Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island (dt.: Prinz-Edward-Insel) kurz PEI oder P.E.I. ist eine Insel im Atlantik sowie eine Provinz im Osten Kanadas. Prince Edward Island gehört zu den Seeprovinzen und ist flächenmäßig die kleinste Provinz des Landes. Benannt ist sie nach Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, dem Vater von Königin Victoria. Die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt ist Charlottetown mit etwa 35.000 Einwohnern. Die gesamte Insel hat etwa 145.000 Einwohner. Die Autorin Lucy Maud Montgomery lebte hier und schrieb 1908 das Kinderbuch „Anne of Green Gables“. Die Geschichte ist im englischsprachigen Raum etwa so bekannt wie Pippi Langstrumpf in Deutschland. Da Anne auf Green Gables das Lieblingsbuch der Schriftstellerin Astrid Lindgren war, ist Pippi Langstrumpf von der temperamentvollen rothaarigen Anne inspiriert.

 

The west

In Charlottetown habe ich einen Couchsurfer gefunden. Es gibt nur zwei Hostels, eines in der Hauptstadt und eines im Norden, wo ich dann später hin wollte. Im Endeffekt durfte ich aber beim Host so lange bleiben, wie ich wollte. Zwischendurch waren noch andere da, hatten alle eine nette Zeit da. Die ersten zwei Tage ist er mit mir die Insel erkunden gefahren, als er dann arbeiten mußte bin ich in mehreren Tagen die verschiedenen Küsten abgefahren sowie eine Tag für die Hauptstadt Charlottetown. Man kann sagen ich habe die Insel so ziemlich umrundet. Die Westküsten-Route war sehr lang, daher habe ich eine Nacht unterwegs gecampt. Die Insel ist super schön, man hat alles von weißen Sanddünen, rotem Sandstrand, Steilklippen, die Mitte ist hügelig und sehr grün, die Hauptstadt ist nett und kann man sie in einem halben Tag abklappern.

It is one of the three Maritime Provinces and is the smallest province in both land area and population. One of the islands informal names is "Birthplace of Confederation" referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, although PEI did not join Confederation until 1873, when it became the seventh Canadian province. The backbone of the economy is farming, as it produces 25% of Canada's potatoes. The capital and biggest City is Charlottetown with a population of about 35,000. The island has a population of about 145.000. The author Lucy Maud Montgomery lived her and wrote the bestselling children’s book “Anne of Green Gables”.

The east

I found a couchsurfer in Charlottetown. There are only two hostels in the whole province, one in the capital and one just a bit further north. I thought I stay there later but my host invited me to stay as long as I want. For a few days there were other couchsurfers too, we had a nice time. The first two days my host drove me around some parts of the island. When he had to work I explored the rest by myself. I drove pretty much everywhere along the coast. The west route was quite long so I camped overnight half way. You can say I circled pretty much the whole island. I also spent one day in the capital. PEI is stunning or splendid as Anne of Green Gables used to say all the time. You find everything here from white sand dunes and cliffs to red ocean beach. The center is hilly and green and the capital is nice to walk around and you can see everything in half a day.
