Gran Canaria liegt 210 Kilometer westlich vor der Küste Südmarokkos und hat etwa 850.000 Einwohner. Sie ist mit einer Fläche von 1560,1 km² nach Teneriffa und Fuerteventura die drittgrößte der Kanarischen Inseln, einer Autonomen Gemeinschaft Spaniens. Die annähernd kreisförmige Insel hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 50 Kilometern und eine Küstenlänge von rund 236 Kilometern. Gemessen an der Bevölkerung ist Gran Canaria nach Teneriffa die zweitgrößte Insel der Kanaren. Die Hauptstadt ist Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Mein erster Plan war eigentlich meine erste Kreuzfahrt zu machen. Ich habe bereits schon vorher nach Mitfahrern im Internet gesucht, denn alleine ist der Aufpreis meist viel zu hoch. Ich habe auch einige Antworten bekommen. Als dann klar wurde wann genau ich Urlaub habe und erneut gesucht habe, hat sich niemand gemeldet. Also musste ich mir was anderes überlegen. Ich habe viele Ideen gehabt; ich habe auch nach geführten Touren geguckt, aber nichts Passendes gefunden.
Dann dachte ich ich schau mal, wo es günstige Flüge gibt; warm sollte es schon sein. Ich habe Destinationen wie Malta und Zypern verglichen, aber leider erfolglos. Dann kam ich auf die Idee: Hey, Kanaren, da war ich noch nie, es ist weit weg und doch dauert der Flug nicht allzu lange. Ich wollte aber mehr als nur eine Insel sehen. Nach einem Blick auf Google Maps kam Fuerteventura und Lanzarote oder Gran Canaria und Teneriffa in Frage. Als ich nach Gabelflügen geguckt habe war das beste Angebot die ersten beiden. Bekannte sagten immer Teneriffa ist eine super Wanderinsel. Durch Zufall entdeckte ich dann doch noch einen super Preis für einen Flug von Hamburg nach Las Palmas auf Gran Canaria und zurück von Teneriffa Süd nach Hamburg mit Condor inkl. Gepäck für unter 200,- €. Ich habe 10 Tage, davon 4 Tage für Gran Canaria und 6 Tage für Teneriffa. Hab dann auch gleich gebucht, sowie auf beiden Inseln auch gleich ein Mietwagen mit allem drum und dran für um die 20 € am Tag. Drei verschiedene Unterkünfte auf der ersten und die erste Nacht auf der zweiten wurde auch gleich gebucht. Und los gings am 04. November landete ich nach 4,5 Stunden im Warmen auf dem Flughafen von Gran Canaria, der liegt in der Mitte der Insel an der Ostküste etwa 30 Minuten südlich von der Hautstadt Las Palmas.
Ich hab mir direkt den Mietwagen genommen und bin erstmal auf der in meinen Reiseführer ausgewiesenem Scenic Route ins Gebirge. Die Landschaft ist wunderschön. Im Anschluss habe ich einen kurzen Abstecher am berühmten Dünen-Strand von Maspalomas gemacht. Der Ort ist überfüllt mit Deutschen, also schnell vorbei an den „Atemlos“-gröhlendem Volk und weiter gen Hostel. Es wurde schon dunkel. Meine ausgesuchte Unterkunft liegt im Osten der Insel. Das „Friends-Hostel“ war nett, aber nicht nett genug.
Am nächsten Tag bin ich zum Hostel wo ich unbedingt hin wollte, eigengtlich einen Tag vorher, war aber ausgebucht. Das „El Warung Cave Hostel“ hat sehr gute Bewertungen und das interessante es ist in eine Höhle gebaut, wie viele Gebäude in dem Ort Artenara. In Australien habe ich auch einmal in einem Höhlen-Hostel gewohnt. Die Herberge, der Manager und die Gäste waren super, wir saßen bis spät in die Nacht zusammen mit ein paar Flaschen Wein.
Einen Tag später wollte ich mehr vom Landesinneren sehen. Es gibt ein paar Touristenmagneten in der Mitte von Gran Canaria; da wären Cruz de Tejeda, Poco de las Nieves und Roque Nublo. Noch einen weiteren lustigem Abend mit Wein im Hostel und früh am Morgen entlang der Nordwestküste in die Hauptstadt Las Palmas, wo ich den Wagen in der Stadt abgegeben habe. Hier wohnte ich über airbnb in einem erst vor wenigen Tagen eröffnetem Hostel (Elmundostal 15 €). Ich wurde sehr nett empfangen. Ich kam am Nachmittag an und bin zunächst mit dem Bus in die Altstadt und dann wieder in die andere Richtig gen Hafen und Strand. Ich habe mir fest vorgenommen schwimmen zu gehen, es waren an die 30 grad, nachdem ich mir mal kurz die AIDA von Nahem betrachtet habe, und mich erkundigt habe, wie es am nächsten Tag weitergeht, fing es doch tatsächlich an zu regnen. „Scheiß drauf“, dachte ich ich geh trotzdem schwimmen. Nach dem Umziehen hat es aber auch aufgehört. Mir hat es hier sehr gut gefallen.
An Tag 5 nahm ich dann den Bus zum Fährhafen an der Westküste der Insel im Ort Puerto de las Nieves, die Fahrt dauerte nur etwa 1 Stunde. Die Busverbindungen sind super und sehr gut organisiert.

Die Fährfahrt von Agaete auf Gran Canaria nach Santa Cruz de Tenerife hat mit der Schnellfähre nur 1 Stunde und 20 Minuten gedauert und kostet 42,50 €. Es geht auch günstiger, aber dann viel langsamer. In der Hauptstadt habe ich mir über airbnb eine Unterkunft bei einer älteren Dame besorgt. Es war ein wenig komisch, da der Bruder da war, der wie ich hörte dort wohnte und sie nicht. Die Wohnung war so was von altbacken eingerichtet wie aus Urgroßmutters Zeiten, sehr zugestellt. Mein Zimmer war noch bewohnt vom letztem Bewohner. Ich hab ewig gewartet bis alles geklärt war. Ich bin dann erst mal in die Stadt denn es war auch schon nachmittags und ich hatte nur einen halben Tag in der Stadt. Mehr brauchte ich allerdings auch nicht. So gut hat mir es hier nicht gefallen. Die Stadt ist teils sehr heruntergekommen, einen Strand gibt es nicht und das Museum war nur so Semi-interessant. Es war auch kein tolles einheimisches Restaurant zu finden. Las Palmas ist viel netter. Als ich wieder in die Wohnung kam, ist der andere ausgezogen und die Besitzerin war am Zimmer putzen. Der Bruder hat Nachtschicht und sie saß nur da die halbe Nacht. Es war noch ein anderes deutsches Mädchen da, aber die war noch komischer, nicht mal ein Hallo hat sie so richtig rausgebracht. Naja, ich hatte ein eigenes Zimmer und konnte mir mein Abendbrot zubereiten.
Mein Plan am nächsten Morgen war mich in den Bus zu setzen und zum Flughafen Süd zu fahren um den bestellten Mietwagen zu holen, denn von dort flog ich später zurück nach Hause. Auch hier dauert die Fahrt nur etwa 1 Stunde. Ich war viel zu früh da, ich hatte den Mietwagen erst für später bestellt. Nun hieß es 3 Stunden warten oder in den sauren Apfel beißen und ein teureres Auto nehmen; ich dachte mir „was solls“ ein wenig Luxus muss sein. Der Service lies allerdings zu wünschen übrig, auch bei der Abgabe.
Spontan bin ich in das Zentrum der Insel zum Vulkan El Teide.
Der Nationalpark El Teide (spanisch: Parque nacional del Teide) ist nach dem Berg Teide (3718 m) benannt, wurde 1954 als Nationalpark ausgewiesen und 2007 zum UNESCO-Welterbe erklärt.
Es führt eine Gondel den Berg hoch, oben gibt es ein paar Wanderwege. Mit vorheriger Genehmigung kann man auch ganz bis zum Gipfel hochwandern. Einen Gondelplatz habe ich vorher online gebucht, denn spontan kommt man nur nach sehr langem Warten hoch. Die Hin- und Rückfahrt kostet 27 €. Ich mag die weite Leere der Vulkanlandschaft, die Aussicht war atemberaubend. Das nervenaufreibenste war einen Parkplatz zu suchen. Die Autos standen kilometerweit von der Gondel entfernt, ich bin über 30 Minuten rauf und runtergefahren, bis ich endlich etwas gefunden habe. Ich kam zu spät zu meiner Gondelzeit konnte aber dann doch gleich hoch, da ich vorgelassen wurde. Also entweder mit dem Bus fahren oder frühzeitig los und gute Nerven mitbringen. Oben gibt es nichts außer teure Getränke– und Süßigkeitenautomaten und ein Klo. Ein Café gibt es nur unten, also lieber was mit nach oben nehmen. Ich war etwa 1,5 Stunden oben.

Im Anschluss bin ich dann in den Ort „Las Galletas“ etwa 50 km im Süden an der Küste. Über airbnb habe ich mir für zwei Nächte ein Bett im Garten besorgt. Die Familie ist aus Estland und hat ein Eckhaus mit Garten wo sie unter einem Mosquitonetz einen netten Gästebereich eingerichtet hatten.
Die Nacht war sehr stürmisch aber keinesfalls kalt. Ich hab wunderbar geschlafen. Am Abend bin ich in ein Restaurant, es ist ein kleiner Touristenort mit mehreren unterschiedlichen Restaurants neben dem anderen.
Am nächsten Tag bin ich zu einem der größten Touristenstädten nach „Los Christianos“. Der Strand ist schön, aber sehr überlaufen. Ich hab mir dann den Luxus einer Pediküre und Massage gegönnt, hab mich an Strand gelegt und bin ein bisschen rumgefahren.
Die Familie war sehr nett, hatten leider nicht allzu viel Zeit, Sie haben eine interessante Geschichte, deswegen mag es bei Leuten zu wohnen, man lernt so viel.
Die nächste Übernachtungsmöglichkeit war das „Hostel Tenerife“ in La Orotava an der Westküste. Ein Bett im gemischtem 4-Bettzimmer mit Einzelbetten kostet 15 €. Das Hostel ist sehr beliebt und immer gut besucht. Die Managerin gibt sich sehr viel Mühe, ich wurde toll empfangen; nette Gäste waren auch da. Bevor ich zum Hostel bin, hab ich mir erst den botanischen Garten im Nachbarort Santa de la Cruz angeschaut sowie ein altes Herrenhaus im Ort. Der Ort ist sehr schön mit kleinen Gassen und interessanten alten Gebäuden.
Auf dem Weg zum nächsten Hostel fuhr ich am folgendem Tag zum Anaga Gebirge, wo ich ein wenig wandern wollte. Es ist ein sehr vielseitiges Naturschutzgebiet. Das grüne Gebirge mit seinen Lorbeerwäldern, tiefen Schluchten, schroffen Felsklippen, Bergdörfern und Panoramastraßen gehört zu den feuchtesten Gebieten, und daher wen wundert´s, es hat geregnet. Gewandert bin ich trotzdem auch wenn weniger als geplant.
Im Anschluss fuhr ich an die Küste dort war das Wetter, welch eine Überraschung, total das Gegenteil, es war an die 30 grad und sonnig, daraufhin bin ich erst mal zu einem schönem Strand „San Andrés“ und habe mir ein Bad im Meer gegönnt.
Für das letzte Hostel wollte ich nicht allzu weit weg vom Flughafen sein, das beste was ich finden konnte liegt in Güímar etwa 40 km nördlich vom Flughafen Süd. Hier ist die Hauptattraktion die sechs rechteckig langgestreckten, pyramidenförmigen Terrassenbauten aus mörtelfrei aufgeschichteten Lavasteinen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Die hab ich mir kurz vor Ende angeschaut und dann ins Hostel „Explorer´s Retreat“ (14 €). Hier hat´s mir sehr gut gefallen. Abends ein bisschen in die Stadt zum bummeln und Abendessen.
Am nächsten Morgen fuhr ich zum Flughafen, brachte den Wagen zurück, fand einen Kratzer, aber wie gut, dass ich immer Vollkasko buche.
Es war ein toller eher spontaner Urlaub. Wobei mir Gran Canaria landschaftlich einen Tick besser gefallen hatte. Ich kann mir nun gut vorstellen, die anderen Inseln der Kanaren nun auch zu erkunden.

My first idea was to do a cruise. I already looked earlier for travel mates on the internet. The price for a single person is way to high. I found a few people who were interested; but when I know the dates of my vacation I did not get any answers. So I will go on holiday on my own. I did not know where to as my bucket list was already done. I had a few ideas either doing a guided tour or visit islands in Europe I have not been to. There was no tour I was interested in available so I checked all the cheap flights to places like Cyprus or Malta. No luck here at this time. Then I suddelny thought: Hey, I wanted to see the Canary Islands at some stage. It is warm there and not too far away and you can get cheap flights. I checked out google maps. I wanted to see more than one island. The best was either go to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote or Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Finally I found the best flights for the second two. I was more interested in Tenerife anyway as people say it is the best island for hiking. I found a cheap flight from Hamburg to Gran Canaria and back from South Tenerife with Condor under 200,- €. I also booked a rental car on both islands for about 20 € a day and the first days of accommodation; three nights on Gran Canaria and the first night on Tenerife. I left on 4 November and arrived just 4.5 hours later in the warmth. The airport is located in the middle of the island on the east coast but the island is so small it takes just 30 minutes to the capital Las Palmas in the north.
I picked up a rental car at the airport and started with a scenic drive into the mountains which was mentioned in my guide book. The scenery is stunning. Afterwards I made a quick stop at the famous beach “Maspalomas”. The town is filled with Germans. I really realised it when I heard one of the most famous German song at the moment. It was already going to get darker so I drove directly to my booked hostel. The “Friends Hostel” is located in the east of the island. It was nice but not the nicest one.
The next day I went to the hostel I really wanted to stay in. The “El Warung Cave Hostel“, it is like the name - a hostel built inside the rock like lots of buildings in this town called Artenara. It has very good reviews and is something special. Once I stayed in a cave hostel in Australia. The hostel, the manager, the guests were all great. We sat togther untill late at night chatting and drinking wine.

Es war ein toller eher spontaner Urlaub. Wobei mir Gran Canaria landschaftlich einen Tick besser gefallen hatte. Ich kann mir nun gut vorstellen, die anderen Inseln der Kanaren nun auch zu erkunden.

Gran Canaria originally meaning "Great [Island] of Dogs") is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands, an African archipelago which is part of Spain, with a population around 850,000. Located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 kilometres (93 mi) off the northwestern coast of Africa and about 1,350 km (840 mi) from Europe. Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the archipelago in both area and altitude.
My first idea was to do a cruise. I already looked earlier for travel mates on the internet. The price for a single person is way to high. I found a few people who were interested; but when I know the dates of my vacation I did not get any answers. So I will go on holiday on my own. I did not know where to as my bucket list was already done. I had a few ideas either doing a guided tour or visit islands in Europe I have not been to. There was no tour I was interested in available so I checked all the cheap flights to places like Cyprus or Malta. No luck here at this time. Then I suddelny thought: Hey, I wanted to see the Canary Islands at some stage. It is warm there and not too far away and you can get cheap flights. I checked out google maps. I wanted to see more than one island. The best was either go to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote or Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Finally I found the best flights for the second two. I was more interested in Tenerife anyway as people say it is the best island for hiking. I found a cheap flight from Hamburg to Gran Canaria and back from South Tenerife with Condor under 200,- €. I also booked a rental car on both islands for about 20 € a day and the first days of accommodation; three nights on Gran Canaria and the first night on Tenerife. I left on 4 November and arrived just 4.5 hours later in the warmth. The airport is located in the middle of the island on the east coast but the island is so small it takes just 30 minutes to the capital Las Palmas in the north.
I picked up a rental car at the airport and started with a scenic drive into the mountains which was mentioned in my guide book. The scenery is stunning. Afterwards I made a quick stop at the famous beach “Maspalomas”. The town is filled with Germans. I really realised it when I heard one of the most famous German song at the moment. It was already going to get darker so I drove directly to my booked hostel. The “Friends Hostel” is located in the east of the island. It was nice but not the nicest one.
The next day I went to the hostel I really wanted to stay in. The “El Warung Cave Hostel“, it is like the name - a hostel built inside the rock like lots of buildings in this town called Artenara. It has very good reviews and is something special. Once I stayed in a cave hostel in Australia. The hostel, the manager, the guests were all great. We sat togther untill late at night chatting and drinking wine.
One day later I wanted to see more of the interior of Gran Canaria. There are several tourist spots in the middle of the island like Cruz de Tejeda, Poco de las Nieves and Roque Nublo. After another funny evening at the hostel I left in the early morning along the western and northern coast towards the capital “Las Palmas”. There I dropped off the car in the city. I stayed in a hostel (Elmundostal 15 €) I found through the internet platform “airbnb”. It just opened a few days ago. I felt very welcome. I arrived in the afternoon so I went straight to the old town and back again to the centre with the port and beach. I really wanted to go for a swim at least once. It was about 30 degrees and after a quick look at the AIDA cruise ship and checking out how to get to the port the following day I was ready to change. Right at that time it started drizzeling but what the hell I went swimming anyway. It stopped raining shortly after I was about to go into the Atlantic. It is a lovely beach.
On day 5 I took the bus to the port on the west coast of the island. It takes about an hour. The bus connection is very good and well organised.
I really enjoyed Gran Canaria. The island is stunning. The landscape is breathtaking, I liked the capital with its beautiful beach. I am looking forward to Tenerife.

About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most of any of the Canary Islands. „Teide National Park“, a World Heritage Site in the center of the island, has Teide, the highest elevation of Spain, the highest of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the third-largest volcano in the world from its base.
The ferry ride from „Agaete“ on Gran Canaria to „Santa Cruz de Tenerife“ with the fast ferry took only 1 hour and 20 minutes for a fee of 42,50 €. There is a cheaper ferry but it will take longer. In the capital I booked a room through airbnb with an older lady. It was a weird place as the lady wasn´t home but her brother how I found out lived there and not her. The apartment looked like is has not change in the last 60 years. It was the most old-fashioned home I have ever seen and extremly filled with kitsch. The last guy didn´t move out yet so I waited a long time until the woman came. I said I will go out and will come back later as it was only afternoon and I only had one day in the city. I found out I did not need longer to see the city. Santa Cruz is very run down; there is no beach and the museum was not the most interesting one ever. I could not find a typical local restaurant. I prefer Las Palmas. When I was back in the apartment the woman was cleaning my room. The guy who was suppose to move out this morning came back and was gone. The brother works at the port doing night shifts and the lady was sitting in the lounge half the night. A German girl was also staying there but was also weird. I have only seen her once for a split second and she locked herself in her room. Well, I had my own room for less money and I was able to prepare food.
My plan for the next morning was to take the bus to the airport south which is one hour south on the east coast. From there I will fly back home. I was way too early at the airport. I should have booked the car for an earlier time. I had two options either wait 3 hours or pay extra for an upgrade. I decided to get a luxury vehicle and pay extra. The service at the car rental station was overall bad.
Spontaneously I drove to the centre of the Island to the „El Teide“ volcano.
Mount Teide (Pico del Teide) is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Its 3,718-metre (12,198 ft) summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic.
You can get up with a gondola. There are some walking trails and with a permit you can even hike to the summit. I booked a spot for the gondola ahead because othterwise there is a very long waiting time. The return trip cost 27 €. I love the empty vastness of the volcanic landscape. The view is breathtaking. The worst part of this trip was the search for a parking spot. I drove many times up and down the hill. People parked for at least one kilometer a long the road. Finally after 30 minutes I found a spot at the car park not far from the entrance. I was late for my booked time but was allowed to jump the queue. You better be off take the bus or arrive at least way too early and even better first thing in the morning. At the top there is only a toilet and expensive vending machines but there is a cafe at the bottom station. I suggest take something to eat and drink with you. I was at the top for about 1.5 hours.
After the fantastic ride I drove to a small town called „Las Gallettas“. It is located about 50 km south at the coast. With airbnb I booked two nights a bed in the garden. The family is from Estonia and they live in a corner house with a small garden where they put a bed with mosquito net and made a nice lounge. I took my dinner at a touristic restaurant strip. It was a very stormy night but still not cold at all. I had a wonderful sleep.
The next day I went to one of the biggest tourist towns „Los Christianos“. The beach is beautiful but way too full. I thought I need a bit of luxury so allowed myself a pedicure and massage. I stayed a while on the beach for tanning and swimming and the rest of the day I just drove around in this area.
The family I stayed with is very nice unfortunately we did not had much time for chatting. They have an interesting story that is why I love staying with people to get to know their story. You learn so much.
My next destination was the „Hostel Tenerife“ in La Orotava on the west coast. One bed in a mixed 4-bed-dorm cost 15 €. The accommodation is very popular and always very well attended. The manager makes a big effort to show you around and tells you everything you need to know. Before I arrived at the hostel I visited the botanical garden in the neighbouring town Santa de la Cruz and an old mansion in La Orotava, The town is pretty with its small alleys and interesting old buildings.

On the way to the next hostel I left in the early morning to the Anaga Mountain in the north. My plan was to do some hiking. It is a diverse nature reserve. The green mountains with its laurel forest, deep gorges, jagged cliffs, mountain villages and panoramic views belongs to one of the wettest areas and - who wonders – it rained. Never mind I still went for a short hike.
Afterwards I drove to the coast and I arrived at the beach it was sunny and hot so I went for a swim at „San Andrés“.
For my last hostel I did not wanted to stay to far from the airport. I found a good one in Güímar 40 km up north from the airport south. The main attraction there are the Pyramids of Güímar. They refer to six rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures built from lava stone without the use of mortar from the 19th century. I had a quick look as I arrived one hour before closing. I stayed at the hostel „Explorer´s Retreat“ (14 €). I liked that place. For dinner I went out to the nearby centre.
The next morning I drove to the airport and brought back the car. There was a scratch but fortunately I always book comprehensive collision coverage.
It was an awesome sponteanous trip. I would say I prefer Gran Canaria because of the landscape a bit more. I am interested in the other islands of the Canaries now.
Afterwards I drove to the coast and I arrived at the beach it was sunny and hot so I went for a swim at „San Andrés“.
