Pennsylvania (‚Penns Waldland‘ [lat. silva ‚Wald‘ bzw. Silvanus, eine Waldgottheit), Bundesstaat im Osten der USA. Die Hauptstadt ist Harrisburg.

Erie ist eine Stadt am Eriesee im Nordwesten des US-Bundesstaats Pennsylvania mit etwa 102.000 Einwohnern. Erie ist nach Philadelphia, Pittsburgh und Allentown die viertgrößte Stadt Pennsylvanias.

Von dem recht großen Bundesstaat grenzen nur etwa 82 km von Pennsylvania an den Eriesee. Ungefähr in der Mitte dieser Strecke liegt der Ort Erie. Hier habe ich wieder eine Couchsurferin gefunden. Ich bin zwei Tage geblieben. Wir sind am Abend Essen gegangen und ein wenig durch den Ort gefahren und gelaufen. War sogar gerade ein Konzert in der Innenstadt, seltsamerweise durfte man da auf der Straße trinken, was sonst hier nirgendwo erlaubt ist. Am nächsten Tag habe ich dann einen Strandtag eingelebt. Direkt vor Erie liegt die Insel „Presque Isle“, die aber mit dem Festland verbunden ist. Es ist ein Naturschutzgebiet mit mehreren Stränden. Hier habe ich mich ans Wasser gelegt und meinen neuen Ost-USA Reiseführer studiert und natürlich war ich auch schwimmen.

Am frühen Abend sind wir etwa eine halbe Stunde ins Landesinnere gefahren zu einer Scheune, die als Bar mit LIVE-Musik umfunktioniert wurde. Hier hat meine Couchsurferin ein paar Freunde getroffen und wir sind danach auch noch weiter in eine andere nette Bar direkt an einem See. Ich hatte zwei nette Tage, habe auch ein tolles Frühstück bekommen. Auf gings in den nächsten Bundesstaat.

Erie at night

Pennsylvania is a U.S. state that is located in the Great Lakes region. The state's four most populous cities are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, and Erie. The state capital is Harrisburg. Pennsylvania has 51 miles (82 km) of coastline along Lake Erie and 57 miles (92 km) of shoreline. The state is one of the 13 original founding states of the United States.

Erie is a city located in northwestern Pennsylvania. Named for the lake and the Native American tribe that resided along its southern shore, Erie has a population of 102,000.

Presque Isle

Erie is located in the middle of Pennsylvania at Lake Erie. I stayed again with a couchsurfer for two days. She showed me the town and surroundings. In the center a concert took place. I was surprised that in this situation it was allowed to drink alcohol on the street. It was an exception but still. The next day I made it a beach day. Right on the coast of Erie there is “Presque Isle State Park”. The Island is actually connected to the mainland. There are many beaches and at one of them I lay down at the water and was reading my new Eastern USA Lonely Planet. Of course I also went swimming. In the early evening we drove about 30 minutes inland to a barn which was changed to a bar with live music. My couchsurfer met some friends and after that we went to another bar right on a lake. I spent two nice days here. I even got an awesome breakfast. After that off to the next state.

Ohio

Ohio ist ein Bundesstaat im Nordosten der USA. Im Norden wird er vom Eriesee, der die Grenze zum Nachbarland Kanada bildet, und im Süden vom Ohio-Fluss begrenzt. Der Name Ohio kommt aus der Sprache der Irokesen und bedeutet „Schöner Fluss“. Die Hauptstadt Ohios ist Columbus; weitere Großstädte sind Cleveland, Cincinnati und Toledo. Der Beiname Ohios ist „Buckeye State“ (Buckeye tree = Ohio-Rosskastanie).

Toledo ist eine Stadt im Nordwesten des US-Bundesstaates Ohio mit knapp 300.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt südwestlich des Eriesees. Toledo entstand, wie viele Städte der USA, durch den Bau einer Eisenbahn.

Ich wollte entlang des Eriesees fahren und da lag Toledo so ganz harmlos in der Mitte. Klingt nach einem netten Ort. Ich habe couchsurfing für nur eine Nacht gemacht. Ich kam abends an, mein Hausherr hat lange gearbeitet und mußte früh raus, war also nicht mehr als ein wenig unterhalten. Ich habe auch noch lecker Sri Lankan Essen bekommen, was er gekocht hatte.

Am nächsten Morgen habe ich versucht, die Betonung liegt auf versucht, ein Info Center oder Kaufhaus, sowie Geldautomat und Tankstelle zu finden. Ich wollte mir auch noch das Flußufer ansehen. Jaja, Pustekuchen. Nix war zu finden, es war früh, aber so früh nun auch wieder nicht, gähnende Leere, häßliche Gebäude und es dauerte ewig bis ich einen funktionierenden Bankautomaten gefunden hatten. Einen Landkarte von Bundesstaat und Stadtplan habe ich immernoch nicht. Zum Glück funktionierte mein GPS ganz ordentlich. Nach ewigem Rumkurven wollte ich nur raus und weiter. Definitiv eine Stadt, die man links leigen lassen kann.

Cleveland

Später kam ich dann nach Cleveland (etwa 390.000 Einwohner). Wegen des Rumkurven in Toledo kam ich etwas spät zum Deutschland-Spiel. Nachdem ich endlich einen Parkplatz hatte und eine Bar gefunden hatte war bereits die zweite Halbzeit angefangen. Ich kam gerade richtig, als wir das erste Tor geschossen haben und die amerikanischen Fans in hoher Aufruhr waren. Ich habe mich dann mal inkognito mit was zu Essen und zu Trinken in eine Ecke gesetzt und das Spiel ganz leise verfolgt und nur innerlich Emotionen gezeigt. Mit einem neutralem Gesicht und happy über den Sieg im Inneren verließ ich die Sports-Bar. Ich hatte mich im Vorwege nicht über Cleveland informiert, hatte ja kein Info Center gefunden. Habe aber gehört dort gibt es die „Rock ´n´ Roll Hall of Fame“ (Ruhmeshalle). Klingt gut, dachte ich, also angucken.

Im großen und ganzen war ich überrascht von Cleveland, mir hat es hier gefallen. Die Stadt war im Zentrum überraschenderweise recht sauber und es gibt interessante alte Gebäude. Obwohl wie Detroit Cleveland in den Top Ten der gefährlichsten Städte ist, hab ich davon nichts mitbekommen.

Nach ein paar Stunden Aufenthalt in der Stadt bin ich weiter gen Pennsylvannia, aber nicht über den Highway, sondern quer durch die Stadt.

Toledo is the fourth most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio with a population of about 300,000. Toledo is in northwest Ohio, on the western end of Lake Erie, and borders the State of Michigan. Toledo grew quickly as a result of the Miami and Erie Canal and its position on the railway line between New York and Chicago. It has since become a city well known for its industry, particularly in glass and auto assembly.

I wanted to drive along Lake Erie and Toledo was kinda there. Sounds like a nice city. I did couchsurfing for one night. My host worked very long and had to get up very early. So we did not have more time than a chat. I tried his self-made Ski-Lankan food, great but very spicy.

The next day I tried to find a visitor center. I just tried, similar with an ATM machine and a gas station. I also wanted to see the riverfront. Not all wishes came true. It took me a while but at the end I had at least money to fill up my tank. Still I don´t have any maps to find my way. Luckily my GPS map worked for Ohio. There was nothing to find here. The city was empty and ugly. It was early but not that early. I can tell you now you need a good reason to come to Toledo.

Later I arrived in Cleveland (population 390,000). Because of all the driving around in Toledo I came a bit too late to see the soccer World Cup Germany vs. USA. After I found a parking lot and a bar the second half had already started. I just came to the right moment when we shoot the first goal. The Americans were not very happy so I was sitting very quietly in a corner and eating my lunch. With a neutral face and a happy inside (we won) I left the sports bar. I didn´t know much about Cleveland but I heard here is the “Rock ´n´ Roll Hall of Fame”. Sounds great, I thought, so I checked it out. I was surprised of Cleveland. I like it. It is fairly clean in downtown and has nice old buildings. It is like Detroit in the Top Ten of the most dangerous US cities but I didn´t had any bad feelings at all.

After a few hours in the city I left towards Pennsylvania but not on the highway through the city.

Chicago

llinois ist ein US-amerikanischer Bundesstaat. Er liegt im mittleren Westen und grenzt im Nordosten an den Michigansee. Der Name kommt aus der Algonkin-Sprache und bezeichnet den Indianerstamm der Illiniwek oder Illini, der damals das Land bewohnte und dessen Name Das Volk bedeutet. Die Hauptstadt ist Springfield.

Die einzige Millionenstadt in Illinois ist Chicago. Der offizielle Beiname Illinois ist „Land of Lincoln“ – Lincolns Land. Der spätere 16. US-Präsident Abraham Lincoln zog 1830 als 21-Jähriger nach Illinois.

Chicago ist eine Stadt am Südwestufer des Michigansees im Bundesstaat Illinois. Mit einer Einwohnerzahl von etwa 2,7 Mio. ist sie die drittgrößte Stadt der USA.

Ich hatte eigentlich nicht vor nach Chicago zu fahren, hatte mich nicht sooo interessiert, als ich aber dann nur 140 km entfernt in Indiana bei meinen entfernten Verwandten war, wäre es eine Schande nicht wenigstens mal kurz vorbeizufahren. Udo, mein Cousin zweiten Grades, war schon länger nicht mehr da, also sind wir zusammen hingefahren. Der übliche Stau in einer Großstadt durfte nicht fehlen. Wir sind am See entlang gefahren, was eine nette Strecke ist. Kurz am Pier vorbei, aber wegen der horenden Parkgebühr von $ 25 (€ 18) für egal wie lange, sind wir nicht angehalten. Das einzige, was ich wirklich sehen wollte, war Chicago von oben und das geht am besten vom Willis Tower (besser bekannt unter dem früheren Namen „Sears Tower“). Wie ich bereits gehört hatte, war der Tower besser als der CN Tower in Toronto, man sieht besser, nicht durch Maschendraht und es ist ungefähr halb so teuer. Die Stadt gefällt mir; ich mag solche Städte, die am Wasser liegen und die eine Mischung aus Wolkenkratzern und alten Gebäuden haben. Wir waren nur ein paar Stunden da, aber ich war zufrieden damit.

I wasn´t really interested to visit Chicago in the first place. When I ended up staying with my distant relatives in Northern Indiana just 87 miles (140 km) away I thought it would be a shame not to check it out. Udo, my second grade cousin had not been there for quite a while so we went together just for a day. We ended up in the usual traffic jams of a big city. We drove along the shoreline which is beautiful. We had a quick look at Navy Pier but left because of the ridiculous parking fee of $ 25 (€ 18) for the whole day or just a minute. The only thing I really wanted to do was get up the Willis Tower (or better known for its former name “Sears Tower”). I already heard it is supposed to be nicer than the CN Tower in Toronto. It was, the view was better, not through chicken fence and it was about half price. I lik the city especially because it is located on the waterfront and has a mix of old and new buildings. We only spent a few hours there but I was happy with that.
