pick up my booked rental car but that was more difficult than I thought. Stupid me didn´t think about the limit on the credit card. I transferred money the night before but it takes a day. I called my bank and they said it would be on my account in 1.5 hours. Well, better than waiting 7 hours. It wasn´t the first time I wasn´t thinking about this. After a long lunch I finally got my tiny car a Fiat 500.

I drove straight to Canterbury. Although I didn´t drive on the left side for about five years it wasn´t a problem. I arrived in the hostel in the evening which I have booked (Kipps Backpackers £ 14 / € 17.80). The hostel was alright just the beds were awful. On the top bunk it felt like you are in a boat. In the dark I went to the city center. To visit the cathedral cost usually £ 10.50 but there was an event going on so it was free. It is one of the largest I have ever seen. It was worth it.

The next day I drove to Dover to see the famous white cliffs. It was really stormy but nice. I drove further along the south coast with a short stop in the small town Rye. It is a nice town with cobbled stone roads and old buildings. My next stop was Bexhill-On-Sea here I was on a school trip pretty much 20 years ago. I remembered the place pretty well. Hasn´t change much. I also went to Brighton. In Brighton or more precisely in the neighboring town Hove I found a place at a couchsurfer for 2 days.
