Maine, USA

Maine ist ein Bundesstaat der USA und Teil der Region Neuengland. Die Hauptstadt ist Augusta und die größte Stadt ist Portland. Die Herkunft des Namens ist unklar. Wahrscheinlich ist er nach der französischen Landschaft Maine benannt, möglicherweise ist der Name aber auch eine Kurzform von „Mainland“ („Festland“). Maine ist der US-Bundesstaat mit dem höchsten Waldanteil. Da mehr als 90 % der Landfläche unter anderem mit Kiefern bewachsen ist, lautet der Beiname des Staates „Pine Tree State“ („Kiefernstaat“).

Nach 13 besuchten US-Staaten ist dies nun mein letzter, jedenfalls für diesen Trip. Ich hatte nach Hostels in Maine gegoogelt und es gibt nur eines und auch noch ein sehr interessantes. Die mit einer Brücke verbundenen Insel „Deer Isle“ liegt an der Südküste etwa in der Mitte des Bundesstaates. Das „Deer Isle Hostel“ ($ 25 / € 19,30) ist ein Öko-Hostel; es gibt kein fließendes Wasser und keinen Kühlschrank. Es gibt aber Solarenergie und eine Küche mit Gasherd. Zum Abwaschen wird Wasser im Garten gepumpt, erwärmt und in Schüsseln gewaschen. Das Klo ist draussen; unterm Toilettensitz ist ein Eimer und nach seinem „Geschäft“ streut man Späne drüber. Auch die Dusche ist draussen, der Duschkopf ist eine Gießkanne und der Warmwassertank liegt unter einem Misthaufen; es kommt ziemlich heißes Wasser aus dem Schlauch. Abendessen ist inklusive man wird nur gebeten irgendetwas zum Essen mitzubringen, manchmal haben sie auch einen bestimmten Wunsch. Draussen wird dann zusammen gegessen. Ich habe sehr nette und interessante Menschen da kennengelernt, hauptsächlich aus Teilen der USA. Weil es mir so gut gefallen hat, bin ich gleichmal drei Nächte geblieben.

Stonington on Deer Isle

Was ich mir in Maine auch gerne ansehen wollte und mir auch etliche Male empfohlen wurde ist der Acadia Nationalpark. Es gibt zwei Nationalpark-Campingplätze, der dichtere teuere war ausgebucht , der andere hatte noch einen Platz frei. Das war meiner. Ich habe nur kurz eingescheckt ohne zum Zeltplatz zu fahren und bin dann wieder zurück um in den verbleibenden wenigen Stunden Lookouts zu besuchen, zu Mittag zu essen, den Ort zu besichtigen und kleine Wanderungen zu machen. Eine wunderschöne Ecke hier. Auch der Campingplatz war super. Es war nah bei den Waschräumen und beim Parkplatz, denn hier konnte man nicht mit dem Wagen ranfahren. Der Preis war nur $ 14 / € 11. Eigentlich kostet es noch $ 20 / € 15,50 Eintritt aber genau an dem Tag war der „National Park Tag“ und der Eintritt war frei. Am nächsten Morgen bin ich dann wieder zurück nach New Brunswick in Kanada.

The capital is Augusta and the largest city is Portland. Maine is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. With respect to crime rates, Maine is also often considered the safest state in the U.S.

After 13 US states this will be my last one at least for this trip. I checked google for hostels in Maine and only one came up and even a very interesting one. The “Deer Isle Hostel” ($ 25 / € 19.30) is located on a bridge accessed island in the mid of the south coast. It is an eco-hostel with solar power, hand-pumped water, a sawdust outhouse and outdoor shower with a watering can where the water tank is under a dunghill. The water out of the pipe is actually really hot. They have no fridge but a gas stove. They do a potluck dinner where you bring one food item and they make something out of it. You eat outside with everybody together. I met so many interesting and nice people, mostly from the U.S. I enjoyed it so much I stayed three nights.

 

Acadia National Park

I read about the Acadia National Park and some people recommended it as well so I went. There are two National Park campsites. The closer more expensive one was fully booked and the other one in the south had only one campsite. This was mine. I just check in without going to the site. I went back to spent the few hours in the park driving around, going to scenic lookouts, doing a hike and had lunch in a town.

It is a beautiful spot and also the campsite was a very good one. At this sites you can´t take your car right to the spot but it was very close to the road and bathroom. The price was only $ 14 / 11 €. Usually it cost plus $ 20 / € 15.50 entrance fee but it was “National Park Service Birthday” so it was free at that day. The next day I went back to New Brunswick in Canada.
