Niagara Falls, USA

Man bekommt dafür schicke, blaue Einmal-Regenponchos.

Niagara Falls is a city in New York, United States. The city has a population of about 50,000. It is across the Niagara River from the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, with both cities named after the famed Niagara Falls which they share.

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie mostly on the Canadian side and the American Falls entirely on the American side, separated by Goat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also located on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls by Luna Island. The international boundary line was originally drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819, but the boundary has long been in dispute due to natural erosion and construction. Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with a vertical drop of more than 165 feet (50 m). Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America. The falls are located 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Buffalo, New York and 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Toronto. Niagara Falls were formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age), and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean. While not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls are very wide. More than six million cubic feet (168,000 m3) of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost four million cubic feet (110,000 m3) on average.
Bridal Veil Falls
At the end I spent half the day at the Falls with that Chinese girl I met at the hostel. We started with the famous boat trip “Maid of the Mist”. You get the fancy blue thin disposable rain coats. It is really windy on the boat near the falls and you get the feeling you are having a shower. After the boat trip you can walk quite close to the waterfalls and again it feels like a downpour.

The US site of the falls are a State Park. The town „Niagara Falls“ itself has all the usual souvenir shops but right at the falls it is very green. There is an observation platform and you can also to a walking tour even closer to the falls. I didn´t do it because I wanted to do one of those tours on the Canadian site.
There are several small islands which are connected via a bridge. We bought a ticket for the hop on/hop off trolley ($ 2) and checked those islands out. In the afternoon I wanted to be at the hostel in Canada right on time for the soccer World Cup Germany vs. Algeria. I would say spend half a day here and you see everything important. So I drove over the Rainbow Bridge which is the border to Canada. It was pretty easy. The only question I thought was weird “Did you talked to immigration that you are able to come back to Canada?” – The answer was “yes” because I went in Windsor to immigration to ask about it.

New York State

New York ist ein Bundesstaat im Nordosten der USA .Gemeinsam mit New Jersey und Pennsylvania wird New York den Mittelatlantikstaaten zugerechnet. New York hat den offiziellen Beinamen Empire State (Imperiums-Staat).

New York is a state in the Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The state of New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, its largest city. The nickname is “The Empire State” and the capital is Albany. North of the city the region is known as Upstate New York.

Buffalo is the second most populous city in the state of New York, after New York City. It is located in Western New York on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River. Buffalo has a population of about 261,000.

When I arrived in New York I felt a bit like arriving in Ontario back then. It was green everywhere; I drove through densely forests and it became hillier and hillier. I tried to drive along the lake. By accident I found "Bennett Beach" a gorgeous sand beach with sand dunes. It is only open on the weekend. I had to jump in. My destination was Buffalo. The city is about 30 minutes from the Niagara Falls. I stayed two nights in a hostel. It is the only hostel in town but a very nice one too. I really liked it there. I explored the town by foot and even drove to further neighborhoods. Buffalo is a nice place with the typical nice old buildings like Detroit. It is also another one of the Top Ten US cities with one of the highest criminal rate. I saw some dodgy people I wouldn´t want to interfere with but if you leave them alone they will leave you alone.
The second day there was a Chinese girl in my room. She studied in the US and wanted to see Niagara Falls too so I invited her to drop her off there. We actually spent half the day together exploring. The next morning we left together.

Pennsylvannia

Pennsylvania (‚Penns Waldland‘ [lat. silva ‚Wald‘ bzw.

Beach at Presque Isle

Erie at night
Pennsylvania is a U.S. state that is located in the Great Lakes region. The state's four most populous cities are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, and Erie. The state capital is Harrisburg. Pennsylvania has 51 miles (82 km) of coastline along Lake Erie and 57 miles (92 km) of shoreline. The state is one of the 13 original founding states of the United States.

Erie is a city located in northwestern Pennsylvania. Named for the lake and the Native American tribe that resided along its southern shore, Erie has a population of 102,000.

Presque Isle
Erie is located in the middle of Pennsylvania at Lake Erie. I stayed again with a couchsurfer for two days. She showed me the town and surroundings. In the center a concert took place. I was surprised that in this situation it was allowed to drink alcohol on the street. It was an exception but still. The next day I made it a beach day. Right on the coast of Erie there is “Presque Isle State Park”. The Island is actually connected to the mainland. There are many beaches and at one of them I lay down at the water and was reading my new Eastern USA Lonely Planet. Of course I also went swimming. In the early evening we drove about 30 minutes inland to a barn which was changed to a bar with live music. My couchsurfer met some friends and after that we went to another bar right on a lake. I spent two nice days here. I even got an awesome breakfast. After that off to the next state.
