North Pole

North Pole (Nordpol) ist eine kleine Stadt mit etwa 2000 Einwohnern 14 Meilen (22 km) südöstlich von Fairbanks. Der Ort liegt 1,700 Meilen (2.700 km) vom geografischen Nordpol entfernt.

Die größte Attraktion ist das Santa Claus-Haus, ein riesiges Souvenirgeschäft, in dem man das ganze Jahr Weihnachsartikel kaufen kann.

Jedes Jahr erreicht das Postamt hunderttausende Briefe für den Weihnachstmann.

Der Ort wurde einst umbenannt, um ihn für Firmen und Touristen interessant zu machen, was auch sehr gut funktioniert hat.

North Pole

Um ein wenig Abwechslung von Fairbanks zu bekommen habe ich dann Couchsurfing in North Pole gemacht. Schon bevor ich nach Fairbanks kam, hatte ich mich nach Couchsurfern umgeguckt. Ich hatte auch einen gefunden, der war aber noch unterwegs und war erst ein paar Tage später zurück. Ich wollte eh hin, um mir das Santa Claus-Haus anzusehen, gleichzeitig spare ich noch Geld, also habe ich mich dann für 2 Nächte in North Pole (eigentlich eher in der Mitte der beiden Orte) einquartiert. Der Ort war schnell erkundet, ein wenig durch den Ort laufen, natürlich mit geocaching und ausgiebig Weihnachtsartikel anschauen, das wars auch schon für den Tag. Im Haus habe ich mit den zwei Jungs unterhalten und Fern gesehen, also mal so richtig schön nix tun.

Ich bin dann wieder zurück nach Fairbanks. Ich hatte im Internet eine Mitfahrgelegenheit nach Kanada zwei Tage später gefunden.

North Pole

North Pole is a small town 14 miles (22 km) southeast of Fairbanks and has a population of about 2,000 people. Despite the name, the city is about 1,700 miles (2,700 km) south of Earth's geographic North Pole.

Santa Claus House

Its biggest attraction is a gift shop named Santa Claus House, the modern-day incarnation of a trading post established in the town's early days. Prior to Christmas each year, the post office in North Pole receives hundreds of thousands of letters to Santa Claus. The town was re-named to attract businesses and tourists which worked out well.
For changing the scenery of Fairbanks I did couchsurfing in North Pole. Before I arrived in Fairbanks I already wrote this guy he just was away and won´t come back for a few days. I wanted to visit North Pole anyway to visit the Santa Claus House. At the same time I will save money. I stayed two days in North Pole (it was actually more like half way between the two towns).

The Town was pretty quick explored. There was not even a real center of town. I just walked around, did of course some geocaching and had a look at all the Christmas goods. That was pretty much it for the day. At the house I talked to the two guys and we watched a lot of TV which was nice and really relaxing too.
After the two nights I went back to Fairbanks. I found somebody in the internet who will give me a ride to Canada in two days.

Tour to the Arctic Circle

Tour zum Nördlichen Polarkreis

Polarkreise nennt man die auf 66° 33′ 44″ (= 66,56°) nördlicher (arktischer Polarkreis) sowie südlicher (antarktischer Polarkreis) Breite gelegenen Breitenkreise.

Am Polarkreis geht die Sonne am Tag der Sommersonnenwende nicht unter. Diese Erscheinung, die Mitternachtssonne genannt wird, fällt auf der Nordhalbkugel meist auf den 21. Juni und auf der Südhalbkugel auf den 21. oder 22. Dezember.

Ich dachte mir, wenn ich schon mal soweit im Norden bin, dann will ich auch noch weiter. Es ist zwar möglich eine Tour ganz bis zum Arktischen Ozean zu machen, aber die war für mich unbezahlbar. Immer noch nicht ganz günstig ($185 / € 138), aber dann kann ich wenigstens sagen „ich war da, am nördlichen Polarkreis“.

Die Tour hat etwa 13 Stunden gedauert; normal sind etwa 15, aber wir waren nur zu dritt. Mit nem Kleinbus und einem brasilianischem Geschwisterpaar ging es morgens um 7:30 h los. Ich wußte bereits vorher, dass es unterwegs nicht unendlich viel interessantes zu sehen gibt, und versucht wird mit einigen Stops doch einiges zu zeigen. Ich fuhr also mit wenigen Erwartungen los.

Von Fairbanks zum Polarkreis sind es knapp 200 Meilen (320 km) und nur etwa die Hälfte ist asphaltiert.

Wir stoppten bei der Trans-Alaska-Pipline, haben einen Frühstücksstop eingelegt, am Yukon Fluß angehalten, sind bei interessanten Steinformationen entlangspaziert, haben etliche Fotos am Polarkreis gemacht, haben auf dem Rückweg zu Mittag gegessen und einen letzten Stop in einem kleinem Laden gemacht.

Während der Fahrt hat uns der Fahrer eine Menge Wissenswertes erzählt. Ich fand die Tour gelungen.

Arctic Circle

It is the parallel of latitude that runs 66° 33′ 44″ (or 66.5622°) north of the Equator.

The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun can remain continuously above or below the horizon for 24 hours (at the June solstice and December solstice respectively).

I thought I am so far north I should go a bit further. It is possible to do a tour to the Arctic Ocean but this was unaffordable for me. The tour to the Arctic Circle was not exactly cheap ($185 / € 138) either but then I could say „I was at the Arctic Circle“.

The tour took about 13 hours. It might take up to 15 hours but we were only 3 people. In a van with a Brazilian brother and sister we took off at 7:30 am. I knew that there wouldn´t be much to see and they try to find some things worth stopping on the way so I didn´t expect a lot from this trip. It is almost 200 miles (320 km) from Fairbank to the Arctic Circle. About half of the road is sealed.

We checked out the Trans-Alaska-Pipeline, had a breakfast stop, pulled in at the “Mighty” Yukon River, walked around in a place with interesting rock formations, took a lot of pictures at the Arctic Circle, ate lunch on our way back and stopped at a little store.

During the tour I learned heaps of interesting facts from the driver. I thought the tour was worth it.

Die Trans-Alaska-Pipeline ist 1287 km lang und verläuft von Prudhoe Bay an der Nordküste bis nach Valdez and der Südküste. --- The Trans-Alaska-Pipeline is 800 miles (1287 km) lomg and starts in Prudhoe Bay at the north coast and end in Valdez at the south coast.

Was hab ich so in Fairbanks gemacht?

Naja, um ganz ehrlich zu sein, nicht besonders viel.

• War viel im Hostel
• Hab mit Gästen und Besitzer geschnackt
• Hab Papierkram sortiert und eingeklebt
• Hab Paket verschickt
• Hab Blog geschrieben
• Bilder hochgeladen
• Bin durch die Stadt gelaufen
• Bin mit dem Fahrrad ins Museum auf dem Universitätsgelände gefahren, war ne ganze Tagestour
• Bin mit dem Fahrad zu „Creamer´s Field“, um ein wenig wandern zu gehen, war ne halbe Tagestour
• War im „Pioneer Park“, ein Freizeitpark, der wie aus dem Wilden Westen aussieht
• Hab geocaching gemacht
• Bin mit Gästen nachts durch die Wälder im Jeep gefahren
• Hab versucht das Nordlicht oder Meteoritenschauer zu sehen, kein Glück
• Hab eine Bustour in den Norden gemacht
• Hab zwei Nächte im Nachbarort couchsurfing gemacht

....und das war es auch so ziemlich in den 10 Tagen.

What exciting things did I do in Fairbanks?

• I spent a lot of time in the hostel
• Talked to other guests and the owner a lot
• Sorted out my flyers and glued it in a book
• Sent a package home
• Wrote my blog
• Uploaded pictures
• Walked around downtown
• Went by bike to the museum at the university. Took me the whole day.
• Went by bike to “Creamer´s Field” for a bit of walking. Took me half a day.
• Went to the Pioneer park a goldrush theme park
• Did geocaching
• Did a night tour through the forest with other guests and their 4x4 car
• Tried to see the northern light and the meteor showers, no luck
• Did a bus tour up north
• Did two nights of couchsurfing in the next town

...and that was pretty much it.

Alaska Railroad

"Es fährt ein Zug nach Nirgendwo"

Die Alaska Railroad (ARR) ist eine US-amerikanische Eisenbahngesellschaft, die von Seward im Süden Alaskas über Anchorage und Denali Nationalpark nach Fairbanks führt und eine Länge von 760 Kilometern umfasst.

Die günstigste und schnellste Möglichkeit von Denali nach Fairbanks ist zwar der Bus, aber schöner legt man die 122 Meilen (196 km) mit der Bahn zurück. Der Zug kostet $ 66 (€ 50) und es dauert 4 Stunden.

Village

Es gibt bequeme Sitze, ein Bistro, ein Restaurant, einen gläsernen Aussichtsbereich mit Sitzen im oberen Bereich, gratis Pins, Anhänger und einen Bereich zwischen den Waggons, wo der obere Teil offen ist und man seinen Kopf raushängen lassen kann. Während der Fahrt bekommt man über Lautsprecher interessantes über den Zug und die Umgebung erzählt. Es kommt sogar jemand rum und verteilt kostenlose Stadtpläne von Fairbanks.

Dies ist einer meiner besten Zugerlebnisse.

Journey by train

The Alaska Railroad (ARR) is a railroad which extends from Seward in the south of the state of Alaska to Fairbanks (passing through Anchorage and Denali National Park). The railroad has a mainline over 470 miles (760 km) long.

The cheapest and fastest way to go from Denali to Fairbanks is probably the bus but more beautiful is to go the 122 miles (196 km) by train. The ticket cost $ 66 (€ 50) and the ride takes 4 hours.

Der Spruch der Bahn ist: "Die beste Art Alaska zu sehen ist von den Schienen" - - - The slogan from Alaska Railroad is: "The best way to see Alaska is from the railroad."

The seats are very comfortable. There is a bistro, a restaurant, a glass dome upstairs with great views and you get free pins and pendants. Between cars there is the top part of the door open so you can put your head outside and get a great view. During the ride you get a lot of interesting information about the train and the surrounding areas you pass by. There is also somebody who come around and give you a free map of Fairbanks.

This was one of my best train rides ever.
