Haines ist eine Kleinstadt am nördlichen Ende der Chilkat-Halbinsel im Südosten Alaskas in den USA. Der Ort ist zugleich Verwaltungssitz und einzige Gemeinde des Haines Borough (Bezirk).Von Haines erreicht man per Straße die kanadische Provinz Yukon. Haines hat die größte Ansammlung von Weißkopfseeadlern (Bald Eagles).
Ein Teil von dem Walt Disney Film „Wolfsbut“ mit Klaus Maria Brandauer und Ethan Hawke wurde hier 1990 gedreht. Die TV-Serie „Goldrausch in Alaska“ die in Deutschland auf DMAX läuft wird gerade hier in der Nähe gefilmt.

Es gibt eine Internetseite www.helpx.net, wo man weltweit jemanden suchen kann, wo man ohne Bezahlung aber gegen Unterkunft, manchmal auch mit Verpflegung, arbeiten kann. Das können Farmen sein, Privatpersonen, Hotel/Hostels, Touristenattraktionen etc.. Man stellt einfach ein Profil ins Internet, wer man ist und wohin man reisen möchte. Nun kann man einen Ort suchen, wo man bleiben möchte oder ab und an wird man auch selber angeschrieben. Ich habe das einmal in Japan gemacht. In Alaska wurde ich dann von Tamsen angeschrieben. Ich habe sowieso so etwas in Alaska gesucht, also dachte ich, da will ich hin.

Ich kam mit der Fähre aus Juneau und wurde von Tamsen abgeholt. Sie wohnt 43 km von der Stadt entfernt in Richtung kanadischer Grenze, die nur etwa 21 km entfernt ist.

Sie hat ein kleines zweistöckiges Haus, in dem ich im oberem Stockwerk in einem großem Raum mit Doppelbett schlafe. Sie hat 3 kleine Hunde, zwei fette Katzen, 2 Ziegen (eine davon ziemlich anhänglich), 2 Gänse und 7 Enten. Der erste Eindruck war hervorragend and super ist auch, das es ein Auto gibt, den ich nutzen kann.

Alles in allen eine gute Voraussetzung, um eine nette Zeit zu haben.

Haines is located in Haines Borough, South East Alaska, United States. It is in the northern part of the Alaska Panhandle, near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Haines is connected through road to the Canadian Province Yukon.

Haines has the largest concentration of bald eagles in the world.

A part of Walt Disney's “White Fang” film, filmed in Haines in 1990. Also Haines takes place of the TV show “Gold Rush”.

There is the website www.helpx.net. Here you can look worldwide for people you give you accommodation sometimes also food and you work a bit. Mostly they are farms but you also find different accommodation, companies for tourist attractions or just private people who need help. You put your profile online you search for hosts or sometimes if you tell them your plans they write you. I did this one time in Japan. In Alaska Tamsen wrote me so I thought I will follow the invitation. I wanted to do it in Alaska anyway.

I came by ferry from Juneau. Tamsen was already waiting for me at the ferry terminal in Haines. She has a little farm about 43 kilometers (27 miles) from Haines towards the Canadian border which is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) away.

She has a two story house. I have a big room with a queen size bed upstairs.

She has 3 little dogs, 2 fat cats, 2 goats (one of them is extremely clinging), 2 geese and 7 ducks. My first impression was really great and a really good thing is that there is a pick-up truck to use.
