Von Banff nach Calgary

Canmore

Am Nachmittag verließen wir dann von Banff und fuhren in den nur 25km entfernten Ort „Canmore“. Dort gibt es nur ein Hostel (Alpine Club of Canada – 25$ mit Mitgliedschaft, 36 $ ohne) außerhalb der Stadt. Es war genau das richtige, wir hatten ein Zimmer für uns, es waren wenig Leute da, es gab einen netten Aufenthaltsraum mit Kamin.

Am nächsten Morgen dann der Schreck, es hat über Nacht geschneit und alles war weiß geworden. Wir haben uns nur kurz den Ort angeschaut und nach dem Mittag sind dann weiter nach Calgary, es war doch wenig kühl geworden. Calgary liegt weitere 100 km westlich von Canmore.

From Banff to Calgary

In the afternoon we took off from Banff and reached Canmore which is just 25 km away. There is only one hostel (Alpine Club of Canada – 25 $ with membership, 36 $ without) out of town but a very nice one. It was not busy so we had the room by ourselves and they have a nice common room with a fireplace. I was a bit shocked at the next morning because in the night it started snowing so all green was gone and it was white instead.

We had a quick look in town and only a short walk because there was still a little snow storm going on and it was quite chilly.

We left Canmore after lunch and drove to Calgary which is about 100 km even more in the west.

Banff ist der größte Ort innerhalb des Banff-Nationalparks in der kanadischen Provinz Alberta. Banff hat eine Bevölkerung von 7.584 Einwohnern. (Stand 2011).

Der Ort erhielt seinen Namen im Jahr 1884 durch einen ehemaligen Direktor der Canadian Pacific Railway, Lord Stephen, bzw. nach seiner schottischen Geburtsstadt Banff.

In Banff sind wir zum „Samesun Hostel“, was wir uns ausgeguckt hatten (Frühstück war inklusive), aber auf gut Glück nicht vorreserviert hatten. Es war was frei und auch in Ordnung. Es hat eine Bar und Restaurant und ausreichend Platz in dem Zimmer und sogar ein Bad ist mit drin.

Hier blieben wir zwei Nächte. Wir haben ein paar kleine Wanderungen zu Seen, Wasserfällen und Canyons gemacht.

Katrin hat zufällig welche getroffen, die sie vom Anfang ihrer Reise her kennt, die haben uns eingeladen bei ihnen zu übernachten und da Halloween war sind wir zusammen auf eine Party. Meine erste richtige Halloween-Party und das auch noch so spontan. Wir sind dann noch für Kostüme in Dollar-Shop und Second Hand-Laden und die Party konnte losgehen. Schon das Vorglühen war ein Spaß und die Party noch mehr.

Am nächsten Nachmittag nach der Erholungsphase sind wir dann aufgebrochen.

Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The town has a population of 7,584 (2011). The area was named Banff in 1884 by George Stephen, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, recalling his birthplace in Banff, Scotland.

In Banff we stayed at the “Samesun Hostel“, we looked it up before but didn´t booked it. We were lucky there was room. Breakfast was included, this was one of the reasons we chose it. It also has a bar and a restaurant and big rooms with an ensuite bathroom.

We did a few trips to lakes, waterfalls and canyons.

We stayed two nights and then Katrin met people by accident she knew from the beginning of her trip. They invited us to stay with them and go to a Halloween party together. It was kind of my first real Halloween party and even a spontaneous one. We checked out the thrift store and the dollar store to get something which would look like a costume. We started having fun at our host´ place. The party was awesome. We left at the next afternoon after our recovery.

Icefields Parkway

Der Highway 93 auch bekannt als „Icefields Parkway“ führt von Jasper bis nach Lake Louise. Die Straße gilt als eine der schönsten der Welt. Den Namen hat sie, da sie unter anderem an den „Columbia Icefields“ vorbeiführt sowie an etlichen weiteren Gletschern.

Am Dienstag 29. Oktober am Morgen verließ ich mit Kollegin Katrin den schönen Ort Jasper. Ich habe mir ein spezielles GPS (GyPSy) für einen Tag gemietet. Das Gerät erzählt, wo immer man lang fährt, wo man Anhalten sollte und man erfährt viel Wissenswertes über die Gegend. Wir haben die Stimme in Jasper und Lake Louise „George“ genannt und auf dem Highway „Judy“.

Nach mehreren Stopps bei Gletschern und Seen kamen wir nach 230 km am Lake Louise an. Die türkisblaue Farbe des Sees stammt von Steinmehl, das von Gletscherschmelzwasser in den See gespült wird. Lake Louise ist nach Prinzessin Louise Caroline Alberta, einer Tochter von Königin Victoria benannt.

Ein sehr wunderschöner See eingekesselt zwischen Bergen, mit dem richtigem Licht wäre es bestimmt noch traumhafter gewesen. Der Ort an sich ist eher ein Anreihung an Hotels, viel gabs nicht zu sehen. Also gings weiter nach Banff.

Nach weiteren 60 km waren wir dann in Banff. Die Strecke hat uns mit den vielen Stopps und kurzen Wanderungen den ganzen Tag gekostet, es war bereits dunkel. Alles in allen aber eine wirklich traumhafte Straße.

Highway 93 also called as the “Icefields Parkway” is known as one of the most beautiful highways in the world. It is named for features such as the Columbia Icefield, visible from the parkway. There are also many other glaciers and lakes along the road.

On Tuesday morning October 29 I left beautiful Jasper with my coworker Katrin. I rented a special GPS device (GyPSy). It tells you all the interesting facts about the region and shows you nice spots worth stopping. We called the voice in Jasper and Lake Louise “George” and the voice on the highway “Judy”.

Icefields Parkway

After a few stops at lakes and glaciers we arrived in Lake Louise after 230 km. It is called “Lake of the Little Fishes” by the Stoney Natoka First Nations people. The glacial Lake is named after the Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. The emerald color of the water comes from rock flour carried into the lake by melt-water from the glaciers that overlook the lake.

A gorgeous lake surrounded by mountains, with the right light it would be even more dreamlike. The village itself is a set of hotels. Not much to see here so we hit the road again to Banff.

After another 60 km we reached Banff. The route with all the stops and little hikes took us all day so we arrived in the dark. A really fantastic trip.

Der Job ist vorbei, der erste Schnee ist heruntergekommen und schon wieder weg; es wird Zeit zum Weiterziehen. Fast alle Kollegen sind bereits in alle Himmelsrichtungn verschwunden. Wir „Alpiners“ sind noch ein wenig aus gewesen, haben uns zum essen getroffen oder auch nur zum chatten. Dienstag am 29. Oktober breche ich mit meiner Kollegin Katrin auf gen Süden in Richtung Lake Louise und Banff.

Es war eine schöne und tolle Zeit.

The job is over, the first snow has fallen and gone again. It is time to move on. Almost all of my coworkers moved away already. We went out a bit, were chatting, going out for lunch, dinner or coffee. On Tuesday October 29 I will leave with my coworker Katrin towards south to Lake Louise and Banff.

It was a wonderful time.
