Colombia

Kolumbien (amtlich República de Colombia) ist eine Republik im nördlichen Teil von Südamerika. Sie grenzt sowohl an den Pazifischen Ozean als auch an das Karibische Meer und auf dem Festland an Panama, Venezuela, Brasilien, Peru und Ecuador. Der Landesname ist von Christoph Kolumbus abgeleitet. Der Äquator verläuft durch Kolumbien.

Bogota
Bogotá ist die Hauptstadt Kolumbiens. Mit ihren 6,8 Millionen Einwohnern im eigentlichen Stadtgebiet ist Bogotá der größte städtische Ballungsraum Kolumbiens und außerdem eine der am schnellsten wachsenden Metropolen Südamerikas. Der Name Bogotá stammt von dem einheimischen Wort Bacatá ab. Dies war der Name der Hauptstadt der Zipa-Konföderation der Muisca-Zivilisation. 

Nachdem ich den Sommer auf Kreta verbracht habe und vier Wochen später schon wieder in die Wintersaion gehe, wollte ich erstmal einen besonderen Urlaub machen. Als ich damals in Kanada in Neufundland war habe ich eine Nacht Couchsurfing bei Ashley gemacht. Ihr Plan war nach Deutschland zu kommen, sie landete dann aber in Kolumbien und meinte, ich könnte ja mal vorbeikommen. Das habe ich mir nicht zweimal sagen lassen.
Ich wollte eh irgendwann mal nach Südamerika; kein bestimmtes Land. Ich habe dann bei einem Reiseveranstalter von dem ich schon vor längerem Gutes gehört habe und der auch sehr günstig ist, mal nachgeschaut, ob es geführte Touren in Kolumbien gibt, denn ganz alleine wollte ich da auch nicht hin. Und ja, es gibt zwei mögliche Touren. Als ich dann aber das Angebot bekam ab Anfang Dezember in Österreich zu arbeiten, blieb nur die kürzere 9-tägige Tour. Ich hab dann auch recht schnell gebucht. Ich bin erst einmal zwei Nächte alleine, da war der Flug am günstigsten. Im Anschluß der Tour bin ich dann die restlichen Tage bei Ashley. Am 12. November sollte es dann mit meiner Reise los gehen.

Anreise:
Einen Tag bevor ich die Reise antreten wollte erfuhr ich am Nachmittag das wegen Streiks der Flug ausfällt. Nach stundenlangen Versuchen mit dem Kundenservice zu telefonieren habe ich dann einen Alternativflug am frühen Morgen bekommen.
Ein Zwischenstopp in Paris; da konnte ich meine 20 Wörter französisch mal wieder trainieren - und ich war nach über 15 Stunden dann in Kolumbien. Meine 20 Wörter Spanisch musste ich dann auch aus meinen Gehirn ganz hinten rauskramen.
Flug war super, es gab viel und leckeres Essen und die Zeit verging auch wie im Fluge.
Nach der Ankunft nahm ich mir ein Taxi und der erste Spruch des Taxihelfers war auch "Vergiss auch nicht mein Trinkgeld", hätte ich mal kleineres Geld dabei gehabt, der hat viel zu viel von mir dann zwangsweise bekommen. Taxifahrt und Hostel waren etwas teuer als ich im Reiseführer gelesen habe, aber immer noch verhältnismäßig günstig.
Eigentlich hatte ich eine Couchsurferin gefunden, aber am letzten Tag hatte ich nach mehreren Mails nie wieder etwas von ihr gehört. Also mußte ich spontan sein.
Ich habe mich einfach zum erstbesten Hostel aus dem Lonely Planet-Reiseführer bringen lassen. Ein Bett im 10er-Schlafssal im "Cranky Croc Hostel" kostet 9,74 Euro. Die Taxifahrt von etwa 40 Minuten schlug mit 9,14 Euro zu Buche.
Kurz zum Supermarkt, diesen Text geschrieben und nach 24 Stunden nicht mehr als 2 Stunden insgesamt im Flugzeug geschlafen, testete ich mal das Bett und die Nachtruhe, denn heute spielte Kolumbien gegen Chile im Fußball; überall hört man es auf den Straßen.

Bogotá

2. Tag:
Ich hab 1A geschlafen. Früher als sonst bin ich aus dem Haus um mir die Stadt anzugucken. Ich war in mehreren Museen und hab mich dann mit einem Kolumbianer, der sich bei mir über Couchsurfing gemeldet hat, getroffen. Mir wurde die Stadt gezeigt, ich habe diverse Snacks ausprobiert und bin insgesamt 11,6 km gelatscht. Ich kann sagen, mir gefällst hier. Ich habe keine Personen gesehen, die mir unheimlich oder gewalttätig vorkam, so ein Bild haben ja viele von Kolumbien.

3. Tag:
Früh am Morgen bin ich aufgestanden, nachdem alle halbe Nase lang irgendjemand ins Zimmer kam, naja, Wochenende halt. Ich musste früh raus, da ich an einer Bike Tour teilnehmen wollte.
Wir waren nur zu zweit. Mit viel zu kleinen Rädern gings los. Wir sind raus aus der Innenstadt, durch Stadtteile wo man sonst wohl nie hinkommen würde. Wir fuhren viel an der großen Hauptstraße entlang; durch Mittelklasse- und höhere Klassen-Viertel.
Die jungen Guides waren super. Wir haben nett zusammen typisch gefrühstückt, sind durch den Botanischen Garten spaziert, der außerhalb liegt, und ich wohl sonst nicht hingekommen wäre. Wir sind durch die Universität gefahren und an hunderten von Sicherheitspersonal und Polizisten vorbeigefahren. Es gibt unglaublich viele Sicherheitskräfte in der Stadt.
Auf jeder Fußgängerbrücke stehen drei, an jeder Kreuzung ein Pärchen und überall wo man rein will werden die Taschen durchsucht; wird die Fahrradnummer aufgeschrieben oder muss seine Daten da lassen. Die Tour ging über 6 Stunden und wir sind 20 km gefahren.
Im Anschluss bin ich noch ins Nationalmuseum und auf das höchste Haus. Am späten Nachmittag bin ich dann in das neue Hostel umgezogen, dass mit zu der Tour gehört. Das "Casa Platypus" gefallt mir sehr, vor allen Dingen habe ich mein eigenes Zimmer mit Bad.

4. Tag: Tour Tag 1, Bogota (Einwohner: ca. 7 Mio.), 1 Nacht:
Abends haben sich dann alle zur Vorbesprechung getroffen. Da waren der Guide Andres, zwei Australierinnen und ein Deutscher. Wir sind auch noch zusammen essen gegangen.

5. und 6. Tag: Tour Tag 2 und 3 – Salento (Einwohner: ca. 4.000), 2 Nächte:
Am frühen Morgen ging es erst mit dem Taxi zum Busbahnhof und dann mit einem Luxus-Bus nach Armenia, das sind zwar nur 300 km, aber es hat wegen der Anden, die wir hoch und runter mussten dann doch 9 Stunden gedauert.
In Armenia sind wir dann in einem kleinen Bus und ins eine Stunde entfernte Salento. Das Hotel Real, in dem wir 2 Nächte waren, war super schön. Da die zwei Mädels zusammen reisen und ein Zimmer haben, und der Deutsche ein Mann ist, habe ich also das Glück immer ein Einzelzimmer zu haben. Denn eigentlich ist ein halbes Doppelzimmer im Preis mit drinnen.
Kurzes Abendessen an Strassenständen, ein Bierchen und das typische columbianische Spiel "Tejo" und der Tag war vorbei. Tejo ist ein Spiel bei dem man mit einem Stein in ein Feld mit Lehm auf Zettelchen schmeißt, die mit Schwarzpulver gefüllt sind und treffen muss, wenn das passiert gibt es eine Mini-Explosion. Bringt viel Spaß; haben wir gleich beide Abende gespielt.
Am nächsten Tag haben wir eine Tour auf einer kleinen Kaffeefarm gemacht, der von einem Engländer geführt wird. Wir haben danach dann noch eine Wanderung im Cocora Valley gemacht. Im Anschluss war noch Zeit im Ort zu shoppen.

Salento

 7. Tag: Tour Tag 4 – Popayan (Einwohner: ca. 250.000), 1 Nacht:
Am nächsten Morgen fuhren wir wieder nach Armenia und dann weiter ins sieben Stunden entfernte Popayan. Das Hotel Colonial war alt, aber nett. Nur kurz durch den Ort und zu Abend gegessen und müde fielen wir dann alle ins Bett.

8. und 9. Tag: Tour Tag 5 und 6 - San Agustín (Einwohner: 31.000), 2 Nächte:
Den Vormittag haben wir uns den Ort Popayan, der als „Die weiße Stadt“ bekannt ist, angeschaut. Ich war auf einem Aussichtspunkt und im Museum sowie ein wenig shoppen. Mittags fuhren wir dann nach San Agustín. Für die etwa 130 km haben wir wegen der Berge aber doch über 5 Stunden gebraucht.
Die „Hacienda Anacoana“ war mal was anderes, sie liegt außerhalb und ist sehr rustikal, aber gut eingerichtet. Im Hotel haben wir gegessen und damit war der Tag auch vorbei.

Am nächsten Morgen sind wir mit nem Jeep zum Archäologischen Park gefahren, eines der wichtigsten Ausgrabungsstätten Südamerikas. Hier sieht man Gräber mit Ihren Grabwächtern. In den verschiedenen Parks dieser Gegend kann man über 500 Statuen bewundern. Das ganze wird von einer unglaublich schönen Landschaft abgerundet. Am Nachmittag haben wir noch eine Jeeptour durchs Hinterland gemacht mit verschiedenen Stopps wie Wasserfallen, mehr Statuen und wir haben auch eine kleine Zuckerrohr-"Fabrik" besucht.

Abends haben wir dann mal was ganz anderes gemacht und sind zu einem Italiener zum Essen gegangen.

San Agustin

10. Tag: Tour Tag 7, Übernachtfahrt zurück nach Bogota, 1 Nacht
Die Fahrt mit dem Bus hat etwa 10 Stunden gedauert und verging schneller als erwartet.

11. Tag: Tour Tag 8, Bogota, 1 Nacht
Sehr früh am Morgen waren wir wieder im selben Hotel wie am Anfang in Bogota. Wir haben dann eine Stadtführung gemacht und hatten den Rest des Tages zu unserer freien Verfügung. Mit zwei neuen Tourteilnehmern bin ich dann auf den Berg „Monserrate“, mit der Zahnradbahn auf 3200 m hochgefahren. Hier oben gibt es eine Kirche und natürlich massenweise Tourikram. Im Anschluss ein wenig bummeln noch ein Museum und dann sind wir zum Abschluss nochmal alle Essen gegangen. Somit war die geführte Tour für mich vorbei.

Bogotá

12. Tag: Bogota, 1 Nacht

Ich bin auch in ein günstigeres Hostel (Casa Bellavista etwa 8 €) nicht weit weg von dem Hotel umgezogen. Am nächsten Tag habe ich mich wieder mit einem Teil der Gruppe getroffen und wir sind mit einem Privat-Fahrer zur Salz-Kathedrale gefahren, die liegt etwa eine Stunde nördlich der Hauptstadt. Die Kathedrale ist keine echte Kathedrale, es ist eine katholische Kirche in einem Bergwerksstollen. Es gibt nur zwei Salzkathedralen in der Welt, die andere befindet sich in Polen. War ein interessantes Erlebnis, vor allen Dingen, dass man unter Tage alles finden kann, von Geschäften, bis Cafés über Klos und Kunstausstellungen.

13. bis 16. Tag, Socorro, 3 Nächte

Am nächsten Tag bin ich mit dem Taxi zum Hotel wo Ashley wohnt. Sie ist ja der eigentliche Grund, warum ich überhaupt auf die Idee kam nach Kolumbien zu reisen. Sie wohnt etwa 6 Stunden Nord-Nord-Östlich von der Hauptstadt. Zusammen sind wir im Luxus-Bus in ihre derzeitge Heimatstadt gefahren. Sie lehrt Englisch hier für ein Jahr. Wir haben einen Ausflug in einen Nationalpark gemacht und sind nett was trinken gewesen. Alleine hab ich mir die Stadt angeschaut, die sehr schön ist, aber kaum Atrraktionen hat. Ich bin auch in die nächste Stadt nach „San Gil“ gefahren und hab mich nochmal mit der Gruppe zum Essen getroffen.

Mit dem Bus bin ich dann nach drei Tagen wieder in die Hauptstadt und von dort direkt weiter zum Flughafen, was ein extrem knappes Unterfangen war. Ich hatte schon einige Stunden extra eingeplant, aber trotzdem hat es nicht gereicht. In der Stadt stand der Bus im Stau, es gab Straßensperrungen wegen Baustellen und sonstigem; ich war schon sehr knapp am Busbahnhof, dort waren über hundert Menschen in der Schlange um ein Taxi zu bekommen. Hätte ich mich da hinten angestellt, hätte ich den Flieger definitiv verpasst. Ich ging nach vorne, fragte wer englisch sprechen könnte und mich vorlassen würde. Nett war die erste Person nicht. Ich fragte dann weiter, wer mich verstehen könnte und fand jemand die mich mich vorließ. Die Schlange bewegte sich immer noch nicht schnell genug. Vorne standen eine Gruppe Nonnen, da hab ich auf deren Mitleid gehofft und sie ließen mich auch vor. Ich bekam ein Taxi und erreichte den Schalter nur wenige Minuten bevor der geschlossen hätte. Puhhhhhh. Geschafft; ich konnte nach Hause fliegen. Ich war schon so richtig verzweifelt.

Socorro

Kolumbien ist ein schönes Land mit nettem Essen; etwas komplizierter zu reisen, aber ich war ja nie alleine. Die Menschen sind freundlich und hilfsbereit. Nach Südamerika würde ich noch einmal fahren.

The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. Independence from Spain was won in 1819. Since the 1960s, the country has suffered from an asymmetric low-intensity armed conflict, which escalated in the 1990s, but then decreased from 2000 onward. Colombia is ethnically diverse, its people descending from the original native inhabitants, Spanish colonists, Africans originally brought to the country as slaves, and 20th-century immigrants from Europe and the Middle East, all contributing to a diverse cultural heritage. The majority of the urban centres are located in the highlands of the Andes mountains, but Colombian territory also encompasses Amazon rainforest, tropical grassland and both Caribbean and Pacific coastlines.

Bogotá is the capital of Colombia, with a population of 7,8 Mill.  and has an altitute of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level.

After I spent the summer in Greece on Crete the winter season will start only four weeks later. Before the new job I wanted to go on holidays. Back then when I travelled through Canada I met Ashley in Newfoundland while doing couchsurfing at her place. Her plan was to work in Germany teaching English but she got an offer to work in Colombia for a year. She invited me to visit her. I though why not; never been to South America. It wasn´t really on top of my bucket list but hey always doing something new - I love it. One day I wanted to go anywhere in South America but no specified country. I already had an tour operator which was recommended to me. I checked the tours in Colombia because I didn´t wanna go there by myself.

There are two possible tours but when I got the offer to work in Austria I could only do the shorter 9 day tour. I booked quite soon. First I was two nights by myself until I joined the tour as at this day the flight was the cheapest. The last days I spent with Ashley. I started my journey at 12 November.

The journey

In the afternoon the day before I started my journey I got the message that my flight was cancelled because of a strike. After I tried to call the airline for hours I reached them and I got an alternate flight a little bit earlier with another airline.

I had a short stopover in Paris where I was able to remember the 30 words I know in French. After 15 hours I reached Colombia. The 30 something words I know in Spanish I really had to get out my brain. The flight was very well with good food. The time just flew by. After my arrival I took a taxi not without overtipping a helper who put my luggage into the vehicle as I didn´t had small change. First thing I learned – get small change before you get into a taxi. The ride and the hostel was a bit more expensive as in my guide mentioned but still relatively cheap compare to other countries.

I had actually organised to stay with a couchsurfer but after a few mails I have not heard back from her. So I had to be spontaneous.

I just took the first hostel in my guidebook. A bed in a 10-bed-dorm at the „Cranky Croc Hostel“ costs 9.74 Euros. I paid 9.14 Euros for the 40 minute taxi drive.

After going to a supermarket close by and writing this text I went to bed after maybe 2 hours sleep in the plane during the last 24 hours. There was a bit of noise everywhere on the streets because of a football match between Colombia and Chile.

Day 2

I had a good night sleep. I got up very early; unusual for my person. I did some sightseeing in the city; walked around and visited museums. Through couchsurfing I got in contact with an Colombian guy. I met him and he showed me more of his city. He was very helpful. He introduced me to the local food and we even explored areas he hasn´t seen before. In total I walked 11.6 km that day; quite a long walk. I like Bogotá. There is a lot of stuff to do and to see. I haven´t seen any people who looked dangerous or where you have to be careful. This is the picture most people have from this country.

Day 3

Again early in the morning I got up to join a bike tour. We left the city center and went to the suburbs I would probably never go. We drove along a main street through middle class and higher class quarters. The young guides were great. We ate a typical breakfast together and walked through the botanical garden which I was interested in anyway but it is located out of the center. We went to the university and passed hundreds of security guards and police staff. There are everywhere. At every footbridge there are a few and on every corner you can see a couple of them. When you wanna enter the university grounds or some buildings they will check your ID and we even had to give them our bicycle numbers. The tour was about 6 hours and we drove 20 km. It was great.

Afterwards I visited the National Museum and got up the highest buiding for a fantastic view over the city.

Late afternoon I moved to the hotel „Casa Platypus“ which was included in the group tour. It is a very nice accommodation above all I had my own room with a bathroom.

Day 4

Tour day 1 - Bogotá (pop. around 7 million); 1 night

In the evening we had a preliminary meeting. The group that was our guide Andres; two Australians and one German guy. After the talk we went out for dinner in a nice restaurant.

Day 5 and 6

Tour day 2 and 3 – Salento (pop. around 4,000); 2 nights

Early morning we took a taxi to the bus station and then with a luxury bus to the town of Armenia. It was only 300 km but because of the mountains „The Andes“ it took 9 hours.

In Armenia we changed to a smaller bus and drove another hour to Salento. We stayed two nights in the Hotel „Real“. It was very nice. Usually you have a half double room but because the two girls are sharing a room and there is only one other man I was lucky enough to have my own private room.

We had street food dinner and some beers. We also played the traditional throwing game „Tejo“. You throw a round metal thingy into a clay square where gunpowder placed in paper triangles. You try to get an explosion to get points or hit the middle spot surrounded by a metal ring. It is a lot of fun. We played both nights.

The next day we went to a little coffee farm owned by an English guy. Afterwards we did a hike in the beautiful Cocora Valley. Late afternoon we had time for a little bit of shopping.

Day 7

Tour day 4 – Popayan (pop. around 250,000); 1 night

The next morning we left back to Armenia and seven hours later we reached Popayan. The Hotel Colonial is simple but nice. We walked through the city and had dinner. That was pretty much it.

Day 8 and 9

Tour day 5 and 6 – San Agustín (pop. around 31,000); 2 nights

Until lunch we had time to explore the town of Salento. I walked to a viewing point and checked out a museum and did a bit souvenir shopping. Then we took the bus to San Agustín. It was only 130 km but because of the Andes it took us about five hours. We stayed at the Hacienda Anacoana. The rustic hotel is located out of town. The rooms are great. I had a huge one. We ate at the hotel because it was late.

The next morning we drove to the archeological park. The UNESCO world heritage site contains the largest collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in Latin America and is considered the world's largest necropolis. At the different parks you see over 500 graves with their tomb guards. It is surrounded by a beautiful landscape. In the afternoon we did a jeep tour through the hinterland with several stops at waterfalls and more statues. We also visit a small sugar cane „factory“.

For dinner we had something different; we went to an Italian restaurant.

Day 10

Tour day 7 – Overnight bus trip to Bogotá; 1 night
The ride took us about 10 hours but the time went by faster than I thought it would be.

Day 11
Tour day 8 – Bogotá; 1 night
Very early in the morning we were back in the same hotel as before. We did a city walking  tour. The rest of day was free time. The tour kept going but for me I only did the first nine days. With two of the new people who joined the group I went up the hill „Monserrate“. With a rack railway we drove up to 3,200 m. There is a church on top and many many souvenir stalls. Of course the view is great. Back down I did a bit of window shopping and visited a museum. For dinner we all went together. This was it; the tour was over for me.

Day 12 – Bogotá; 1 night
I changed the accommodation again to save some money. The „Casa Bellavista (about 8 €) is not far away and good enough for one night. It is quite noisy as there are not really walls inside but it looked better then others I had checked out.
The next day I caught up with part of the group to visit the salt cathedral. It is about one hour up north and we got a good deal for a private driver through our tour leader. It isn´t a real cathedral; it is a catholic church inside a mining tunnel. There are only two salt cathedrals in the world. The other one you find in Poland. It was an interesting experience; above all you find everything underground even shops, cafés, toilets and art exhibitions.

Day 13 till 16 – Socorro; 3 nights
The following day I took a taxi to the hotel where Ashley stayed. She was the reason why I  had the idea to come to Colombia. She lives about 6 hours north east from the capital. Together we took a luxury bus and went back to her town. She was teaching English for one year. We took a trip to a National Park and went out for some drinks and meeting her friends. I explored the town on my own as well. One day I drove the „San Gil“ to met up with the group for dinner. The town is great for fun activities but nothing for shopping so I walked around until I met the people.
From Socorro I took the bus back to Bogotá straight to the airport. It was a really close call. I planned some extra hours but the bus was late because of construction and traffic jam. When I arrived at the bus terminal I was already very late. There was an extrem long queue at the taxi stand. If I would had queued up at the end I would not have made it. I ask somebody at the front to jump the line but he refused so I asked a woman in the line to help me out and she did but still the queue moved very slowly. I would have not made the flight. Then I saw some nuns and hoped for their mercy. They were really nice and I could catch a taxi pretty soon. Still I was so late that five minutes after my arrivel the check-in would have been closed. I just made it. Thank you lord. I was so desperate.

Socorro

Colombia is a very beautiful country with nice food. It is a bit more complicated to travel but I was never alone. The people are very nice and helpful. Not many people speak English. I would visit South America again.

October

Die letzten 4 Wochen stehen nun an. Es sind wieder Familienwochen, diesmal dürfen aber auch Gäste ohne Kinder anreisen. Wir haben zwei neue Kinderteamer bekommen und ich habe die letzte Mountainbike-Einführungstour mitgemacht, welches auch meine erste auf Kreta war. Das hat mir aber auch gereicht.

Mit den Kollegen sind wir auf eine abenteuerliche Tour durch die Patsos-Schlucht gelaufen, bei der wir zwischendrinnen uns unseren Schuhen raus mussten und durch schlammiges Wasser gewatet sind. Am Ende sollte es laut Internet möglich sein, zur Straße zur laufen und zum Eingang zurückzutrampen. Das hat aber nicht ganz so gut funktioniert. Wir kamen in einer Baugrubengegend raus und mussten erstmal ewig zur Strasse laufen; auf dem Weg wurden wir dann doch für etwa zwei Kilometer mitgenommen, mußten dann aber doch noch über 30 Minuten zurück zum Auto laufen. War eine super Wanderung, bis auf den Teil an der Straße. ;-)

Patsos

Ende Oktober sind die letzten Gäste gefahren und eine Woche später am 4. November gings dann für mich nach Hause. Es war eine tolle Saison.

----- E N G L I S H -----

The last four weeks had started. Again we had family weeks but this time also everybody else could come. We got two new co-workers for the kids. I did the last beginner mountain bike tour which was also my first one on Crete. It was definitely enough for me.

With co-workers I went hiking through another gorge (Patsos Gorge). At one spot we had to take off our shoes and walked through muddy water. I read in the internet that it is easy to hitchhik at the end of the gorge but surprisingly we ended up not on the road, we found each other in the middle of a construction pit. We had to walk for a while to the road. Fortunately a pick-up picked us up - :-) - but for just about two kilometers. We still had to walk another 30 minutes or so to reach the entrance where our car was parked. It was a great hike through the gorge even some adventures were included.

End of October our last guest were gone and about a week later I flew home at 4 November. It was an awesome season.

Im September waren nicht ganz so viele Gäste, aber dafür blieben die Gäste umso länger an der Bar. Wenn die Rasensprenger schon nachts angingen, weiß man es ist spät und wenn die ersten schon wieder ausgehen, weiß man, es ist wirklich spät. Mein Rekord liegt bei 5 Uhr morgens, und sogar mit einigen Gästen, nicht nur einen oder zwei. 3 Uhr war auch keine Seltenheit. Es war aber trotzdem immer sehr nett, aber die Wochen schlauchten schon, daher war ich heilfroh als ich dann eine Barhilfe bekam. Zunächst war er allerdings gedacht für nur ein paar Stunden; er sollte noch in allen anderen Bereichen helfen. Da meine Stunden dadurch aber nicht reduziert wurden, sondern nur die anderen Teamer nicht mehr an die Bar mussten, wurde er mehr an der Bar einsetzt und ich hatte endlich eine normale Stundenanzahl.

Auch Maria, die Köchin bekam eine holländische Praktikanten für vier Wochen, die ihr die Arbeit erleichterte.

Ich habe mit Kollegen nochmal ein Auto gebucht und da das Wetter nicht so dolle war, sind wir nur in die nicht weit gelegene Stadt Georgiospolis und zum Kournas See. Wir fuhren noch mal gemeinsam nach Rethymno und ich habe mit den Gästen eine weitere Schlucht (Aradena) durchquert.

Der September war wieder erlebnisreich.

There weren´t that many guests in September but the few stayed even longer up. You realize it is late when the sprinklers turn on end and you know it is even later when they turn off again. 5 am was my record and 3 am was quite often the time I could knock off. There were quite a lot of people every day at my bar. It was a nice time but in the last weeks I was a bit exhausted. I was happy when we got an extra team member to help us all out. Unfortunately he was only a few hours at the bar so the only help was that the others don´t have to help me out. It didn´t change anything about my long hours. Later he worked more hours at the bar so finally I could work a few hours less and I had normal hours.

Also our chef Maria got some help. A dutch lady did an internship for four weeks in the kitchen.

One day I rented a car with my co-workers. The weather was, well, not summer-like so we just visit the town of Georgiospolis and the Kournas Lake. Most of us visit Rethymno together and I also walked thorugh another big gorge (Aradena).

September was a month were a lot of thing were going on.

Chania

Im Juli und August hatten wir dann Familienwochen, im Juli waren es ausschließlich Familien, im August konnten auch welche ohne Kinder buchen. Da in diesen zwei Monaten das Haus häufig doppelt so voll ist als sonst, habe ich für die Zeit ein Barhilfe bekommen. Sie war ganz neu bei Frosch, aber war TOP. Sie war eine super Hilfe. Außerdem ist für die Zeit unsere Wanderguidin nach Österreich und es kam eine, die ich aber schon aus Davos kannte. In den zwei Monaten waren auch fünf verschiedene Kinder-Teamer da, immer drei zur Zeit.

Wir haben viel miteinander unternommen. Mit den Kindern bin ich zusammen in den Wasserrutschenpark und ich habe die größte Attraktion Kretas durchlaufen, die Samaria-Schlucht sowie weitere Wanderungen gemacht. Ich habe außerdem noch weitere Traumstrände besucht und war wieder in den Großstädten Chania und Rethymno. Die zwei Monate gingen sehr schnell vorbei. Es war sehr schön, ich habe weniger gearbeitet, da auch die Gäste sehr früh ins Bett sind, aber ich war auch heilfroh, dass als die Kinder wieder weg waren, auf dem Hotelgelände endlich wieder Ruhe eingekehrt war. Denn mein Fenster führt zum Garten und Pool hin, das war schon sehr lebendlich da draussen. Nur schade, dass die netten Teamer alle weg sind, schön aber, dass unsere Wanderguidin wieder zurück kam.

„Family Weeks“

Samaria

In July and August we had Family weeks which means in July you can only book if you have kids; in August everyone can book. Because with kids there are many more guests in the hotel I got help at the bar. She never worked for this company or at a bar but fortunately she was brilliant. Our hiking guide went to Austria and another girl came. I already knew her from Switzerland. During the two month we had five different guys and girls to take care of the kids; always three at a time.

We spent a lot of time together. With the kids I also went to the waterpark and walked though Cretes biggest attraction the “Samaria Gorge”. I visit some fantastic beaches and been to the cities Chania and Rethymno. The time just flew by. It was a great time because I had less work as the guests went to bed early. Still I was kinda glad when the kids were gone because it was quiet in the hotel and the garden with the pool. My room is right in the middle of the noise. I was sad that our nice team is gone and happy at the same time that our hiking hike came back.

East

Der Osten

Ende Juni war mein Großonkel auch auf Kreta, wie jedes Jahr verbringt er hier ein paar Wochen. Er wohnte im Osten etwa eine halbe Stunde hinter der Hauptstadt Heraklion in Analipsi.

Ich habe mir ein Auto gemietet und war in nur etwa 2,5 Stunden da. Wir haben eine Runde auf der Lassithi-Hochebene gemacht, waren in Tavernen und sind durch den Ballermann Kretas gefahren und spazieren gegangen. Abends bin ich dann wieder zurück gefahren. Habe einen netten Tag verbracht.

Ich hatte das Auto noch am nächsten Tag, daher bin ich den exzellenten Botanischen Garten bei Chania gefahren. Ich habe schon so viele überall auf der Welt besucht und war richtig beeindruckt; dieser Garten gehört zu meinen TOP 5. Ich bin dann noch durch die wunderschöne Landschafts Kretas gefahren bevor ich am Nachmittag wieder arbeiten mußte.

The East

End of June my granduncle spent some time on Crete like every year. He always stays in the East about 30 minutes further from the capital Heraklion.

I rented a car and arrived after about 2.5 hours. We took a road trip; stopped in taverns; drove through the party town which looked totally different than the towns in the West. I went back home the same evening. I had a very nice day.

I still had the car for another day so I visited the fantastic Botanical Garden. I have seen so many all over the world. I was really impressed; this one is one of my TOP 5. Afterwards I drove through beautiful areas of Crete until I was back to work in the afternoon.

Endlich Besuch

Nach etwa fünf Wochen habe ich dann auch schon Besuch bekommen. Denise kenne ich, als ich 2010 als Reiseleitung auf der griechischen Insel Thassos gearbeitet habe; ihre Freundin Fina kam auch da zu Besuch. Eine Woche haben sie mich besucht und wir hatten viel Spaß. Leider hatten wir ein paar Regentage, aber gesehen haben wir doch viel. Wir hatten für 4 Tage ein Auto und haben mehrere Traumstrände abgefahren und haben auch einiges vom Landesinneren gesehen. Etwa ein Drittel Kretas haben wir ganz gut erkunden können. Da ich meist um 15:30 startbereit für die Arbeit sein mußte, sind wir recht früh los. Am Montag fange ich erst um 19 h an, da hatten wir dann mehr Zeit und Donnerstag habe ich ja frei. Wir haben viel im Pool geplanscht und sie haben wir abends Gesellschaft an der Bar geleistet und auch super mitgeholfen. Eine tolle Woche. Liebe Freunde kommt mich besuchen und habt auch eine schöne Zeit!!!!

I got visitors

After about five weeks working on Crete I got visitors. I met Denise while we were reps on the Greek island of Thassos in 2010. Her friend Fina visited her there too. They stayed one week and we had a lot of fun. Unfortunately we had a few days of rain but we have still seen many places. We rented a car for four days and drove to a couple of amazing beaches. We also have driven inland quite a bit. I would say we covered about a third of Crete pretty well. I usually have to be ready for work at 3.30 pm. Only on Monday I start at 7 pm so we had more time as well as on Thursday on my day off. We spent some time in the pool. Also they gave me company in the evening while I was working behind the bar and they even helped me making drinks. It was an awesome week. Dear friends please come and visit me and have a great time too.

Mein Leben in Almyrida auf Kreta

Unser Programm welches sich etwa alle 2 Wochen ähnlich wiederholt besteht aus etwa 10 verschiedenen geführte Wanderungen, welche ich bis auf eine schon alle gemacht habe, sowie aus etwa geführte 10 Mountainbiketouren, von denen ich noch keine gemacht habe – wer mich kennt, weiß das die Berge hochfahren nicht mein Ding ist.

Wir haben außerdem Kajaktouren und verschiedene Workouts, Stress&Relax, Bauch-Beine-Po, Joggen und Aquafit oder auch mal Spiel wie KUBB (Wikingerschach), Mölkky, Kickern oder Tischtennis. Einiges habe ich mitgemacht – natürlich aber nicht das Joggen.:-)

Almyrida

Jeden Abend gibt es ein griechisches Buffet und ich kann euch sagen unsere griechische Köchin hat es drauf, es schmeckt wie in den Tavernen.

Jeden Donnerstag habe ich frei und da fahren die Gäste abends abwechselnd in die zweitgrößte Stadt Chania oder in die drittgrößte Stadt Rethymno, denn auch die Köchin hat dann frei.

Im Mai und Juni sowie von September haben wir Classic-Wochen, d.h. Erwachsene.

Die ersten 2 Monate lief alles top; kann mich nicht beschweren.

My life in Almyrida on Crete

Our program changes biweekly. We offer about 10 different guided hiking tours and guided mountain bike trips. I accompanied already nine hikes but no mountain bike tours – yet…..maybe. Mountain biking is just not my thing; too many hills. We also do kayaking tours and different kind of workout as well as games like foosball or table tennis.

Every evening we have a Greek buffet made by our awesome Greek cook. Her food tastes like in the taverns. Every Thursday is hers and also my day off and we offer an evening trip to the second (Chania) and third largest city (Rethymno) on Crete.

In May and June as well as September we have ´classic weeks´ which means there are only adults.

The first two month was great. I cannot complain at all.

Griechenland, Kreta

Ich wollte schon länger wieder in dieses tolle Land, mit den überaus netten Menschen und dem super leckerem Essen. Ich war 2010 und 2011 für zwei Sommersaisons als Reiseleiterin auf zwei Inseln im Norden des Landes. Als ich meinem Arbeitgeber gefragt habe, ob es einen Job am Meer gibt und ich Kreta als Angebot bekam, dachte ich. "Ja, mach ich". Nach dem Winter in der Schweiz und den nur drei Wochen dazwischen bin ich nun wieder für FROSCH als Barkeeperin tätig, diesmal für mehr als sechs Monate bis Anfang November. Am 28. April gings dann los.

Almyrida Beach

Ich war als erste vor Ort im Sportclub Dimitra in Almyrida an der Nordküste im Westen der Insel. Die erste Nacht war ich ganz alleine da, der Rest des Teams, eine Destinationsleiterin, ein Mountainbike-Guide und eine Wanderguide“in“ kamen am Nachmittag des nächsten Tages. Ich habe auch bereits das griechische Küchen- und Housekeeping-Team kennengelernt. Alle waren mir sofort sympatisch.

Das Hotel, die Anlage und mein Zimmer im Haus sind super. Der Sandstrand des kleinen Ortes liegt nur wenige Minuten entfernt. Im Ort bekommt man soweit alles was man benötigt.

Wir hatten eine Woche zur Vorbereitung. Die Poolbar, mein Arbeitsplatz, ist geräumig und hat genügend Platz. Klingt alles soweit wehr vielversprechend.

Arrival on Crete

After my two seasons as a rep on two islands in Northern Greece in 2011 and 2012 I always wanted to go back to this wonderful country with its lovely people and its great food. When I ask my employer if there are any jobs for me near the sea and I got the offer "Crete" I thought "Ya, I will do that." After I used to work in Switzerland last winter I had only three week until my job started. Again I am working as a bartender for the company “FROSCH”. This time I will be on Crete for more than six month until beginning of November. I left 28 April.

Sportclub Dimitra

I was the first one who arrived in the Sportclub Dimitra in the small town of Almyrida. It is located on the north coast in the western part of the island. I spent the first night all by myself in the hotel. The rest of the team arrived the next afternoon. There is the manager, a mountain bike guide and a hiking guide. So we are there girls and one guy. I already met the Greek team who is responsible for the cooking, service and housekeeping. There are all very friendly.

The hotel, the complex and my room inside the hotel are great. The sandy beach is located just a couple of minutes away from the hotel. You get everything you needed in this small town.

We had one week for preparation before the first guests arrived. My workplace is the pool bar which is very spacious is perfect. Everything seems perfect.

4 countries in 2 weeks

Durch 4 Länder in 2 Wochen

Nach der Wintersaison in Davos hatte ich etwa 3 Wochen Zeit bis zur Sommersaison. Da wollte ich ein paar Bekannte besuchen und dabei ein bisschen mehr von Deutschland und Umgebung kennen lernen. Zuerst bin ich für eine Nacht nach Berlin gefahren, dort wohnt eine mit der ich in Kanada zusammen gearbeitet habe. Anschließend bin ich nach Leipzig mit einem Abstecher durch den Spreewald, wo ich noch nie war. Da ich Leipzig noch nicht kannte, bin ich gleich zwei Nächte geblieben um Sightseeing zu machen. Ich war unter anderem im Leipziger Zoo, welcher top war. Ich habe bei einer gewohnt mit der ich auch in Kanada gearbeitet habe.

Wernigerode

Nächster Stop war für zwei Tage im Harz in Wernigerode zu Besuch bei einer Kollegin mit der ich erst kürzlich in der Schweiz gearbeitet habe. Wir sind wandern gegangen und ich habe dann noch eine weitere Kollegin von FROSCH (meinem Arbeitgeber) getroffen; wir haben 2012/13 in Italien zusammen gearbeitet

Weiter gings nach Münster – mit kurzen Stopps in Goslar und Hameln – denn in Münster findet die Teamer-Abschlußparty von Frosch statt. Ich habe mich in einem Hostel (Sleep Station, 23 € Zweibettzimmer) eingemietet und viele Bekannte wieder getroffen.

 

Spreewald

Nach Münster fuhr ich weiter gen Ruhrgebiet mit Halt in Marl, um dort mit nem Pärchen, die ich in der Schweiz kennengelernt habe, mich zum Mittagessen zu treffen; dafür sind wir nach Recklinghausen gefahren.

Ziel für den Tag war Düsseldorf, auch hier war ich noch nie, wie auch in den vorherigen beiden Städten. Hier habe ich jemand getroffen, die ich am längsten nicht gesehen habe; wir haben uns in Australien kennengelernt, das war 2007. Perfekt war, das an dem Tag die „Lange Nacht der Museen“ in Düsseldorf, wo ich – wenn ich da bin in Hamburg immer hingehe. Desweiteren haben wir uns in Essen den Zeche Zollverein angeschaut sowie den Zoo in Gelsenkirchen.

Luxembourg

Ich war noch nie in Luxemburg: wollte aber schon länger dahin und schauen, wie es dort aussieht. Ich hatte gehört, es wäre ein schönes Land. Von Düsseldorf war es nicht mehr weit; nur etwa 2,5 Stunden und schon war ich in der Hauptstadt wo ich mir ein Bett in der einzigen Jugendherberge (€ 21,65) reserviert hatte. Eine nette Unterkunft am Rande der Stadt. In den zwei halben Tagen habe ich einen guten Überblick über die Stadt, die Sehenswürdigkeiten und die Museen bekommen. Mir hat es hier richtig gut gefallen.

Am nächsten Tag fuhr ich mittags weiter gen Norden; ich habe mehrere Orte, Schlösser und Burgen besucht sowie eine Wanderung gemacht. Übernachtet habe ich dann nur 48 km weiter nordöstlich von der Hauptstadt in der Jugendherberge in Vianden (€ 19,20). Luxemburg ist ein wirklich wunderschönes Land, ich kann es nur empfehlen. Im Anschluss bin ich am frühen Morgen Richtung Belgien gefahren.

Das Königreich Belgien liegt an der Nordsee und grenzt an die Niederlande, Deutschland, Luxemburg und Frankreich. Belgien mit ihrer Hauptstadt Brüssel zählt rund elf Millionen Einwohner. Belgien ist eine konstitutionelle Erbmonarchie. Der Norden des Landes mit den Flamen ist niederländisches, der Süden mit den Wallonen französisches Sprachgebiet. Brüssel ist gemischtsprachig. Im Osten sind Hochdeutsch und westmitteldeutsche Mundarten verbreitet.

Auch in Belgien besuche ich wieder jemanden. Wir haben zusammen in Kanada im Housekeeping in Jasper gearbeitet. Seit ich den Ort verlassen habe, habe ich schon einige meiner Ex-Kolleginnen wiedergesehen. Nach etwa 3 Stunden war ich in Hasselt im Osten von Belgien etwa 30 km von der Niederländischen Grenze entfernt. Wir sind ein wenig wanderen gegangen, hatten Spaß im Freilichtmuseum und haben uns ihre Stadt Hasselt angesehen. Es war toll sie wiederzusehen.

Mein nächster Stop war wieder in Deutschland. Aus Zeitgründen bin ich auf den schnellsten Weg durch die Niederlande nach Xanten gefahren. Schon seit vielen Jahren hatte ich von der römischen Ausgrabungsstätte in Xanten gehört, nun war ich in der Nähe und bin mal schnell vorbeigefahren. Von Belgien war ich in 2,5 Stunden da. Es war interessant, allerdings hatte ich gehofft mehr zu sehen, als wirklich da war.

Xanten

Ich wollte noch eine Nacht entweder in den Niederlanden oder in Deutschland übernachten, das war aber gar nicht so einfach, entweder waren sie ausgebucht, es gab es keine Jugendherbergen oder sie waren zu weit weg, denn ich wollte nicht länger als in ein paar Stunden wieder zuhause sein. Ich habe dann eine Jugendherberge (€ 27,00) in Bremerhaven an der Nordsee gefunden. Als ich in der Stadt ankam konnte ich mich auch nicht erinnern, jemals hier gewesen zu sein und wenn war es lange lange her. Das Wetter war typisch nordisch, bewölkt und regnerisch und kühl. Ich war am nächsten Morgen so früh in der Stadt, dass noch keine Sehenswürdigkeit auf hatte. Viele Attraktionen sind am Hafen, nach etwas Geocaching bin ich ins Klimahaus und habe mir die Umgebung angesehen. Vorm Mittag bin ich bereits wieder nach Hause gefahren.

Es war eine toller Trip mit dem Auto durch den Norden Europas. Ich war in vielen Ecken wo ich noch nie war und habe tolle Leute wieder getroffen. Die Zeit war wie immer viel zu kurz, so eine Fahrt möchte ich auf jeden Fall noch einmal machen und mehr von meinem Land und auch Kontinent kennen lernen. Warum immer weit weg fahren, wenn so viel vor der Tür zu sehen ist.

2-week car trip

After the winter season in Switzerland in Davos I had three weeks until the summer season started. I wanted to visit some acquaintances and see more of Germany and the surroundings. My first stop was Berlin where I visited a former co-worker I used to work with in Canada; in two jobs actually. After The capital I drove to Leipzig with a detour through the region “Spreewald”. Because I haven´t really been to Leipzig I stayed two nights with a girl I also used to know from work in Canada. I did a lot of sightseeing with the highlight of the fantastic zoo.

Next stop was the town of „Wernigerode“ near the “Harz National Park” with its highest mountain range in Northern Germany. Here I met two co-workers from FROSCH my German employer I am working with the last years.

Goslar

The next day I drove to the town of “Münster” after I stopped in two other towns. In Münster there was an employee party. I stayed in a nice hostel (Sleep Station 23 € in a twin room) and met many co-workers.

Afterwards I drove further south with a lunch break with people I met last winter. My destination for the day was Düsseldorf. I have never been here. I stayed with a woman I used to work with in Australia in 2007. I was there at a perfect timing as the same day was the event “Night of the museums”. At this event you visit many museums in the evening / night and there is only one entrance price for all and there is a free bus transfer included. I have been going to this event in Hamburg many times. We also visit The “Zeche Zollverein” a former mine as well as the zoo in the city of Gelsenkirchen.

I have never been to Luxembourg but always wanna to go there. It is supposed to be a beautiful country. It is not too far away from Düsseldorf. It took me about 2.5 hours to be in the capital. I booked a bed in the only hostel (€ 21.65); a nice accommodation at the edge of the city. I had a really good look around in two half days. I have seen some sights and museums. I enjoyed the city, it is beautiful there.

Clarvaux, Luxembourg

The next day around lunchtime I drove towards north. I passed though some towns and villages and visited a couple of castle and did a little hiking tour. I stayed in the hostel in Vianden (19.20 €) which is located just 48 km north of the capital. Luxembourg is a country with a stunning landscape and pretty towns. I can totally recommend going there. Afterwards I reached Belgium.

In Belgium I also visited somebody; we were co-workers in Jasper, Canada as well. Since I left Jasper I have seen a few of my former co-workers. It took me about 3 hours and I arrived in Hasselt a town in Eastern Belgium about 30 km of the border of the Netherlands. We went on a little hike; we had fun at an open-air museum and visit the city center. It was great to see her again.

At my next stop I was back in Germany. Because of lack of time I just drove quickly through the Netherlands on the quickest way to Xanten. For many years I was interested to visit the archeological excavation from the Roman period. Now I was close enough so I dropped by. It took me 2.5 hours from Belgium. It was interesting but I expected a little more to see.

I wanted to spend another night either in the Netherlands or in Germany before I head home. It was a bit difficult as either the hostels were booked out; too far off my route or there were none in this area I wanted to visit. Finally I found one in the town of “Bremerhaven” at the North Sea. When I arrived I realized that I don´t remember having ever been there if it was so it was when I was a little girl. I found a hostel which had a single room for € 27.00. The weather was typical Northern German; it was drizzling, cloudy and chilly. I was so early in the city the next morning that everything was still closed. Many of the attractions are at the harbor. After a bit of geocaching I went to the “Klimahaus” (Climate house) where you can experience a journey through different climatic regions of the world. I also had a quick look around and head back home afterwards even before lunchtime.

It was an awesome trip with the car through Northern Europe. I have been to regions I haven´t been before and I got together with people I haven´t seen for sometimes quite a while. The time was of course too short. I would love to do this kind of trip again. I wanna see more of the country and continent I am living in. You don´t have to go far to see beautiful spots, there are right here around me.

Bremerhaven

Chur

hur ist der Hauptort des Schweizer Kantons Graubünden. Sie hat etwa 37.000 Einwohner und gilt als älteste Stadt der Schweiz. Der Name Chur wird vom keltischen kora, koria abgeleitet, was so viel heisst wie Stamm oder Sippe. Im lokalen Dialekt wird der Name als [ˈkʰuːr] ausgesprochen, sonst in der Schweiz überregional [ˈxuːr].

Altstadt - - - Old town

Schon seit längerem wollte ich nach Chur, die Universitätsstadt soll nette Gebäude haben mit einer schönen Altstadt. Da von Liechtenstein aus man nur knapp daran vorbei fährt habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt und habe mich ein wenig umgesehen. Ich war ein bißchen shoppen bin durch die wirklich schöne Altstadt. Es ist ein schöner Ort in dem man gerne mal ein paar Stunden verbringen kann.

In der Kirche - - - Inside a church

Auf dem Weg zurück nach Davos bin ich dann nochmal aus dem Zug ausgestiegen und zwar in Landquart, dort gibt es ein Designer Outet „Dörfchen“; ich hatte gehofft dort ein paar Snowboard-Klamotten günstig zu schießen, aber leider ohne Erfolg.

Nach Liechtenstein habe ich den Tag noch richtig genutzt und mehr von der Schweiz gesehen.

Chur (German: [ˈxuːr] or [khûr]; is the capital of the Swiss canton of Graubünden and lies in the northern part of the canton. Chur has a population of about 37,000. The city is reputedly the oldest town of Switzerland.

I had the wish to go to Chur for longer. The university town is supposed to has nice old buildings. Now it was a perfect timing as I will nearly pass this town on my way back from Liechtenstein. I walked around the beautiful old town of Chur and did a bit of shopping. You also have a nice view all over Chur. It is a nice place to spent a few hours.

Plessur Fluß - - - River Plessur

On my way back to Davos I got off the train in Landquart. There is a Designer Outlet Village. I was hoping to find some snowboard clothes but wasn´t lucky. I really made the best of the day to see more of Switzerland. It was a great trip.
