Ausflug nach Zürich

Zürich ist mit rund 400'000 Einwohnern die grösste Stadt der Schweiz. Ihre Einwohner werden Zürcher genannt (bzw. Stadtzürcher zur Differenzierung mit den übrigen Einwohnern des Kantons). Seit Jahren wird Zürich neben Genf als eine der Städte mit der weltweit höchsten Lebensqualität und gleichzeitig den höchsten Lebenshaltungskosten gelistet. Seit 2012 gilt Zürich als teuerste Stadt der Welt. Dank seiner Lage am Zürichsee, seiner gut erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Altstadt und einem vielseitigen Kulturangebot und Nachtleben ist es zudem ein Zentrum des Tourismus.

Wo ich schon in der Schweiz bin und nicht allzu weit weg von Zürich wollte ich unbedingt die Stadt besuchen. Ich habe mir ein paar Hostels rausgesucht, aber wollte erstmal sehen, ob ich am selbem Abend nicht noch zurückfahre. Die Zugfahrt dauert 2 Stunden und 15 Minuten mit einmal umsteigen. Zürich hat mir von vornerein gefallen. Die einzige andere größere Stadt in der Schweiz, die ich angeschaut habe, ist Genf. Zürich erinnerte mich aber eher an Innsbruck oder Salzburg in Österreich. Die Stadt hat eine nette Altstadt und ein tolles Museum und liegt direkt an einem Fluß und am Züricher See. Die schneebedeckten Berge sieht man am anderen Ende des Sees. Nach etwa 7 Stunden dachte ich mir, ´ich hab´ alles gesehen, was ich sehen wollte´; ich bin auch eine ganz Weile am See entlang spazieren gegangen, dann bin ich am Nachmittag wieder nach Davos zurück.

Zürich or Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. The municipality has approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Zürich is a leading global city and among the world's largest financial centres despite a relatively low population. The city is home to a large number of financial institutions and banking giants. Most of Switzerland's research and development centres are concentrated in Zürich and the low tax rates attract overseas companies to set up their headquarters there. According to several surveys from 2006 to 2008, Zürich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe.

I am already in Switzerland so I really wanted to see Zürich; it is not that far away. I checked out some hostels but didn´t booked anything because I might go back the same day. The journey by train took 2 hours and 15 minutes. I only had to change the train once. I liked the city right away. The only other bigger city I have visited in Switzerland is Geneva but Zürich reminded me more of Innsbruck or Salzburg in Austria. The city has a beautiful old town and it has at least one great museum. It is located along a river and the Lake Zurich. The snowcapped mountains you see at the end of the lake. After about 7 hours I thought I have done and seen everything I wanted to; I also walked quite a bit along the lake. So I took the train in the late afternoon and went back to Davos.

My new job

Die Schweiz (französisch Suisse, italienisch Svizzera, rätoromanisch Svizra oder lateinisch Helvetia), amtlich „Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft“ ist ein föderalistischer, demokratischer Staat in Europa. Die Schweiz grenzt an Deutschland im Norden, an Österreich und Liechtenstein im Osten, an Italien im Süden und an Frankreich im Westen. Die Bundesverfassung der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft legt keine Hauptstadt fest; der Sitz der Bundesbehörden ist die Bundesstadt Bern. Die Schweiz zählt 8,2 Millionen Einwohner, darunter 2,0 Millionen Ausländer (24 Prozent). Die sechs Grossstädte sind die Wirtschaftszentren Zürich, Genf, Basel, Lausanne, Bern und Winterthur. Das Land gliedert sich in 26 teilsouveräne Kantone und hat auf Bundesebene insgesamt vier offizielle Amtssprachen: Deutsch, Französisch, Italienisch und Rätoromanisch. Das Landeskennzeichen lautet «CH», die Abkürzung für das neutrale lateinische Confoederatio Helvetica, um keine der vier Amtssprachen zu bevorzugen. Der heutige Bundesstaat besteht seit 1848. Der Name Schweiz stammt vom Urkanton Schwyz. Der höchste Punkt in der Schweiz ist die mit 4'634 m ü. M. hohe Dufourspitze.

Die Landschaft Davos umfasst beinah das gesamte Landwassertal im Schweizer Kanton Graubünden. Davos besteht aus den sechs Fraktionsgemeinden Davos Dorf, Davos Platz, Davos Frauenkirch, Davos Glaris, Davos Monstein und Davos Wiesen. Die höchstgelegenste Stadt Europas (1.560 m) hat eine Einwohnerzahl von etwa 11.000. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich Davos zu einem bekannten Luftkurort und Wintersportgebiet. Vom Tal gesehen beherrschen die vorgelagerten Berge Seehorn (2'238 m), Büelenhorn (2'512 m), Jakobshorn (2'590 m) und Rinerhorn (2'528 m) das Bild. In Davos findet jährlich das Weltwirtschaftsforum statt.

Am 20. Dezember fuhr ich dann mit dem Zug nach Davos. Abends kam ich an und einige Teamer waren bereits da. Ich kannte bisher niemanden, zwei von Ihnen hatte ich aber kurz auf der Schulung getroffen. Ich mache nun zum dritten mal die Bar, diesmal im Hotel Real. Das Haus hat 23 Zimmer und faßt 40 Gäste. Wir sind insgesamt 10 Teamer, die alle sehr nett wirken. Das Haus ist alt, urig und verwinkelt. Die Bar befindet sich im Speisesaal und ist ganz ok ausgestattet. Hier läßt es sich arbeiten.

Davos is a municipality in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It has a permanent population of round about 11,000. Davos is located on the Landwasser River in the Swiss Alps. At 1,560 m (5,120 ft), it is the highest city in Europe. Davos is host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual meeting of global political and business elites and the home of one of Switzerland's biggest ski resorts. At the end of every year it serves as the site of the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, hosted by the HC Davos local hockey team. There are six main ski areas in winter, with a total of 320 km (200 miles) of slopes.

I took the train to Davos at 20 December. I arrived in the evening while a few of my work-mates were already there. I didn´t really know anybody; only two I met at the course in Austria. I work as a barkeeper for the fourth season with this company. The hotel “Real” has 23 rooms and sleeps 40 people. We are 10 workers which seem all very nice. The house is a bit old but nice, traditional with a lot of wood inside. The bar is located in the dining room and is quite alright to work with. I would say I have no problems to work here.

In 515 Tagen bin ich durch 5 Länder gereist. Eine grandiose Reise ist nun zu Ende. Ich habe viele tolle Leute getroffen, wunderschöne Orte gesehen, interessante Städte besucht, spaßige Jobs gehabt mit super Kollegen, viel Neues erfahren; meine Abenteuer sind aber noch lange nicht zuende. Ich will noch viel mehr erleben und bestaunen.

Nach so vielen unterschiedlichen Ländern kann ich trotzdem immer noch nicht sagen, wo es mir am besten gefallen hat. Jedes Land hat seine schönen Ecken und interessante Kulturen und Menschen.

Von Dublin in Irland bin ich direkt nach München geflogen. Ich hatte einen Termin für eine Schulung und habe zwei Nächte einen Stopover eingelegt und eine Freundin besucht; auch eine von denen, die ich auf einer meinen Reisen kennengelernt habe.

Nach München nahm ich den Zug nach Österreich und landete dann irgendwann in Saalbach-Hinterglemm im Salzburger Land zur Barkeeper-Schulung, hier war ich bereits zweimal. Ich werde wieder für meinen alten Arbeitgeber FROSCH Sportreisen arbeiten, wie bereits vor meinem Kanada-Trip als ich in Italien war. Nach drei Nächten ging es dann endlich wieder heim um Freunde und Familie wiederzusehen. Nur etwa 4 Wochen später startete mein neuer Job in Davos in der Ostschweiz im Kanton Graubbünden als Barkeeperin.

I travelled 515 days through 5 countries. An awesome journey has come to an end. I met great people; saw beautiful places, visit interesting cities, had fun jobs with superb co-workers. I learned lots of new stuff and my adventures are still not over. I wanna see and explore more.

So many various countries and still I cannot say which my favorite is. Every country has its beauty; interesting culture and friendly people.

From Dublin in Ireland I flew straight to Munich. I had an appointment for a course and a stopover to visit a friend was a great opportunity. She is one of my many travel mates I know from one of my trips.

After two nights in Munich I took the train towards Austria to Saalbach-Hinterglemm to join a bartender course for my new and old employer “FROSCH Sportreisen”. My last job was right before my Canada trip in Italy. After three nights it was time to go back home to family and friends. Only four weeks later I started working as a bartender in Switzerland in a town called Davos.

Back in Ireland

Wieder nach Irland

Ich hörte das die Region Conemarra ganz nett sein soll, daher bin ich von Derry in Nordirland dann an die Westküste durch den Nationalpark bis ich in dem kleinen Ort mit dem seltsamen Namen „Letterfrack“ ankam. Hier wurde mir von Couchsurfern von den interessanten „Old Monastery Hostel“ (€ 15) erzählt, welches mal früher ein Kloster war. Das Gebäude war ein Sammelsorium von Dingen aus aller Welt, in meinem Zimmer stand ein Beichtstuhl und die Duschen und Klos waren nur mit Kerzen und Lichterketten beleuchtet. Die gesamten Möbel waren zusammengewürfelt und der Besitzer war auch eine Nummer für sich. Er war sehr erstaunt, woher ich von dieser Unterkunft wußte, denn man findet es nicht über die üblichen Hostel-Suchmaschinen. Ich mag solche Orte. Später kam noch eine junge Orchestertruppe, die gefeiert haben. Ein tolles Frühstück war auch inklusive.

 

West coast

Weiter gen Süden habe ich in „Galway“ Halt gemacht wo ich mit Karen verabredet war, sie kommt aus Kanada, genauer gesagt aus Edmonton (wo ich viele Monate verbracht habe); was für ein Zufall. Wir haben uns über Couchsurfing verabredet, da sie auch nach Süden wollte. Wir waren uns gleich sympatisch. Wir fuhren dann gemeinsam zu den „Cliffs of Moher“, den bekanntesten Steilklippen Irlands. Sie ragen bis zu 214 m senkrecht in den Atlantik. Anschließend sind wir zum „Allie River Hostel“ (€ 20) in „Doolin“ was gleich um die Ecke der Klippen war. Auch dieses Hostel wurde mir empfohlen, bereits von einem Couchsurfing Pärchen, bei denen ich in Kanada war. Wir sind dann mit unserem Zimmernachbar in einen echt Irischen Pub gegangen, ich war schon in irischen Pub überall auf der Welt, aber dies war mein erstes in Irland; wurde ja auch mal Zeit. So hatte ich es mir vorgestellt, es war voll mit Einheimischen und jeder der wollte hat mal ein Instrument gespielt oder gesungen.

Am folgenden Tag sind wir gemeinsam auch mit unserem Zimmergenossen weiter, den er mußte nur in die nächst größere Stadt und da hab ich ihn einfach mitgenommen. Mit Karen bin ich dann auf die „Dingle Halbinsel“. Es hieß wenn ich nur Zeit für eine der mehreren Halbinseln im Südwesten habe, dann die. Wir haben die Halbinsel umrundet und sind dann zu meinen ausgesuchten Hostel nach „Cloghane“ ins „Brandon Mountain Hostel“ (€ 20). Auch wieder ein nettes Hostel mit kaum Gästen. Karen hatte noch mehr Zeit als ich, daher habe ich sie im Hauptort „Dingle“ auf der Halbinsel im Hostel abgesetzt.

Ich bin dann weiter in Richtung Cork, dort bin ich nur kurz durch den Ort und dann nach Midelton in das nette „An Stor Tourist Hostel“ (€ 18) und dann am nächsten Tag nach Kilkenny, um mir das Schloß anzusehen. Die nächsten zwei Nächte habe ich bei einem Pärchen in „Blackwater“ übernachtet, die ich 2006 in Australien kennengelernt habe, sie ist Deutsche, er Ire. Wir haben dort zusammen in einer WG gewohnt; damals waren sie aber noch kein Pärchen. Es war wieder interessant Leute zu treffen, die man vor Jahren mal kennengelernt hat. Wir waren nett essen, haben deutsches Fernsehen geguckt und sind ein wenig in der nächst größeren Stadt „Wexford“, welchs an der Ostküste liegt spazieren gegangen. Am Nachmittag ging dann mein Flug von Dublin nach München.

Auch Ireland hat mir super gefallen. Es ist ein wunderschönes Land mit liebenswerten Menschen.

The region „Conemarra“ is meant to be very beautiful. From Derry in Northern Ireland I drove pretty much straight to the west coast through the National Park until I reached a small place with the funny name “Letterfrack”. I was told from couchsurfers there is a let´s say very interesting hostel; and there is. The “Old Monastery Hostel” (€ 15) really used to be a monastery. The hostel is a mish-mash of odd things collected from all over the world. There was a confessional box in my room and bathrooms were only illuminated with fairy lights and candles. The furniture was random and the owner was a character for himself. He was surprised how I found out about his place as it is not listed in the several hostel booking sites. I like those kinds of places. Later this evening a young orchestra group arrived and did a bit of partying. A great breakfast was included.

Dingle Peninsula

 When I went further south I stopped in “Galway” to pick up Karen. She is from Edmonton, Canada where I stayed for several months; what a coincident. We connected through couchsurfing. We came along immediately. We drove together to the “Cliffs of Moher“ the famous cliffs reach a height up to 214 m (390 ft). Afterwards we stayed at the „Allie River Hostel“ (€ 20)in the nearby town “Doolin”. I was told about this great hostel when I did couchsurfing back in Canada. We went together with our roommate to an Irish Pub. I have been to several Irish Pubs all around the world but this is my first one in Ireland; really it was about time. This is how I imagined it. Random locals just started to sing and play instruments. It was a terrific atmosphere.

The next day we took off and I also took our roommate as he had to go to the next big town. Karens and my next destination was the “Dingle Peninsula”. If you ask people and you tell them you have only time for one of the several peninsulas in this area “Dingle” is the one. We surrounded pretty much the peninsula and drove to a hostel which I selected. In “Cloghane” we stayed at the “Brandon Mountain Hostel“ (€ 20). It was a very nice one with hardly any guests. Karen had more time than me so I dropped her off in the town of Dingle.

I drove towards Cork but I just didn´t stay long there. I slept in the „An Stor Tourist Hostel“ (€ 18) in nearby “Midelton”. The next day I went to “Kilkenny” to check out the castle. The next two nights I stayed in “Blackwater” with a German/Scottish couple I met 2006 in Australia but they were not a couple back then. We used to live in a share house with several others. It is very interesting to meet people again after such a long time. We went out for dinner; relaxed and watched German television which was great. We also went to the next bigger town “Wexford” located at the east coast. At the afternoon I took my flight from Dublin back to Germany to Munich.

I really enjoyed Ireland as well. It is a beautiful country with lovely people.
