"Southeast Alaska State Fair”

Messe, Ausstellung, Jahrmarkt und Festival in einem. Eine „Fair“ (Messe) kenne ich bereits aus Australien; für eine kleine Stadt ist es meist das Highlight des Jahres, da endlich mal ordentlich was los ist.

Die „Fair“ findest von Donnerstag bis Freitag statt. Es spielen Bands, es gibt Rummelplatz-Spiele, jeder kann eine Handarbeit, gebackenes oder sein schönstes Foto oder Gemüse ausstellen und es wird prämiert, es gibt Fressbuden, Verkaufsstände, es finden Modeschauen und Theateraufführungen statt, Tiere werden gezeigt und vieles mehr.

Es werden immer Freiwillige gesucht die 4 Stunden arbeiten und dafür freien Eintritt sowie ein T-Shirt bekommen. Das klingt nach nem tollen Plan, also haben wir uns alle dazu gemeldet.

Ich habe am Freitag den „Joust“ beaufsichtigt; wer kennt es nicht aus der Show „American Gladiators“, wo man auf einem wackeligen Podest steht und einen gegenüber hat, den man mit einer weichen aber doch recht schweren Rolle vom Podest herunterbefördern muß. Das erinnert mich doch recht stark an meinen Job in der Ausbildung, wo ich solche Sachen beaufsichtigt habe (zumal nebenan ein „Bungee Run“ stand, welches wir auch hatten).

Die Aufgabe war recht einfach und man hatte auch genügend Pausen, aber Kinder tanzen einem ja gerne auf der Nase herum und hören einfach nicht darauf, was man sagt.

Am Samstag habe ich „Kids Carneval“ gemacht. Ich stand hinter einem Stand mit Ringe werfen (über Flaschenhälse) und dem „Potty Tiss“, bei dem man Bälle in ein Loch in einer Klobrille werfen muß. Ich habe Tickets eingesammelt und Preise vergeben. Dies war wesentlich anstrengender, den es war fast immer eine Schlange von kleinen Kindern da und ich hatte zwei Spiele, die ich tun mußte und die Ringe und Bälle liegen auf dem Boden hinter den Gerätschaften.

Alles in allem waren es zwei super Tage. Ich bin fast bis zum Schluß mit unserem französischem Pärchen und Holly aus Haines geblieben. Die Bands waren super, so viel Spaß in der Art hatte ich schon länger nicht mehr.

Southeast Alaska State Fair

I have been at a fair before in Australia. Especially for small towns it is the highlight of the year because this is sometimes the only time of the year something great is happening.

The fair takes places from Thursday to Sunday. Bands are playing, there are games to play and everybody can display their own craft, baking goods, photo or their best vegies. There are food stands, craft and clothes stands, fashion shows, plays and you can see different kind of animals and much more.

Wearable Art Show

They need a lot of volunteers who do different jobs for 4 hours at the fair. You get free entrance and a T-Shirt. I thought that is a good deal and sounds like a fun thing to do. So we all signed up.

I supervised the “Joust”. I have seen it at the TV Show „American Gladiators“. Two people standing on shaky platforms opposite to each other and you have a soft but quite heavy roll in your hand with that you try to pushed the other person off the platform. It reminds me of my first job back in Germany when I had also supervise those kind of stuff and doing face painting and lots of other things. We also had a “Bungee Run” which was right next to the Joust at the fair.

The job was pretty easy. I had several breaks but … man…, kids just don´t want to listen when you tell them not to do curtain things.

Saturday I did the „Kids Carneval“ which included “Ring Tossing” and the “Potty Toss” where you have to throw balls through a hole in a toilet seat. It was more exhausting because there was almost always a line of kids and I had to do two things. I also had to pick up the balls and rings from the ground mostly behind the game.

After all I had two awesome days. I stayed almost till the end with our French couple and my new friend Holly from Haines. The bands were great. I didn´t had that kind of fun for a longer time.

I am glad Holly talked me into that.
