Merry Christmas!!!

Kurz vor Weihnachten war ich dann wieder in Edmonton. Ein paar Sachen einkaufen, die ich für meinen nächsten Campjob brauche, ein nettes Abendessen bei Bekannten an Weihnachten, Couchsurfing-Treffen und nachdem ich nur 6 Tage in Edmonton war, ging es auch schon wieder ins nächste Camp.

Free time

Just before Christmas I was back in Edmonton. I bought a few things I ran out and which I needed for my time in the camp. We had a nice dinner at Christmas and we went to the couchsurfing meeting. I was only 6 days in Edmonton before I was heading back to the next camp.

Arbeiten im Öl-Camp

In meiner neuen Firma angekommen habe ich meine Uniform bekommen, Vertrag unterschrieben und los gings. Ich bin mit der „Field Supervisorin“ die Regionalleiterin gefahren. Das Camp liegt etwa 20 Minuten von einem kleinerem Highway mitten im Nirgendwo etwa 20 Autominuten von dem Ort „Fox Creek“. Von Edmonton etwa 2,5 Stunden nordwestlich. Dort wurde ein temporäres Camp errichtet, welches aus 6 zusammenhängenden Trailern besteht.

Das Catering-Team besteht aus der Köchin, einem Camp Attendant und mir. In dem Camp wohnen 12 Arbeiter, jeweils 6, die Tagschicht haben und 6 für die Nachtschicht. Immer zwei Arbeiter wohnen in einem Zimmer, jeweils einer von der Nacht- und einer von der Tagschicht, so daß niemals beide zugleich in einem Zimmer sind. Es gibt ein Gemeinschaftbad für alle Männer und eine kleines für uns zwei Frauen, sowie eine Küche, ein Eßzimmer, ein Fernsehraum und Lagerräume. Ich habe ein eigenes Zimmer mit zwei Betten.

Ich stehe um kurz vor 5:30 h auf und schleppe mich im Pyjama in die Küche, mache Kaffee an, stelle das Buffet raus, mache eine Lunchbox fertig und dann ziehe ich mich erstmal an und frühstücke. Ich mache dann Salate, Gemüse- und Obstplatten fertig (16 insgesamt, für Mittagessen und Abendessen), ich packe Lunchboxen für die Arbeiter die am Ölcamp wohnen, das sind Bohrarbeiter, ein Geologe, hauptsächlich, die die am Computer sitzen und ich helfe bei den Vorbereitungen für Mittag und Abendessen, wie z. B. Gemüse schneiden etc..

Zum Mittag kommen nur wenige, daher packen wir das Essen ein und der/die Sanitäter/in kommt vorbei und holt das Essen ab.

Zwischen 13:30 und 14:00 h bin ich dann soweit fertig und habe dann Pause bis 16:30 h. Meist schlafe ich ein Stündchen, nachdem ich Facebook und meine Emails gecheckt habe oder wasche eventuell. Wenn ich das Schläfchen nicht schaffe, mache ich dann wenigstens ein Powernap von 5 bis 20 Minuten. Ich schlafe meist recht schnell ein, da ich nach den 8 Stunden doch recht müde bin.

Am Nachmittag habe ich dann die Vorbereitungen fürs Abendessen gemacht, die Essen für die Arbeiter wurden eingepackt, (deren Mittagessen bzw. dann Mitternachtsessen) und am Ende alles abgewaschen, weggeräumt und aufgefüllt. Um etwa 20:30 h war ich dann fertig. Noch schnell ein paar Emails schreiben, Facebook checken und das war auch schon der Tag. So oder so ähnlich ging es dann jeden Tag bis das Camp nach 17 Tagen zugemacht hat und ich wieder zurück nach Edmonton bin.

Working at an oil rig camp

When I arrived at my new company I got my uniform, signed the contact and I left. The field supervisor took me over there. The camp is located about 20 minutes off a secondary highway in the middle of nowhere and about 20 minutes from the town “Fox Creek”. It took us about 2.5 hours to get there. There a temporary camp was set up. It is built with 6 connected trailers. The team from our catering company consisting of one cook, one camp attendant and me the second cook. 12 clients (the oil workers) stay there, 6 on day shift and 6 on night shift. Two clients share one room but never are in the same room at the same time because of the different shifts. There is one common bathroom for the guys and a little one for the female cook and me. There is one kitchen, a dining room, a TV room and storage rooms. I have my own room.

I get up just before 5.30 am and go in the kitchen, still in my pajamas, turn on the coffee, place the buffet on the counter, prepare the lunchbox and then it is time to get dressed. During the day I make salads, vegie and fruit platters (16 in totals for lunch and supper), pack the lunchbox for the workers who stay at the rig like drillers, a geologist and mostly the guys who sitting in front of a computer and I help to prepare food for lunch and supper like chopping or peeling vegies and more.

Only a few come for lunch so we pack the food and the medic will come and pick it up.

Between 1.30 and 2 pm I am done with all that stuff and I have a break until 4.30 pm. I try to sleep or at least have a powernap. There is just enough time to check mails and Facebook and do my laundry.

In the afternoon I do preparation for the dinner and pack food for the workers. All day there is a lot of dishes to do and especially at the end. Putting away everything, tidy up and stocking up. This is a typical day of work. About 8.30 pm I am finish and I quickly check my emails and Facebook, have a shower and it is time for bed.

This is about how the days goes by until after 17 days the camp closed down and I went back to Edmonton.

New Job

Auf Jobsuche

Nachdem meine Bewerbungen in Saskatchewans (die nächste Provinz) kleinen Skigebieten nicht gefruchtet haben, hatte die Gonca (auch eine Couchsurferin aus Deutschland) die Idee sich bei den Caterern der Arbeiter-Camps zu bewerben. Die haben Jobs als Zimmermädchen, Küchenhilfe, Putzhilfe oder Mädchen für alles. Also haben wir fleißig Bewerbungen geschrieben und die auch persönlich abgegeben. Nach über ne Woche haben wir dann die Hoffnung fast aufgegeben als dann doch der Anruf für ein Vorstellungsgespräch kam. Ich habe mich gleich als alles beworben, damit die Chancen größer sind, habe ja auch Erfahrungen in allen Gebieten. Zuerst mußten wir einen Alkohol/Drogen und Fitnesstest über uns ergehen lassen. War wie ein Tag im Fitnessstudio; wir hatten beide danach höllisch Muskelkater. Es war viel 10 Kilo-Kisten heben, absetzen, laufen, absetzen usw.. Alles super, wir haben den Test bestanden; am selben Tag haben wir noch den Termin für einen Einführungstag bekommen. Dort muß man einen Test machen, der nennt sich „WHMIS“(Steht für: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System und ist eine Kanadische Behörde zur Klassifizierung von Gefahrgut. Die Kernelemente des Systems sind warnende Kennzeichnung von Behältern, die Bereitstellung von Sicherheitsdatenblättern und Ausbildungsprogrammen.) Man schaut auch einen Film, wie das so in einem Camp aussieht, wie die Unterkünfte gebaut werden sowie wird sehr viel über Sicherheit und Regeln am Arbeitsplatz berichtet. Das ging den ganzen Tag und am Ende hat man eine ganze Hand voll Papiere mitbekommen. Wenn man den Test bestanden hat ist man sozusagen eingestellt und man wartet nun auf einen Anruf wann es wohin los geht.

 

Camp

Einen Tag später habe ich auch schon den Anruf bekommen, es gäbe einen Job für mich als „Cook´s helper“, also Küchenhilfe in einem kleinem Camp nur etwa 3 Stunden von Edmonton entfernt und ich solle am nächsten Morgen um 8 Uhr in der Firma sein. Also hieß es noch schnell eine Hose kaufen und Sachen packen.

Meine französisch-kanadsiche Mitbewohnerin (couchsurferin) hat mich freundlicherweise hingefahren. Am 5. Dezember war also mein erster Arbeitstag.

Looking for work

After working in Jasper I thought I would travel a bit but somehow it doesn´t always work out as planned. Every traveler in the house was writing job applications so I did so too. I wrote some job application for jobs in the ski areas in Saskatchewan (the next province). I never heard anything back. Gonca (another couchsurfer from Germany) had the idea to work for the catering services for workers camps. There you can work as kitchen hand, cleaning attendant, housekeeper or general helper. So we wrote many applications and drove to the company to drop off our resumes. After about a week with no answer we almost gave up but then I got a call for an interview. I applied for different jobs so the chances are bigger. I have experiences in all this sectors anyway.

First I had to pass a drug / alcohol and fitness test. It was like a day in the gym. We had really bad muscle ache after it. Mostly we had to lift up and down 10 kilo boxes. Everything was fine we passed the test so we got an appointment for the orientation day where they tell you everything you need to know for this job like safety procedures and regulations. We saw a movie how a camp looks like and how it is built. You also have to pass the WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System ) test. This is mostly about the labeling of controlled products. It took a whole day and at the end we got a load of paperwork. If you passed the test you basically hired. After that you just wait for a call to go to your first assignment.

 

Cooking

One day later I got the call in the afternoon for a job as a cook´s helper / second cook in a small camp just 3 hours away from Edmonton. I had to be at the office at 8 am. I drove quickly to a shop to buy a pair of pants and some other stuff.

Luckily my French-Canadian housemate also couchsurfer dropped me off at work. My first day of work was on Thursday 5 December.

Edmonton

Edmonton ist die Hauptstadt der kanadischen Provinz Alberta. Sie hat um die 812.000 Einwohner. Damit ist Edmonton die zweitgrößte Stadt der Provinz und die fünftgrößte in Kanada. Mit 683 km² Gesamtfläche ist sie eine der flächengrößten Städte Nordamerikas, hat damit aber auch eine der niedrigsten Bevölkerungsdichten.
Benannt war sie nach dem Ort Edmonton östlich von London, der Heimat des HBC (Hudson Bay Company)-Vizegouverneurs Sir James Winter Lake.
Die „West Edmonton Mall“ (Mall = Einkaufszentrum) war mehr als zwanzig Jahre lang das größte Einkaufszentrum der Welt. Heute ist es immernoch das größte Einkaufszentrum in Nordamerika.

 

Strathcona

Im Motel in Lacombe habe ich nachts spontan eine couchsurfing Anfrage geschickt und nur 10 Minuten später gleich eine Antwort von Michael aus Edmonton bekommen. Als wir ankamen war noch ein weiterer Couchsurfer da, Michael kam erst abends. Katrin und ich hatten ein Zimmer für uns. Mir hat es gleich in seinem Haus gefallen. Wir wohnen in Strathcona südlich von Downtown. In den ersten Tagen haben wir uns die Innenstadt angesehen sowie eine geführte Tour im „Alberta Legislature Building“ (Parlamentsgebäude) gemacht. Wir sind natürlich auch in die West Edmonton Mall und sind da mit der größten Loopingbahn gefahren. Ansonsten ist Katrin nach etwa einer Woche zurück um einen Job in Lake Louise zu starten und ich bin geblieben, da Michael auch nichts dagegen hat, das ich länger bleibe. Man nennt uns auch das Haus der Deutschen, da für eine Woche hier 5 Deutsche im Haus waren, später immerhin noch drei.

Einmal wöchentlich gehen wir zum Couchsurfing-Treffen, waren mal essen und in Bars, kochen zusammen, machen das Haus sauber, ich habe mir Winterreifen gekauft, ich habe Bewerbungen geschrieben und wir gehen einkaufen. So in etwa läuft es nun für über 3 Wochen.

The name of the new fort was suggested by John Peter Pruden after Edmonton, London, the home town of both the HBC (Hudson's Bay Company) deputy governor Sir James Winter Lake, and Pruden.

Skyline

At the motel in Lacombe I started to write couchsurfing requests when I got an answer from Michael in Edmonton after about 10 minutes. When we arrived there was another couchsurfer and Michael came later this evening. Katrin and I got our own room. I liked this place immediately. We are staying in Strathcona south of downtown. In the first day we checked out downtown did a bit of shopping and a guided tour in the Alberta Legislature Building. Of course we went to West Edmonton Mall and did a ride in the extreme rollercoaster. Other than that Katrin left after a week to begin her new job in Lake Louise. Michael invited me to stay so I stayed.

You could call us „the house of the Germans”. There were five of us, later still three.

Once a week we are going to the couchsurfing meeting, we went out to bars and for dinner, we cooked together, we cleaned the house, went for grocery shopping, I bought winter tires and wrote job applications. This is what I have done in the past three weeks.
