Helgoland

Helgoland, auch Deät Lun (Helgoländer Friesisch) genannt, ist eine Nordseeinsel in der Deutschen Bucht. Die ursprünglich größere Insel zerbrach 1721; seitdem existiert die als Düne bezeichnete Nebeninsel. Helgoland ist 48,5 km vom Festland entfernt und hat nur eine Fläche 4,2 km². Zur Einwohnerzahl gibt es unterschiedliche Angaben: Irgendwas um die 1.400. Die Inselgruppe Helgoland und Düne gehört seit 1890 zum deutschen Staatsgebiet und ist heute als amtsfreie Gemeinde Helgoland in den Kreis Pinneberg (Schleswig-Holstein) integriert. Für beide Inseln gelten Sonderregelungen: Die Gemeinde ist zwar Teil des deutschen Wirtschaftsgebiets, zählt aber weder zum Zollgebiet der Europäischen Union, noch werden deutsche Verbrauchsteuern erhoben. Nach Helgoland fahren vier Fähren aus unterschiedlichen Ort und fliegen kann man auch.

Auch wenn Helgoland zum Kreis Pinneberg gehört, wo ich aufgewachsen bin und nicht mal 1,5 Stunden zum Fährhafen entfernt ist, war ich noch nie da. Ist einfach zu dicht. Ich habe aber schon ewig gesagt, dass ich mal hin möchte. Als dann ein Kumpel geplant hat hinzufahren, um dort nach Geocaches zu suchen, habe ich mich schnell mit eingeladen. Perfekt. Meine Eltern haben unweit von Büsum, wo eine Fähre fährt ein Ferienhaus. Mein Vater hat uns mitgenommen und am Schiff abgesetzt. Die Überfahrt dauerte gut 2,5 Stunden. Wir haben uns in der billigsten Pension ein Zimmer für eine Nacht genommen und haben dann nach Ankunft auch sofort mit dem Geocachen begonnen. Die Insel ist klein, aber es man braucht schon die 1,5 Tage um alle zu finden.
Am nächsten Tag sind wir auf die Düne mit dem Boot und haben dort den Rest gefunden. Bis auf ein paar haben wir auch alle gefunden. Zeit zum shoppen war natürlich auch und abends ein paar Bierchen im typischen Lokal durfte nicht fehlen. Die Insel ist sehr schön, man kann ein bisschen wandern bzw. spazieren gehen, den Ort erkunden, es gibt einen sehr schönen Strand, man kann Kegelrobben sehen und Souvenirs kaufen. Wenn man dort nicht zum Geocachen hingeht wüsste ich auch nicht recht, was man am nächsten Tag machen sollte. Wer noch nie da war sollte mal hin, bevor die Insel untergeht. :-)

Heligoland (German: Helgoland) is a small German island in the North Sea. Heligoland is located 48.5 kilometres off the German coastline and consists of two islands. The natural connection was destroyed by a storm flood in 1721. Heligoland has a population of around 1,400. The island is the only German island not in the immediate vicinity of the mainland. You can reach Heligoland (didn´t know it is called like this in English) by ferry from four different ports or fly. Heligoland is now a holiday resort and enjoys a tax-exempt status, as it is part of the EU but excluded from the EU VAT area and customs union.

Also Heligoland is part of the county I grew up in and it is less than 1.5 hours to the port I have never been there. I said for a long time I wanna go and when a friend told me we will go there to do geocaching I invited myself to go with him. My parents own a holiday house quite close so my father took us with him and dropped us off at the harbour in the small town of Büsum. The crossing took about 2.5 hours. We chose the cheapest accommodation a small guesthouse. Soon after arrival we started searching for the geocaches. The island is very small but there are quite many caches to find some of them took several hours. You need about the 1.5 days we had.
The next day we crossed over the smaller island by boat and found also a few. Except for a few we found all at the end. Dinner and some beer in a local bar and some shopping and that was it with our short trip. The island is very beautiful. You can do light hiking; go for a walk, there is a beach; you can see grey seals, go through the nice village and do some shopping. If I wouldn´t be there for geocaching I did not know what else to do at the next day but it is really worth going there.
