Massachusetts

Massachusetts ist ein Bundesstaat der USA und Teil von Neuengland. Der Name Massachusetts ist von dem Wort der Massachusett-Sprache [mass-adschu-s-et] abgeleitet und bedeutet sinngemäßer in etwa „bei den großen Hügeln“. Er bezeichnet sehr wahrscheinlich den Great Blue Hill etwa 15 km südwestlich von Boston. Massachusetts grenzt im Norden an New Hampshire und Vermont, im Westen an New York, im Süden an Connecticut und Rhode Island. Im Osten liegt der Atlantische Ozean. Die größte Stadt ist Boston. Höchster Punkt von Massachusetts ist der Mount Greylock im Berkshire County (1.063 m).

Boston ist die größte Stadt in Neuengland und Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Massachusetts an der Ostküste der USA. Sie hat etwa 650.000 Einwohner. Die Metropole ist eine der ältesten, wohlhabendsten und kulturell reichsten Städte der USA. Sie beheimatet in ihrem Großraum sowohl die weltberühmte Harvard University als auch das ähnlich bedeutende MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), beide in Cambridge gelegen.

In der Umgebung liegt auch Salem. Bekannt wurde die Stadt durch die Hexenprozesse, die im Jahr 1692 stattfanden. Dies trug ihr den Beinamen The Witch City (deutsch: „Die Hexen-Stadt“) ein.

Die Harvard University (kurz Harvard) ist eine private Universität in Cambridge im Großraum Boston. Die Gründung geht zurück auf das Jahr 1636, als fromme englische Kolonisten den Beschluss fassten, eine Ausbildungsstätte für Geistliche zu errichten. Aus dieser Schule ging die Harvard-Universität hervor, die damit die älteste Universität der Vereinigten Staaten ist.

Nach Rhode Island fuhr ich eigenlich direkt nach Boston. Ich hatte eine Notfall-Couchsurfing-Anfrage gestellt und ein Mädel hat sich gemeldet. Ich bin zwei Nächte bei ihr geblieben. Bevor ich bei ihr ankam habe ich mir in einigen Stunden die Stadt angeschaut. Am nächsten Tag bin ich in die Hexenstadt Salem gefahren. War ne nette kleine Stadt mit vielen Museen zum Thema. Am Nachmittag wollte ich dann rechtzeitig zum WM-Final-Spiel Deutschland gegen Argentinien in Boston sehen. Hatte über couchsurfing mich mich welchen so halbwegs verabredet, da ich aber im Verkehr steckte kam ich zu spät und der Bildschirm in ner kleinen Gasse war so klein und es waren so viele Leute da, dass man gar nichts sehen konnte. Da bin ich schnell in die nächst beste Bar. Und hab unseren Sieg dort gesehen. War sehr komisch, da ich alleine war, niemanden kannte und nachdem das Spiel zuende war und alle ihre Wege gegangen sind.

Am nächsten Tag habe ich die Harvard-Tour gemacht (oder Havahd, wie die Bostoner es aussprechen). War wieder sehr interessant, die Gebäude waren ganz anders als in Yale, hauptsächlich rote Backsteingebäude. Von der Architektur hat mir Yale doch besser gefallen.

Weiter gings gen Westen bis zum Ende des Staates. Ein paar kurze Stopps und in den Bergen wollte ich mal eine neue Übernachtsmöglickeit in Nordamerika ausprobieren nämlich im Auto schlafen. Am Fuße des Berges hieß es auf dem Schild, dass das Parken übernacht sogar erlaubt war. Es wurde schon langsam dunkel. Also erstmal mein Salat zum Abend gegessen und dann schon zum Sonnenuntergang den Berg hoch. Oben stand zwar ein Schild, dass nur die, die in der nahegelegenden Lodge übernachten hier stehen dürfen, aber das war mir nun egal, es war schließlich schon fast ganz dunkel. Das Schlafen war sehr interessant, es waren einige Leute da die kamen und gingen. Um etwa Mitternacht war ich das einzige Auto und neben mir stoppte der Ranger. Ich sah ihn nur etwas aufschreiben und ich dachte, er schreib mir ein Strafzettel oder so. Als er es an die Windschutzscheibe heften wollte, habe ich geöffnet. Ich dachte er hätte mich gesehen, aber ne, den hab ich ganz schön erschreckt. Er wollte mir nur ne nette Nachricht schreiben, falls ich nachts wieder fahre, sollte ich auf Tiere aufpassen. Er sagte, das wäre eine gute Idee von mir, hier zu übernachten und nicht nachts zu fahren. Von den Parkgebühren, die normalerweise anfallen hat er auch nichts erwähnt. Na dann. Viel geschlafen habe ich auch nicht wirklich, zum Sonnenaufgang wollte ich weiter. Bin noch kurz auf den Lookout, aber es war so nebelig, dass nichts zu sehen war.

Salem

Die nächste Nacht habe ich im October Mountain State Park gecampt. Dieser war nur ne Stunde von Mount Greylock entfernt. Ich bin aber vorher noch in den Nordwesten von Conneticut gefahren, da ich gehört hatte, das es eine nette Gegend sein wollte. War ne sehr schöne Landschaft, aber kein unbedingtes Muß, ich hatte aber noch Zeit zu verbummeln bis zu meiner nächsten Verabredung.

Was ich gelernt habe, während ich so durch die Wälder und Hügellandschaften gefahren bin ist wie penetrant Stinktiere stinken, und das waren nur die überfahrenen.

It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Boston's many "firsts" include the United States' first public school (1635), and first subway system (1897). The city has one of the highest costs of living in the US. Also in greater Boston in Cambridge there is the well-known MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts (3 miles or 5 km northwest of Boston), whose history, influence and wealth have made it one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Established in 1636 and soon thereafter named for John Harvard (its first benefactor), Harvard is the United States' oldest institution of higher learning

After Rhode Island I drove directly to Boston. After I couldn´t find a couchsurfer I did an emergency request. I got an invitation from a very nice woman and stayed two nights there. Before I went to her place I spent half the day exploring Boston. The next day I drove to Salem, the witch town. It is a nice little place with lots of tiny museums about witchcraft. In the afternoon I wanted to be back in Boston for the Soccer World Cup to see the final match Germany vs. Argentina. I organized to meet some people but I was caught in traffic so I was late. The outside viewing was just a small TV with way to many people in front of it so I went to the next pub. It was weird that I did not know anybody and after our victory everybody left immediately.

The following day it did the Harvard tour (or “Havahd” how the Bostonians say). Also this university was interesting. The buildings were totally different than in Yale. They are mostly made of red brick. I actually prefer the buildings in Yale.

I left towards the west until I reached almost the end of the state. I just did some short stops. In the mountains I wanted to find a new way of accommodation in North America. This night I wanted to sleep in my car. I checked the signs at the beginning of the park and it actually says that overnight parking is allowed. It was getting dark so I ate my salad for dinner and drove up the mountain all the way to the top. There was a sign that only overnight guests of the lodge were allowed to leave the car overnight but I didn´t care. My sleep was interesting. A few people came and left. Around midnight the ranger parked next to me and started writing something. I thought he will write me a ticket. When he wanted to put it behind my windshield wipers I opened the door because I thought he had already seen me but he didn´t. I scared him a bit. It turned out that the paper was about to remind me if I drive at night I have to be careful and watch for wildlife crossing the road. He said it was a great idea to sleep here instead of driving at night. He didn´t even ask for the parking fee you usually have to pay. Alright then. I didn´t sleep much that night but it was only one night. I wanted to leave at sunrise. Unfortunately it was so foggy that I couldn´t see anything when I went the few meters further to the top.

October Mountain

The next night I stayed at a campground at October Mountain State Park. This was only one hour away from Greylock Mountain but I drove back to northwest Connecticut because I heard that is a nice place. It was indeed beautiful but not really a must do. But I had a lot of spare time until my next appointment.

By the way what I learned while I was driving through the forest and hilly roads in the states – how stinky a skunk can be even when it is dead.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island ist der kleinste Bundesstaat der USA und Teil der Region Neuengland. Ein holländischer Forscher, nannte das Land wegen seiner roten Erde „Rhode Eylandt“, woraus im Laufe der Jahre das englische Rhode Island wurde. Die Beinamen Rhode Islands lauten „The Ocean State“ (Ozean-Staat) und „Little Rhody“ (Klein-Rhody). Rhode Island ist etwa 5 mal kleiner als Schleswig-Holstein.

Providence ist die Hauptstadt von Rhode Island. Mit etwa 178.000 Einwohnern ist sie die drittgrößte Stadt der Neuenglandstaaten. Die Stadt wurde vom Stadtgründer Roger Williams nach Gottes gnädiger Vorsehung (God’s merciful Providence) benannt, nachdem er 1636 mit seinen Anhängern vertrieben worden war.

 

Newport

Ich war ja bereits in Connecticut vor der Tür von Rhode Island. Ich bin zunächst nach Newport gefahren. Es ist eine touristische Insel mit vielen alten Herrenhäusern und man kann entlang der Küste fahren. Weiter gings in die Hauptstadt Providence durch den nächsten Bundesstaat Massachusetts, das ging schneller. In Providence habe ich couchsurfing gemacht, bei einer jugen Frau und ihren 2 Mitbewohnern. Ich war ihre erste Couchsurferin. Ich war erstaunt, wie sauber das Haus war, für 3 junge Leute. Sie hat einen guten Job gemacht. Sie hat eine Lasagne in den Ofen geworfen und ich habe mich nett mit ihr und den Mitbewohnern unterhalten. Später sind wir noch in eine nette Bar direkt am Wasser und dann nach „Twin River“ ins Casino. Ich hab mal $ 5 geopfert und an den Spielautomaten gespielt. Hier und da hab ich ein paar Cent gewonnen und verloren. Ich war bereits bei einen Dollar etwas und als ich die 5 Dollar wiederhatte habe ich mir diese wieder auszahlen lassen. War ein netter Abend.
 

Am nächsten Tag sind wir am Wasser spazieren gegangen und haben noch gemeinsam zu Mittag gegessen bevor ich dann weiter bin, um mir die Stadt anzuschauen. Natürlich durfte das obligatorische State Capitol nicht fehlen, sowie die Brown Universität und ein paar alte Gebäude. Ich habe meine Couchsurferin dann noch bei der Arbeit besucht. Sie arbeitet in einem Pralinen-Shop, da habe ich dann gleich noch ein paar Gratis-Proben bekommen. Die Stadt hat mir gefallen. Abends bin ich dann nach „Cranston“ zum nächsten Couchsurfer. Die Stadt liegt nicht mal eine halbe Stunde entfernt. Hier gibt es nichts zu sehen, aber wir hatten eine nette Unterhaltung und haben ein paar Bierchen getrunken.

Rhode Island is a state in New England. It is the smallest in area, but the second most densely populated of the 50 US states behind New Jersey. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east, and it shares a water boundary with New York's Long Island to the southwest. Rhode Island was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself independent on May 4, 1776, two months before any other colony. Rhode Island's official nickname is "The Ocean State", a reference to the State's geography, since Rhode Island has several large bays and inlets.

Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is the second-largest city in the New England region after Boston. Providence has a city population of about 180,000. It was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence", which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle.

I was already very close to Rhode Island when I stayed in Connecticut. First I drove to Newport. It is a very touristic island. You can see nice old mansions and do a drive along the coast. Then I drove to the capital Providence. I actually drove through Massachusetts because it was closer. I found a couchsurfer in Providence; a girl with her two flat mates. The apartment was surprisingly clean for that young people. I was their first couchsurfer. She did a great job. I got even Lasagna for dinner. I had some nice chats with all the inhabitants. We went to a bar on the waterfront and later to “Twin River” to a casino. I spent $ 5 and played at the slot machines. I was down to less than $ 2 but played until I was back to my $ 5. I didn´t lose any money. It was fun.

The next day we went for a walk along the waterfront and had lunch together until I said good bye to go to explore the city. Of course I couldn´t miss the State Capitol as well the Brown University and some old buildings. I visited my couchsurfer at her work. She works at a chocolate shop where I got to taste some of it. I liked the city. At the evening I went to the next town “Cranston” where I stayed also with a couchsurfer. There is nothing to see here so we just had a nice talk and had some beer.

Connecticut

Connecticut ist der drittkleinste Bundesstaat im Nordosten der USA. Er ist etwas kleiner als Schleswig-Holstein. Er liegt am Atlantik und ist Teil der Region Neuengland. Die Hauptstadt ist Hartford. Connecticut war eine der dreizehn Kolonien, die während des amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges gegen das Königreich Großbritannien rebellierten. Der Name bedeutet soviel wie langer Fluss (der Gezeiten). Der Bundesstaat trägt den offiziellen Beinamen „The Constitution State“ (dt. Verfassungsstaat), der 1959 durch Gesetzesakt angenommen wurde. Connecticut grenzt im Norden an Massachusetts, im Osten an Rhode Island, im Süden an den Long Island Sound und im Westen an New York. Durchflossen wird der Staat vom größten Fluss Neuenglands: dem Connecticut River. Es wurden eine Menge Dinge hier erfunden, z. B. Frisbee, U-Boot, Lolli, Hamburger, Nähmaschine, Radio, Staubsauger oder das Wörterbuch.

 

Connecticut River

New Haven (deutsch Neuer Hafen oder Neuer Zufluchtsort) ist eine Stadt mit 130.000 Einwohnern. Am 28. Januar 1878 wurde in New Haven die erste öffentliche Telefonzelle aufgestellt. Bekannt ist der Ort wegen der Elitie-Uni „Yale“.

Die Yale University in New Haven ist eine der renommiertesten Universitäten der Welt und die drittälteste Hochschule der Vereinigten Staaten. Sie wurde 1701 gegründet. Die Yale University verfügt über mehr als zwei Dutzend Bibliotheken mit über 12,5 Millionen Büchern. Insgesamt 49 Nobelpreisträger haben in Yale studiert, gelehrt oder gearbeitet. Zu den Absolventen der Universität zählen fünf US-Präsidenten.

Schon als ich in Connecticut reinkam hat´s mir gleich gefallen. Beim „Welcome Center“ am Highway gab es gratis Getränke und Donots. Was für ein Start in einen neuen Bundesstaat. Für die Nacht habe ich wieder einen Couchsurfer in New Haven gefunden. Hier habe ich sozusagen das Meer erreicht. New Haven liegt zwar am Long Island Sound, aber ist Teil des Atlantiks. Ich bin zwei Nächte geblieben und habe natürlich eine Tour in der Yale Universität gemacht. Die Uni hat sehr schöne Gebäude, die Tour war sehr interssant. Das wars auch schon so ziemlich was ich hier getan habe.

Mein nächster Stop war die Hauptstadt, von der mir so ziemlich jeder abgeraten hat. Es gäbe nichts Interessantes und sollte man meiden. Ich wollte nun erst recht hin; ist ja auch nicht weit, da der Staat sehr klein ist. Die Strecke ist auch schon ein Highlight an sich. Ich fuhr am Connecticut River entlang und habe den Fluß mit einer kleinen Fähre überquert. Auf der anderen Seite, gab es ein Schloß „Gilette Caste“, welches von William Gilette (1853 – 1937) erbaut wurde. Er wurde bekannt als Schauspieler, der Shakespeare gespielt hatte. Es war eine nette Wanderung hoch zu dem Schloß, der eine recht interessante Bauweise aufweist.

Hartford ist die Hauptstadt des US-Bundesstaates Connecticut, im Zentrum des Staates am Connecticut River gelegen und hat etwa 125.000 Einwohnern. Die Herkunft des Namens ist auf Hartford in England, den Heimatort Samuel Stones, eines der Gründer der Stadt, zurückzuführen.

In Hartford gab es ein Hostel in einem alten Haus. Es war nicht das schlechteste Hostel in dem ich je gewohnt habe, aber gehört definitiv zu den Top 5. Die Küche war in einem misserablen Zustand, man konnte kaum etwas anfassen und sogar das saubere Geschirr war eklig dreckig. War mit $ 32 (€ 24) auch sehr überteuert. Naja, eine Nacht, was solls. Hier habe ich das grandiose Spiel der WM Deutschland gegen Brasilien geschaut, was wir mit 7 zu 1 gewonnen haben. In Hartford habe ich mir natürlich das Regierungsgebäude angeschaut und festgestellt, dass es mit das schönste ist, was ich bisher gesehen hatte. Nur kurz ein wenig in Downtown spazieren und mehr muß man hier auch nicht sehen. So schlecht wie alle sagen, war es also nicht. Auf dem Weg zu meiner nächsten Übernachtungsmöglichkeit bin ich durch Zufall in „Groton“ gelandet, hier liegt das erste nukleare U-Boot die „USS Nautilus“, welches man gratis besichtigen kann.

Mystic

Nächster Stop war der Ort „Mystic“, bekannt durch den 80er Film mit Julia Roberts „Pizza, Pizza“ (engl. Originalttel „Mystic Pizza“). Hier wurde viel gedreht, wobei das Gebäude, welches als die Pizzeria diente selbst in Stonington war. Der nette kleine Fischerort ist aber auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert.

Übernachtet habe ich in „Pawcatuck“. Ich habe couchsurfing bei einem Pärchen gemacht. Der Ort liegt direkt am Nachbar-Bundesstaat „Rhode Island“, der direkt am Fenster zu sehen war, denn er war nur wenige Meter entfernt.

Connecticut is the southernmost state in New England. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west. Its capital city is Hartford. The name Connecticut means "long tidal river." Connecticut is the third smallest state by area. The state is called the Constitution State, Nutmeg State, and "The Land of Steady Habits". A lot of inventions were made here like the Frisbee, the hamburger, the submarine, the sewing machine, the radio, the lollipop, the vacuum cleaner and the dictionary.

New Haven was founded in 1638 by English Puritans. It is located at the Long Island Sound in the south of Connecticut and has a population of about 130,000. In 1878 the first telephone booth was post here. The city is well known for the Yale University.

Yale University is the most famous institution in Connecticut. The private Ivy League research university was founded in 1701. The university is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The Yale University Library holds more than 15 million volumes and is the third-largest academic library in the United States. The university enrolls about 12,000 students. The central campus is located right in downtown New Haven. The university's assets include an endowment valued at $20.8 billion as of 2013, the second-largest of any academic institution in the world. Yale has graduated many notable alumni, including five U.S. Presidents, 19 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, and many foreign heads of state.

As soon as I entered Connecticut I liked it. They had free drinks and free donots at the Welcome Center at the highway. I found a couchsurfer for two nights in New Haven. It is located at the Long Island Sound but I count it that I arrived at the east coast. So I made it I crossed the country. Of course I did a tour at Yale. It was very interesting. They have nice buildings. That was pretty much it what I did there.

My next stop was the capital Hartford. Pretty much everybody I told that I am going said skip it. Hartford is ugly and there is nothing to do and to see. Now I really wanna see it. The way to the city itself is very worse going. It was not far anyway because the state is so small. I drove along the Connecticut River and crossed it on a little old ferry. Right on the other site is “Gilette Castle”, built by William Gilette (1853 – 1937). He was famous as an actor playing Shakespeare. It was a nice little hike up to the castle. The building itself is quite an interesting structure.

Hartford is the capital of the U.S. state of Connecticut. Hartford's population is about 125,000. Nicknamed the "Insurance Capital of the World", Hartford houses many insurance company headquarters. Almost 400 years old, Hartford is among the oldest cities in the United States. Following the American Civil War, Hartford was the wealthiest city in the United States for several decades. Today, Hartford is one of the poorest cities in the nation with 3 out of every 10 families living below the poverty line. Hartford is home to the Mark Twain House where the author wrote his most famous works and raised his family.

There is one hostel in Hartford. It is an old house and needs a bit of renovations. It was not the worst hostel ever but in the Top 5. The kitchen was extremly dirty. It was discusting. Even the clean dishes needed a wash before you can use it. The room was alright and if you don´t use the kitchen it is not that bad. $ 32 (€ 24) was way too expensive for what you get. Well, it was only for one night. I watched the awesome match at the Soccer World Cup Germany vs. Brazil. We won 7 to 1. The next day I visited the State Capitol. I think it is one of the most beautiful I have seen so far. I just had a quick look in the rest of downtown before I head off. Hartford is not as bad as I thought it would be but it is definitely enough just to spend a couple of hours here. On my way I stop in “Groton” at the south coast. By accident I saw that this is the place where they built the first nuclear submarine. You can visit the “USS Nautilus” even for free.

 

Connecticut

 

My next stop was the small town “Mystic”. It is known for the 80s movie “Mystic Pizza” with Julia Roberts. They used this fishing town as a location although the building of the pizzeria was in the next town in Stonington. It was worse a quick stop. For the night I stayed with a couchsurfing couple in “Pawcatuck”. This town is right at the neighboring state “Rhode Island” just a few meters away from the window.
