Ottawa

Ottawa ist die Hauptstadt Kanadas. Sie liegt im östlichen Teil der Provinz Ontario am Fluss Ottawa, unmittelbar an der Grenze zur Provinz Québec. Ottawa bedeutet „Händler“ in der Sprache der Algonkin, einem Volk, das zur Zeit der Besiedlung am Fluss Handel trieb. Am anderen Ufer des Flusses liegt die Zwillingsstadt Gatineau, Québec. Ottawa selbst zählt um die 900.000 Einwohner und ist damit die viertgrößte Stadt Kanadas. Die Bevölkerung ist zu 63 % englisch- und zu 15 % französischsprachig. Am 31. Dezember 1857 wurde Königin Victoria aufgefordert, eine Hauptstadt für die Provinz Kanada auszuwählen. Sie entschied sich für Ottawa. Die Wahl auf die Stadt dürfte gefallen sein, weil Ottawa zum einen an der Sprachgrenze lag, andererseits, im Gegensatz zum nahe an der Grenze zu den USA gelegenen Toronto, das vom Ontariosee aus – im erneuten Kriegsfall mit den Vereinigten Staaten – womöglich leicht angreifbar gewesen wäre, lag Ottawa weit im Hinterland.

 

Im Gefängnis - - - In jail

In Ottawa angekommen bin ich direkt ins Gefängnis – von dem Hostel hatte ich ja in New Hampshire gehört – und habe mir die Zellen angeguckt. Ich hatte die Wahl zwischen einem 8er Schlafsaal in einem langweilig aussehendem Raum oder eine Einzelzelle etwa 1 x 3 m groß. Das klang gut, nehm ich für $ 34 / € 24. Das Hostel war recht voll, ansonsten hätte man auch 4er Zellen bekommen können. Das Gefängnis wurde 1862 gebaut und 1972 von der Hostelorganisation aufgekauft. Im Preis ist ein reichhaltiges Frühstücksbuffet und eine Tour durchs Gefängnis enthalten.Es war eine super Erfahrung und nicht mal die extrem laute Musik von der Bar draussen konnte mich stören.

Über helpx hat sich der Siggi bei mir gemeldet, da er auch in den Osten Kanadas wollte. Wir waren im gleichen Hostel und haben auch die Hälfte der Tage zusammen verbracht. Farmers´Market, Museen, Gallerien, Geocaching, Chinatown, Parliament und durch die Stadt laufen waren auf dem Programm. Abends gibt es eine tolle Lightshow bei der das Parliamentsgebäude angestrahlt wird und viel historiches erzählt wird. Was ich auch hier gelernt habe ist, was alles in Kanada erfunden wurde: Telefon, IMAX, Eishockey-Torwart-Maske, Kayak, Trillerpfeife, Schneeschuhe, Schlitten, Trivial Pursuit, Basketball, Schneemobil, Farbroller, um nur ein einiges zu nennen. Ich habe drei Tage in der Hauptstadt verbracht und bin dann mit dem Siggi in die nächste Provinz Quebec.

Ottawa is the capital of Canada and the fourth largest city in the country. The city stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec. The name "Ottawa" is derived from the Algonquin word adawe, meaning "to trade". The city's population is about 900,000. On 31 December 1857, Queen Victoria was asked to choose a common capital for the Province of Canada, and she chose Ottawa. The Queen's advisers suggested she pick Ottawa for several reasons: Ottawa's position in the back country made it more defensible, while still allowing easy transportation over the Ottawa River. Ottawa was at a point nearly exactly midway between Toronto and Quebec City.

I arrived in Ottawa and went straight to prison. I already knew about this hostel from people in New Hampshire. I had a look at the rooms/cells. Because it was really full I only had the choice of an 8 bed dorm which was a bit boring looking room and a single cell. The size of the cell is only 1 x 3 m. Sounds good I thought so the single cell for $ 34 / € 24 it is. A great breakfast buffet is included in the price as well as a tour through the prison. They also have 4 bed cells. The jail was built in 1862 and was bought by “Hostelling International” in 1972. It was an awesome experience. Even the loud music from the outdoor bar which was on until late at night couldn´t bother me that much.

Through helpx German Siggi contacted me. He also wanted to travel further east. He stayed in this hostel as well and we spent half of the time together exploring the city. I visited several places like the Farmer´s Market, a gallery, a museum, the Parliament, did geocaching, and just walk through Ottawa. There was a great lightshow projected at the Parliament building where the history of the country was told. What I also learned in Ottawa what was invented by Canadians. Just to mention a few: telephone, IMAX, Goalie-Mask, whistle, kayak, show shoes, toboggan, Trivial Pursuit, Basketball or the paint roller. I spent three nights in the capital and took off together with Siggi towards the next Province Quebec.
